Our third iteration of this beer, this special batch of Belgian tripel has been tucked away in the back of the barrel room for nearly 3 years. During its 33 month repose, this beer has gained massive apple brandy and oak overtones, truly blurring the lines of beer and spirit.

Barrel Room IV release
?$
Copper in color and a bit cloudy with minor head that settles to nothing. No legs on a sip.
Nose is straight apple juice mixed with rubbing alcohol and oak.
Taste is apple, oak, and alcohol notes from start to finish.
Mouthful is medium to light and a bit cloying. Carbonation is high. Finish is semi dry.
Knowing what I was getting into here, I gave this beer an extra year to age. I was hoping that alcohol element lessened a bit - maybe, maybe not.
That in mind, I like apple brandy and I like tripels. Unfortunately this represents neither. I hate to throw Voodoo under the bus here because they produce some stellar beers but this beer represents the lesser characteristics of each element. The beer is completely unbalanced. Barrel, Apple, alcohol all standalone.
Can't recommend this.

First actually undrinkable beer I've had in a few years.
Looks... confused. Kinda belgian golden look. But coulda passed as Michelob Amberbock.
Smells like acetone and antifreeze, with a touch of toffee and Bicardi 151.
Tastes pretty much like it smells. Boozy. GURD-inducing. College chem lab amber vial death applejuice.
Feels boozy. Surprisingly thin. Not much bubble to it.
Demonseed. Down the drain it went.

Bomber poured into a snifter appears as though it is apple juice but with a white cap that is quick to fade.
This smells like cider with green apples and a pretty intense booziness mixing with acetone that to me really flirts with the feeling of being in a nail salon.
The taste is apple cider with a firm woody earthiness and almost a weird minty-like booziness.
This is medium in body with a modest amount of carbonation. It is pretty intense and honestly despite my love of all things Voodoo, im not a fan of this one. In the prior releases of this (closer to 1 and 2 years in the barrel) I noticed a bit of variation between some bottles being all pleasant boozy apple brandy character and some others that were honestly...hard to swallow.

Had this at a tasting along with several other Voodoo barrel-aged offerings. I have enjoyed many of Voodoo's BA beers, but this was truly awful. It tasted like acetone and didn't smell much better. I think this spent way too long in the barrels and the base tripel was too mild-tasting to survive that barrel-aging.

Voodoo makes some really amazing beers. This one didn't make that list for me. The apple brandy was really overwhelming. It rang as a net positive on the smell, but went in the other direction on the taste. The apple brandy takes this beer so far away from a tripel that Ty Cobb would have trouble recognizing it. If you're a hardcore apple brandy or very booze-forward beer fan, then you might really dig this; otherwise you might find yourself looking around the room for that person like I did.

Best version yet, though seemingly has lost almost all characteristics of a beer. 33 months is a long time.
