Style: Kellerbier / Zwickelbier

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Formerly PILZILLA.

Pilzilla is a beer that I've been brewing for years. Each year it gets bigger and bigger. Nicknamed "The beer that took over Tokyo". It is an unfiltered Keller Bier. Nicley hopped at this point with 6 to 7 different kinds of hops and about 6.25 % ABV Each year we will add another variety of hop and bump the alcohol a bit. This is not your average pilsner, get it before we drink it all! Prost!!

Was too hopped for my preference, at least for this style of beer. Besides, even the base malt bill was mushy and blase, add on the bitterness to what is normally a refreshing style and you have a misfire

Clear amber-gold with a short off-white cream blanket.

Smell is banana skin, apple, bread and white grape.

Taste leans semi-bitter with grass, white grape, grapefruit, and pine over a medium crisp froth, gliding smooth and finishing semi-dry to a gradually drier chew.

Darker yellow. Smells a little sweet but the taste is very hoppy especially in the finish tickling the back of your throat. Plenty of alcohol for such an easily drinkable beer.

Bottle poured into a Sam Adams glass

Translucent yellow, plenty of streams of carbonation, thick, frothy one finger white foam cap, some lacings

Aroma of grain , malt , straw

Taste of grain, slight sour, gentle lingering hoppiness on the back of the tongue

Feel the alcohol

Okay beer

Another instance of the classic "oh, this is a rock-solid beer, I wonder how strong it is...Woah! I expected half of that." Like I said, rocksolid and exotic take on the style

The 7.5% and 8-hop variety, poured from a bottle into a tulip. Noses like a German wheat beer (hops, hefeweizen wheat). Pours a faintly hazy dark straw (almost honey) with a half finger white head rapidly rising and receding. The palate is much more akin to a kellerbier (or even somewhere between a hefeweizen and a dunkel) - definitely a far cry from a lager or pilsner (and that's a very good thing). Also, impressively, a beer that avoids the body issues of the other Voodoo brews. Like Hoodoo, this beer is staunchly light-medium, and does not have the underbodied dilemma of almost all of Voodoo's stouts. Overall, a great hybridization of styles resulting in a crisp, drinkable, interesting beer. Solid.
