Notes / Commercial Description:
This is an Imperial Stout that is of great strength and complexity. We then gently age that beer in Elaigh Craig 13 1/2 year old Bourbon Barrels for 6 months to 1 yr. and then primed and bottled to bottle condition for continued aging and celler life. Black Magick should be able to be aged up to about 5 years, to heighten the complexity and smooth nature of this beer.

First Black Magick brewed in Feb 2007. Released 2009. = 15% ABV

Second Black Magick brewed in 2009 and released 2011. = 15.5% ABV

Presentation: 12 oz. bottle poured into my Cigar City tulip. Served at cellar temperature and drank over the course of about an hour. Huge thanks to Centennial for giving this to me. 2011 vintage.

Appearance: Midnight black in color and very thick. Some foam gushed toward the top of the bottle while opening. Pours a nice, one finer, thin brown head but with recedes quickly. The head retention was very good considering the ABV.

Aroma: First scent is some pretty big booze. After a while though, it dies down. Chocolate, dark fruits, brown sugar, vanilla, whiskey and caramel are all there and pretty nicely balanced. This is pretty barrel forward. The sweeter notes definitely get more noticable the longer this sits.

Taste: Unlike the aroma, this is very mellow condiering the ABV. Big chocolate and coffee notes are front and center, with some nice bourbon being upfront as well. There is a lot more sweetness in the background. Molasses, brown sugar, milk chocolate, and dark fruit notes are all contributing. Not overly sweet at all. I am really surprised at how well the flavors are meshed at this point and how the alcohol really doesn't make anything harsh. Very warming as well.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, full bodied and very creamy. The carbonation is spot on and this really is incredibly easy to sip on.

Overall, a really great bourbon barrel stout that definitely lives up to the hype. Incredibly smooth for how young it is and really pleasant to drink. I am definitely glad I have another bottle. Highly recommended.

2011 bottle. Thanks Mikesgroove!

Appearance. Pours thick and black with a very thin orangy brown head that rises up after the pour and fades quickly to a faint ring.

Smell. Wow, much bourbon, so beer! Anyways, ya lots of bourbon, licorice and some dark chocolate, a bit of wood and vanilla.

Taste. Good amount of bourbon again, black licorice, some bakers chocolate in the finish followed by a little bit of bitter oak.

Mouthfeel. Full body, actually quite thick and a little bit sticky on the lips. Very low and smooth carbonation.

Overall. Not the best tasting beer but an enjoyable bourbon bomb. If I was a big bourbon fan this would probably kick more ass.

Deep dark black pour with virtually no head, almost looks still in the glass. Syrupy entrails cling to the side of the top of the glass. Aromas of bold dark malts that are somewhat roasted with lots of dark fruits and a backbone that's boozy and has some soy sauce accents as well. Slightly smoky to boot. A bit odd.

First sip brings a blast of big roasted malts upfront. Somewhat sweet and syrupy with lots of fruit flavors along with a dose of smokiness. Boozy accents hit midway down and bring in some big, slightly overbearing alcohol heat. Overly extreme in my opinion.

Mouthfeel is thick and again slightly syrupy. A bit too much residual sweetness and alcohol here. I think this one could have been better if the abv was ratcheted down a few notches. Thanks to autumnaldave for sharing the 12oz bottle, as 6oz of this was more than enough - not a big fan of this one now but maybe some age on it would help.

Pours dense pitch black with a short lived fudgey dark brown head. The bourbon flavor is very robust and quite nice. There's plenty of oaky vanilla for everybody. The stout seems more chocolaty than anything, but this it very much a bourbon delivery device. Big oily palate with a long hot finish. This is a pretty enjoyable beer, but not a world beater.

Glad to get my hands on some of this beer. A big fan of BBVD, so this was a must try.
Pours a oily, jet black with a thin layer of light brown head. Lacing is thin and spotty...not surprising for the style.
Aroma is wonderful with a boat load of bourbon and vanilla. Lot of dark chocolate too. The alcohol is noticeable too, but at 15.5% abv, I'm not too concerned.
Taste is fantastic. A real standout in the handful of barrel aged imperial stouts I have had the pleasure of sampling lately. Bourbon? Check...also, a big presence of bitter dark chocolate up front. Less vanilla in the flavor versus the nose and the heat is there too, but as much as it is detected, the mouthfeel is velvet and I find myself wanting another 12oz. after this. I won't do it knowing the abv, but for the high octane, I still find the drinkability decent for the punch this one packs. So glad to find this local gem, as it is everything I could have hoped for and more.

