Curt came up with this crazy idea over 5 years ago and now, 3 years in the making, is finally ready for your enjoyment. He first started by seeking out the finest local honey and maple syrup and aged it in freshly emptied bourbon barrels for over a year. Then he brewed the biggest beer we've ever made, a robust imperial stout with house applewood and hickory smoked Munich malt, and aged it in the barrels that previously held bourbon, maple syrup and honey. The result is a truly complex work of liquid art designed to be savored.

Bottled on 2/16/2016 (bottle #315); consumed on 1/1/2024

Pours a dense, motor-oil black body capped with a finger of creamy, pale mocha foam; decent head retention yields a few spotty, paper-thin islands atop a near-blank void, while an immense, fluffy collar surrounds and a limited spread of chunky lacing clings tentatively to the walls of the glass.

Aromas of dry hickory ease to baked apple crisp as tinges of malted milk cocoa build; a backing of prunes and black raspberry compote progress while smoky toffee and hints of burnt sugar settle on the closing impressions of the bouquet.

Taste offers charry maple upfront as rich milk chocolate builds against tones of soft prune, leaving smoked applewood and an ample char coursing over the mid-palate; dark chocolate meets distant tinges of black raspberry soft serve on the back end into oaky roast and burnt sugar lingering past the swallow.

Mouthfeel shows a medium-full body and lower-end carbonation, levying a creamy heft into silky residuals as a delicately tannic twang settles over the mid-palate and a pseudo-roast glides through the back end.

An immersive experience anchored in nearly unparalleled barrel and malt synchronicity, unyielding in complexity and blended with the ultimate finesse; a stout as impressive as it is ambitious.

A: Ethanol heat hovers discreetly, which fastens the tears in lengthened occurrences, aside the turbulences. There is a low-grade sense on foam adherence, given the rim with severed gap disruptions. Nonetheless, a proper fitting to guide age, as the neckline starts in centimeters, before heeding that disengaged margin. Underneath, a body that’s toned to an eerie jet wash amid a dark jungle green highlight, while the incipient top shades a khaki to burnt umber dye

S: A dated learnedness that presents the barrels with a perceptiveness on malt mechanics, while hops provide an afar solidity. There is a hindquarter of cinnamon that propagates post onset, where °F gets incrementally altered. Even so, the notations lean on molasses, which coat fruit, aside from the anterior delivery on chocolate above pruned leather. The movement drives a vanilla stave presence with a dark forest perception, inasmuch as a maple leaf guise, before smoldering – light – mesquite. In addition, acres upon aces for elevating raisin agronomists in beating sun, while addressing phenolic aldehydes besides a port – drupe – sorghum. Subsequently, a woodsy hop rider to plank against dehydrated chocolate. The timed vintage is keen on dryness thru a bittering component, where hops aid tannin assemblies with some unsociable (waning) esters

T: The opening barrel presence discourses malt with a timbered sheath. The workings are therefore woodsy in their proceedings over prune Truffles, while hinting at maple afore neighboring Cajeta. There is a lactone gravity (of oak) against a lignin for vanillin, which stretch the chords to an outer rhytidome. Moreover, a cask correspondence to malt, which pitches bourbon on cherry cordials, as tarry spices linger on forestry trudges. That cherry connotation is continually tuned, for a tannin supplement on skins, while hops offer a slick – atmospheric – cut. Coupled with, an unconventional means on cinnamon, from an ester-y cue on benzyl, which readdress the cask note on almonds. The roasted malt has succumbed an oldness that’s untainted, and welcomes a sensitivity to shelved Madeira, permitting a burnt sugar intellect atop a liquored arid nuttiness. The barrel is brandished to the age, and justly on point, considering the unending avenues beyond clocked time

M: Surfaces smoothly around a creamy front that gets notched, for balance, by a sharp tailpiece. The added years’ work to benefit attenuation, by deterring thickness within a subtle aridness. Moreover, a controlled awareness on heat, which is complimentary warming to the roast-derived advances. To that end, an effective output that texturizes proficiently, pinning the semi-luscious start against age. Keeping in mind the trained (elderly) hop effect that works to the uncapped progression, which manipulates a learned – dry – acerbity thru oak tannin clauses

O: A vintage that’s more justifiable to the buildups than the fresher/youthful counterpart. One that’s particularly cognizant, of the smoked Munich malts (Applewood/Hickory), while parading barrel totality. Intrinsically, a rhythmical – rich – “work of liquid art” that pins the hop abetments to the robust grains, while furthering the deep cask endeavors. Naturally, the cellar needs to be properly handled, for benefiting the stretched periods

A very hyped beer. Nonetheless I tried to drink this beer with an open mind. Dark liquid viscosity. Nice Brown tan head. Boozy on the nose. You have to allow this beer to warm up to bring out the honey and maple notes. Sweet on the initial taste, boozy warm finish. This beer can be overpowering and strong but it smooths out as it warms up.

Bottle tasted on 5/16/17 side by side with some big guns: SR71, KBBS, FVM 16, Assassin 14. Good beer that was smooth, sweet and good barrel favor. The smoke had subsided and against the others one felt a little thin and overwhelming. Maybe it faded, maybe it wasn't a great bottle. It was a good beer, and wood drink again in a heart beat, but was expecting world class.
