Style: German Kellerbier / Zwickelbier

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Formerly PILZILLA.

Pilzilla is a beer that I've been brewing for years. Each year it gets bigger and bigger. Nicknamed "The beer that took over Tokyo". It is an unfiltered Keller Bier. Nicley hopped at this point with 6 to 7 different kinds of hops and about 6.25 % ABV Each year we will add another variety of hop and bump the alcohol a bit. This is not your average pilsner, get it before we drink it all! Prost!!

12oz bottle poured into a pint

A- pours a slightly hazy pale straw color with a one-finger foamy white head that has decent retention that reduces to a film floating on top

S- floral and grassy hops, cracker, doughy malt, undertones of honey & lemon

T- grassy and citrus hop notes up front, followed by cracked pepper, crackers, doughy malt and a hint of lemon. The finish gives some herbal/earthy yeast notes and lingers of grassy and herbal hops

M- medium body with medium carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that continues into a crisp finish

O- probably the most flavorful I've had of the style

Pours a hazed amber with 2+ fingers of rocky pearl colored head. Stays hazed, pretty good head retention & lacing

S: Bready, grassy,

T: Deep breadyness, grapefruit & grassy bitterness , along with dryness up front. Bitterness edges towards astringent, but pulled back by bready sweetneess & a little grapefruit,a touch of green melon as well once warm. Finishes dry, with herbal bitterness with just a little breadyness

MF: Medium body, delicate carbonation, pretty nice balance

Drinkable, but fairly complex. More botter than any Kellerbier I had in Germany

Excellent beer. Being unfiltered, it has kind of a gnarly look; like beer with a scrambled kombucha mother suspended in it. I think it looks cool. Smells fantastic as well; very sweet and malty, like an old DIPA after the hops have completely faded. Tastes like a pilsner on steroids. After-taste is maybe a little overwhelming in its sweetness (if I wanted to nitpick), but this is very good drinking.

This doesn't look unfiltered. It does smell like a very nice and lively kellerbier, though, with large nodes of grass and hay along with a nice little padding of alcohol sweetness.

The flavor profile is good but not as well-balanced as the aroma. Grassy malt up front like a walk through meadow in springtime, but the back end is quite heavy with bittersweet booziness lingering until well after the sip has been swallowed. It doesn't completely ruin the beer but it is a weird clash that doesn't really work for me.

12 ounce bottle into lager glass, no bottle dating. Pours slightly hazy medium golden/yellow color with a 1 finger dense white head with awesome retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of lemon, orange peel, pepper, pine, cracker, biscuit dough, light honey, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of earthy hops and bready malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of big lemon, orange peel, pepper, pine, cracker, biscuit dough, light honey, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of lemon, orange peel, pepper, pine, cracker, biscuit dough, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of earthy hops and bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero lingering hop astringency after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Perfectly clean on lager flavors, with zero yeast notes present. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/sticky, and lightly resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 7.5%. Overall this is a delicious imperial pilsner. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of earthy hops and bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the modestly bitter/drying finish. Really great balance of German malts and noble hops, and not too aggressive. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

With the near perfect nose and taste of this great big beer, it is easy to overlook any less perfect part of the (wonderful) drinking experience.

It's good looking in the glass, with moderate lacing and some suspended matter. The aroma is what beer should smell like, and the taste is better than you thought possible for the style. It's that good. The aftertaste is expectedly bitter.

Highly recommended. I need to get me some more.

Pours a hazy golden with a one finger white head, good retention.
Lemon, hearty malt, brown bread, some light dankness.
Tastes of caramel notes and toffee at first, followed by some juicy pine and light grapefruit, ending in a crisp, dry pine finish.
Mouthfeel is oily and full of resin.
Overall, awesome, much like a light ipa.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours golden with a subtle haze; small fluffy white head that fades leaving nice retention and sticky lacing. The aromas have your typical lager/pilsener aroma. Lots of fresh bread and crackers. Some sweet malts along with some honey. The flavors have a very solid bitterness. It's slightly earthy. Subtle hints of lemon and pine. More fresh bread and crackers. Grains are there. Finishes bitter and on the drier side for the most part. Alcohol basically goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is nice. It's medium-bodied with moderate to active carbonation. It's very fluffy, creamy, smooth and easy to drink.

This is a pretty solid "Imperial Lager". It's enjoyable and the craftsmanship is on point.

12oz bottle poured into a weizen glass
A: Light orange with a 1/2-finger head
S: Banana and sweet malts
T: Herbal, hoppy but with a sweet malt background
M: Medium-bodied, an interesting bitter/sweet mix
O: A unique, drinkable style that overall is better than the sum of its parts

Was too hopped for my preference, at least for this style of beer. Besides, even the base malt bill was mushy and blase, add on the bitterness to what is normally a refreshing style and you have a misfire