12 oz bottle 2009 release

Pours out completely opaque black, pours out like the darkest spent motor oil. Nice legs and lacing, retains a dark mocha colored ring, smooth creamy head.

Bourbon soaked wood, still boozey after all this time, in a good way, vanilla,

Sweet, dark burnt sugars, vanilla marshmallow, smooth smooth bourbon, old bourbon soaked wood, really get the barrel.

Thick but not overly so.

Amazing beer, amazing at this age, just right.

Pours out a completely expected black with a very thin dark brown head. Aroma was bourbon heat, at this point, I was not expecting greatness, you have a substantial boozy heat coming through in the nose.

But then it was love at first sip, the booze was really diminished on the palate, allowed the bourbon to come across in a behind the scenes way, wasn't hot at all, made me think of all the iipa's at 7.5% that seemed to have more heat to them. Lots of toffee. Fair amount of chocolate. Great mouthfeel, doesn't get tired, and is far from a chore to finish, unlike many other beers in this neighborhood of 15%.

Thanks to whoever it was that threw this in as an extra, and then koufax21 for throwing me another. Drank this after the bama/lsu game and during ufc 138.

My label states 15.5%, this is one beautiful looking beer, it's absolutely pitch black no visible light makes it through the body...everything fades to black. Head is smooth and creamy light tan color with fine layers of lacing forming as it settles.

Aroma is full of lively whiskey barrel aging effects, vanilla, charred oak big aggressive barrel aging on the nose with a background imperial grandpa stout brewing up with dark chocolate/coffee/hints of soy sauce pretty impressive that something this complex can come out of Meadville, PA. I love the ville de Mead, I attended Allegheny College as a freshmen and this beer is like a 360 from the beer scene I experienced that year.

Flavor is full of whiskey barrel aging effects, well the booze seems to dominate a bit my nares are widened and senses alert with the first sip, warmth runs down my chest and throughout my palate. Funny that I bought a single bottle of this for 17 dollars and a full case of KBS for 100 bucks tonight after having dinner at Primanti Brother's in Crafton, PA. As it warms dark chocolate, whiskey dessert creaminess comes alive with dark fruits in the background, an amazing drinking experience no doubt. Warm belly, happy heart I consume this special beer being proud to personally know Matt Allyn...not just as a beergeek but a person who loves beer and and works his ass off while raising a family.

That's the real side to Matt that comes through, he's a family man working for Straub, Erie, 3 Sons, Voodoo, Sprague, Blue Canoe...Matt is simply a true gypsy brewer for a region who does what it takes to keep the beer flowing.

Mouthfeel is hot, but not offensively so, I love the way the dark roasts and creamy chocolate meld with the hints of whiskey barrel aging like vanilla and charred oak with high 31 proof beer sits comfortably on a beer drinker's palate on a cool mid March evening.

Overall impression is excellent one of those beers that I have had but never threw down my thoughts in ink, I'm glad I've made a permanent statement about how excellent these brews are. By the way, I've recently seen Voodoo Pilzilla in 12 ounce bottles quite simply the perfect format for such an unrelentingly hoppy pilsner. I love Voodoo, they need to send some Cowbell down here on Nitro it will move without difficulty.

12oz. blank, no label, brown bottle, poured into a snifter.

A: Completely pitch black... one of the darkest beers I've seen. Maybe a 1/2 inch of deep, dark espresso colored head. No lacing but lots of oils and resinous hop juice and malt sludge.

S: Big time bourbon. Huge. Very sweet and potent vanilla and oak. Very woody. Stings the nostrils.

T/M: Massive. Simply massive. Bourbon is massive. Vanilla and woody oak is also massive with just a touch of syrupy cherry juice in the back. Very oaty feel in the mouth with a touch of very bitter chocolate. Some resinous hops. Everything is... massive... but it's too much. It's all borderline too much but hits the brakes just in time. Body is very full but the light carbonation keeps is pretty smooth.

D: Very slow sipper. Too massive to be very drinkable at all. No complaints, though.

Black with 1cm khaki head. Low retention and spotty lacing. 

Roasted character in the nose with some chocolate. Bourbon is present but not Alot. A little oaky. 

