Black Magick - Buffalo Trace Batch #2Black Magick - Buffalo Trace Batch #2
Notes: Blue Wax - We couldn’t turn down some super fresh barrels, even if we had already done this barrel treatment before. This time around though, Curt decided to age this second batch of Buffalo Trace Black Magick six months longer than the first batch released back in 2013 to explore the depth of character that could be amassed. This second batch spent 24 months aging gracefully in American oak bourbon barrels resulting in complex layers of coconut, leather, baker’s chocolate, wood and bourbon.

A few pours at wakefest and this was thoroughly enjoyed. Having had the 4 Roses version on tap a day before, I would say I preferred that, but they are both amazing stouts. Thick and fudgy. Amazing barrel flavors. Very little roast and dryness. Full bodied. You can't go wrong with Voodoo BA stouts.

This one pours a very dark black, with a small head and no lacing.

This smells like spicy oak, vanilla, tobacco, leather, bourbon, and Mexican chocolate.

The taste is similar. It's quite spicy, in a woody sort of way. There's tobacco, cedar, leather, and dark spicy chocolate, with vanilla and coconut from the barrel. The booze doesn't really show through at all.

This is surprisingly thick and chewy, with a lower level of carbonation.

Voodoo can do no wrong. This is unreal.

Bottle #782 poured into chalice.

Pitch black liquid that only had a caramel colored foam form around the edge of glass upon pour. Oak. Nutty. Rich chocolate. Barrel. Plenty and abundant on both the nose and in the taste. Thick mouthfeel and much smoother than you would expect. Very slight heat as it warmed.

This is one of the best BA stouts I've ever had. The depth of flavor and character is incredible, and I wish I could have access to these more easily. With all that said, the high asking price was totally worth it.

Thanks to JLindros for sharing this bottle.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice dark black hue with a thin mocha head that fades to leave thin wisps.

S - Aromas of dark fruits, raisins, chocolate, oaky barrels, nice light vanilla, excellent bourbon notes.

T - Taste is similar to the nose, excellent chocolate notes. The oak barrels were great, nice vanilla. The bourbon is absolutely dominant

M - Mouthfeel is nicely carbonated, creamy, alcohol is hidden very nicely. Excellent.

O - Overall this was a very good stout with phenomenal barrel and bourbon notes.

Thanks to drew
Light fizzy head fades quickly, pitch black beer big legs

Nose typical huge imperial stout, kahlua, coffee stout roasted malt, cocoa, fudge, vanilla ice cream barrel, dark chocolate chunks, little almost brandy like fruity raisin, a fair bourbon,

Taste big bourbon, tons of big stout, loads of dark chocolate cocoa etc, little roast and bitter char, little fudge, bit of spicy hop, vanilla ice cream barrel, little candy note, nice barrel, little earthy hop

Mouth is heavier bod, some tingly booze, big thick fudge and decent but a touch light on the carb.

Overall very nice, very big beer, good base, good barrel.

On tap. Pitch black color, no head. Aroma has whiskey, really dark chocolate and some spices. Taste has whiskey, woody notes, toasted malt, light smoke and toffee on the finish. Medium body and carbonation.

100% fudge shop nose with some Maman-like character. The bouquet elicits a mouth-watering sensation. Nearly perfect nose for my tastes. There are some similarities between the blue wax and the green wax, but I think the blue has a better smell. This beer is barrel-driven. If you love barrel character in your brews, this is the pinnacle. Very dense front, leather and smoke. Love it.

Bottle 264 from the 2/1/17 batch poured into a matching barrel room collection snifter. Its black in color with a dark brown head that holds faintly around the edge of the glass.

Aroma is boozy with chocolate, vanilla, caramel, oak and roasty earth.

Taste is roasty like espresso, earth, bitter chocolate, vanilla, caramel and oak. Lingering alcohol is mildly solvent but blends with the other flavors very nicely.

Medium to fuller in body with modest carbonation. This is awesome, as every iteration of black magick always is.

Exceptional beer. Feels thick and oily without being syrup. Wood, bourbon, chocolate, and vanilla. Chocolate hits twice up front and after. Smells hotter than it tastes. Masked better on the tongue, but still smells very complex with different "layers" going on. Looks thick and dark. Wish there was a hair more carb for some ringed head, but not surprised after 24months in a barrel. Well done.

L: Pours a thick onyx, jet black, and mocha hue with a thin sandy head
S: Dark chocolate, cacao nibs, fudge, and a bit of barrel on the nose
T: Incredible - admittedly a bit boozy, but 2 years in bourbon barrels will do that. The flavor range is insane on this for being a straightforward BA stout. I got oak, vanilla, toffee, and brownie batter in each sip
F: Medium to full-bodied with a nice supporting carb
O: This beer drew comparisons to SR-71 for me. Without the aid of obvious adjuncts, Voodoo has created an decadent stout that fully showcases its lengthy slumber in bourbon barrels. Absolutely delicious.

8oz pour from this last release. Doesn't disappoint, just as good as batch 1. Pours jet black, minimal head. Lots of bourbon, oak and chocolate fudge on both nose and taste. Smoother than batch 1 fresh. Extra time in barrel seem to bode well. Maybe a touch thinner than before.

8 oz pour into a snifter. Pours black with very little head. Nose is full of fudge and wood. Taste is similar with hints of vanilla and leather in the back end. The barrel flavor dominates but is very smooth in comparison to the old forester version. Of the 3 varieties Ive had this was my favorite.

L: pours pitch black, thick and no head.
S: huge aroma, smelled it as soon as I opened the cap....awesome rich bourbon and fudge
T: just like the nose, huge rich bourbon and fudge.
F: thick, coating and smooth. A bit too much carbonation but I can swirl it out.
O: Best in class for non adjunct ba stouts
