This batch of Big Black was split and aged in two carefully selected varieties of bourbon barrels hand picked for the chocolate, vanilla and coconut flavors they impart with extended aging, along with Madagascar vanilla beans and Ghanaian cocoa nibs. Once removed from the barrel, fresh Michigan tart cherries were added resulting in a well balanced stout with notes of vanilla, chocolate, cherry, oak and bourbon.

The last of many, many thanks to my friend fiver29 , which whom I engaged in an epic back & forth over the span of years. 22 oz. bottle with rebar-reinforced red wax dated 2/22/16, bottle #483. Half the contents hand-delivered to my wife, watching bad TV upstairs. Me in man-cave!

After finally conquering Tyrannosaurus Wax, the beer emerges just as black as expected, little or no visible carbonation. Bits of roast & aimless fruitiness wander through the aroma, even lighter chocolate before the barrel arrives, deep & lovely.

Chocolate Covered Cherry Big Black Voodoo Daddy Aged in Bourbon Barrels is a physical, spiritual, & grammatical mouthful. Alcohol wields the staff up front – big bite of bourbon & booze, even after 18+ months, gnashes over the palate within milliseconds of the first sip being consumed. After the wooze comes strong chocolate, desiccated cherries, roast, wood, with a finishing kick of bitterness that doesn’t feel hoppy, but feels like licking someone who was just dumped. Thick. Despite the booze, easy to sip. I hear frogs.

The bombastic bourbon works with the fruit – which isn’t a common occurrence in my body. Big, bruising, a worthy descendant of the original BBVD. Excellent beer.

On tap. Murky dark brown color, no head. Aroma has some vague fruity notes like melon with chocolate, quite "fresh" smelling. Taste has dark chocolate, generic fruitiness, a bit tart and astringent, dry on the finish. Body is on the lighter side, medium carbonation.

Bottle #166 - This was somewhat surprisingly delicious. The cherry was flavors were muted, with the chocolate being the star. Overall, tasted exactly what the name indicates, a chocolate covered cherry. Yum.

Thanks to bellsfounder for sending this one! Reviewed from notes. Bottle #723, dated 2-22-16. Poured from the red wax-sealed 22 oz. bottle into an El Catador Barrel Aged glass.

A: Pours a very, very dark brown and essentially opaque. Minimal if any visible carbonation and a very thin tan head that really doesn’t last.

S: A huge punch of bourbon and chocolate up front. Then vanilla, drying tobacco, and oak. Roasted malts and more cacao nibs. I'm not getting much cherry, but otherwise the aroma is nice. While still fairly cold, there are mild fusel ethanol notes. NOTE: These do persist, even when nearer to room temperature.

T: Chocolate and cacao nibs, bourbon and vanilla. Big roasted malts, some ethanol sweetness, barrel char and dark roasty bitterness. Tobacco and tannin dryness. It finishes with bourbon flavors and sweet malts, but stays away from cloying.

M: Full-bodied but thinner than I'd like - and yet it still tastes like some residual sugars or incomplete attenuation. The alcohol is obvious but not overly hot for style; though it still achieves pretty big bourbon flavors. Low carbonation sensation but acceptable for style.

O: I feel like I’m missing something here. It’s okay, but there’s no cherry. It falls just a bit short in the aroma and taste and mouthfeel, and it really doesn’t stand out particularly in a crowded sea of BBA stouts. The chocolate flavors are nice, with a good balance of sweet and bitter cacao. I’m disappointed I got one of the "no cherry" bottles. Really not a bad beer, but not at all what I was hoping for.