Flavor is phenomenal and extremely well balanced. Deep, robust and not overly rich. Nice chocolate notes. Mild bourbon and vanilla. 

Mouth is just under full bodied. Silky with light creamy carbonation. 

Overall this beer is excellent! You'd never know it's 15% abv. I want more!

Voodoo horizontal. A well balanced beer, emphasizing the bitterness of the hops and roasted malt. Chocolate and coffee in the secondary. Smooth, thick mouthfeel. Bourbon, chocolate, roast in the nose. Very dark brown with little head. Rich experience, aging has given it some notes of cognac.

Thanks to ipa247 (Jeff) for this one. Unlabeled 12oz. bottle poured into a Darkness snifter. Shared with schen9303.

A: Standard pour yields no head... so I extend it... and still nothing. Beer is thicker than motor oil and darker too. Lacing is spotty and and sparse with moderate cling. Nice legs though. Not the best looking but damn... may be the thickest imperial stout I've seen to date.

S: Nose is outrageously aromatic and strong. Booze hits full force right at the beginning. Notes of vanilla, roasted malt, liquorice, brownie mix, creamy hops, and chocolate linger in the background. Make no mistake about it... this is very one-sided... and not a good side either.

T: Opens very roasty and boozy. Ethanol and roasted dark fruit bitterness create an awkward combination at the start. Liquorice and stale sweet soy sauce towards the middle. Abrasive chocolate, bitter cocoa powder, creamy hops, and liquorice at the end. Finish is more roasted dark fruit and cocoa powder. Aftertaste is bitter cocoa powder and some bittersweet chocolate. Too much booze and not enough complexity. The flavor that is present is awkward. Not impressed at all.

M: Medium bodied and moderately carbonated. Oily and thick in the mouth but bubbly and prickly going down. Finish is messy with a lingering aftertaste. Rather standard but the body is light for how it looks and at 15.5% ABV, this actually tastes STRONGER than it actually is... which is a feat in itself.

O: This beer is sought after?!? I don't understand it in the least or else I'm entirely missing something here but this is not a good beer. Too much booze, not enough flavor, and every other aspect is barely average. Pass... its not nearly worth the effort.

Black Magick lives up to its name. It's onyx. Pitch black. No light's cutting through at all. Ominous and impressive. A thin layer of head just covers the surface. It's dark mocha colored and recedes very quickly. At 15.5% abv, it was born to die...quick.

The nose is alright, but doesn't blow me away. It has a strong, bittersweet dark chocolate scent initially. It's followed by a rather strong bourbon scent. It's a little much for my preference. I understand this was barrel aged for somewhere between 6 months and 1 year. Perhaps that was a little too long. Roasted coffee is noted. There are also light dark fruit and black currant scents. Smells slightly charred. Alcohol is easily noted, but it is 15.5% abv. Is that a surprise?

The flavor's pretty good. I'm debating the flavor score. It's definitely full of bittersweet, dark chocolate. The malt base is nice and rather sturdy. Roasted coffee blends well and adds subtle depth. Bourbon is strong in the mix. A little too strong for my preference. I prefer a more subtle, moderate approach. It has a light, tangy dark fruit flavor. Black currants, light molasses, and a charred flavor round it out. Alcohol is rather strong and warm. Boozy? Yeah, a little. But, I don't think it's overly hot. Go figure. Honestly, I think the flavor's just above average. It's too boozy and the strong bourbon flavor overpowers some of the other stout flavors.

Black Magick also has a medium body. It feels too thin. The label says this was brewed with 15 different malts. I'm surprised it doesn't have a fuller body. It needs it. Drinkability is average at best. The flavor's alright, but it's boozy and grows tiresome rather quick. It's also damn strong at 15.5%. Yeah, you read that right.

I'm honestly a little disappointed in Black Magick. It's alright, but could be dramatically better. The biggest problems are the overly strong booziness and the insufficient body. This would be much better if it were aged in barrels for 3 months and came in at about 10% abv. Add a little more heft and it'd probably be a real winner. As it is...just a little too extreme. Glad I got to try it out nonetheless. Thanks a ton, Josh.

A: Thick and aggressive black with trace amounts of carbonation and decent lacing

S: Big sweet vanilla aroma upfront with traces of roastiness chocolate wood and bourbon. It is definitely on the sweeter end

T: aggressive bourbon to start followed by sweet vanilla and hints of wood. This reminded me alot of older visc except it had carbonation. Not as complex though as some other BA stouts

M: Good amount of creaminess, no heat except for the bourbon which adds to the appeal.

D: I split the bottle with someonoe else but felt that at the end of it I could have gone for a little bit more

Pours black and thick with a minimal head on the beer.

Aroma is soy sauce, roast, bourbon, and booze. Intense.

Flavor is also very intense and soy saucey. Roasty with anise, charcoal, and alcohol. A little too reminiscent of Sam Adams Triple Bock.

Really full-bodied with extremely low carbonation and a slick palate.

Really undrinkable in large amounts, even a ticker's 2oz pour.

12 oz. bottle to a snifter. 2011 bottle. Reviewed from notes.

Appearance - No head. Black, but not inky. Sticky and leggy. Looks like loads of sugar in this guy.

Smell - Chocolate malts. Smokey and oaky, but not a ton of bourbon.

Taste - Molasses and chocolate. Bourbon notes, but not a lot of barrel to it. Oaky in the finish. Becomes dry and astringent.

Mouthfeel - Not boozy at all, which is amazing. Low carbonation. Oaky, dry, and tannic.

Overall - Had this after a BCBS 08, which meant this was always going to lose. Nowhere near as refined in flavor, but also nowhere near as boozy. I'd love more barrel in this, but the base stout is loaded with molasses.

This has finally been making the rounds to some of the bottle shops in PA over the last week or so. I figured that it's time to check out the meat & potatoes of this guy. Thanks to HopDerek for picking this up for me at Capone's in Norristown, PA. $10 per.

12 oz unlabeled and unmarked bottle. Served at 45 degrees F and then allowed to warm up some at room temp. It goes into an oversized Dogfish Head snifter to allow this beast some breathing room.

An aggressive pour into the glass yields a blackness that is as dark as an oil slick with a smallish ¼ finger covering of burnt, reddish looking, dark tan head. This fizzles down pretty darn quickly into a retention that bunches up thinly around the edges with some smallish wisps that float in the center. This leaves a huge creamy cascade of foam down the sides of the glass that sticks around via some oily brown residue and good spotty lacing. The aroma is OMFG! notes of Bourbon, including some vanilla sweetness (that seems to stick in the nose) and a woody oak character. I mean, the Bourbon is so strong at first, that I can literally smell it a good 3 feet away from the glass! The sharpness of the Bourbon smoothes out as it warms; allowing the underlying Imperial Stout qualities to comes out and play. Notes of dark chocolate, caramel, roasted malts, with a touch of coffee and dark fruits. It's hard to go super deep on this because of the Bourbon smell but I'm also picking up some additional dankness of soy sauce and wet tobacco that seem to feature more predominantly as it warms. Of course, there is also a big ole' waft of heat (that combines with the Bourbon) to singe your nose hairs a bit and remind you that your dealing with a beer that has some serious ABV going on with it.

Much like the aroma, the taste profile starts out with strong Bourbon character that smacks you with notes of warm vanilla sweetness. Very good smoothness and balance allows the deeper Stout character to emerge pretty effortlessly and a lot easier than many other Barrel-Aged beers that I've tried. Big chewy flavors of chocolate, roasted malts and coffee, darkish tasting fruits, soy sauce, and a sense of woody oak that gives off a touch of funkiness to the proceedings. The Bourbon strikes back in the finish, leaving a warm sweet smack on the lips that lingers. The mouthfeel is full bodied with a beefy creaminess up front that then thins out a bit towards the end of the swallow. There is a pretty hefty alcohol presence at work here but it only becomes a touch stinging towards the end. It definitely combines with the Bourbon in the finish to leaves a hot and hazy feel on the breath that you might want to keep away from an open flame. The overall feel isn't quite as beefy as some others but I think that the alcohol is covered up pretty well here (for the size) and more than makes up for the depth of the body.

Wow! Lovers of Bourbon, complex Imperial Stouts, or both can rejoice, as it seems that we've got a new Barrel-Aged Beast of the East that can hold its own. This is a hot beer at times and a sipper for sure (and I suspect that the final ABV ended up being higher than 12%) but I never really found it to be too overly stinging and didn't impact the other flavors as much as I would have thought it could have. If you come across this, I'd definitely grab an extra to cellar as this is going to smooth out even more and age nicely. Relax by the fire, light up a stogie, and enjoy!
