A: 12oz into a tulip. Pours abyss black with a tan/brown head with really nice retention. It leaves some creamy lacing.

S: Smell was very subtle when first poured. Once it warmed up a bit, it smelled Belgian with raisins, spices, sweet dark fruits, and bananas.

T: Taste at first was very subtle like the smell. It had bit of a cola taste. Once it warmed a little, a lot more came through. It got a good deal spicier, like a Belgian spicy plus herbs and spices not from the yeast, with raisins, other dark fruits and wood/roasted/smoky notes, syrup, fog from a fog machine, espresso, vanilla, with a slightly bitter finish.

M: Creamy yet thin.

D: Drinkability was alright. Not something you want to drink a lot of.

I really liked how unusual this was. It was very complex yet subtle even as everything shined through later on. I'm happy I ordered this; it was a great experience.

On tap at Hawthorne's yesterday.

Pouring black with a dense brown head with good retention and moderate lacing, this beer looks good in my oh-so-hip mason jar. The nose is great, almost stout-like, with roast, toast, light caramel, light cocoa, light tartness (from the Schisandra berries) that is clearly berry-like. There's also rosemary, juniper and raisins. Quite floral, I'm told that there's hibiscus as well, and it shows.

The palate opens a touch over-carbonated with a nice tartness, a mild berry character and a moderate floral character. Juniper and raisins are present, this is drying on the finish with cocoa and caramel with a little toast. Medium-light in body, this is solid stuff. The spice character lingers on the finish, lending a mild astringency, but thankfully, it's not really unwelcome. Solid stuff.

I am reviewing this here since it was brewed at Voodoo according to Stillwater's website. Purchased the growler at Brass Rail Deli in Campbelltown. Poured chilled into a willybecker. I think it has more in common with a saison style-wise than a wit personally even though it is brewed with wheat.

A - A very dark brown with light beige head that lasts a very long time. The lace clings in thick rings of webbing. The clarity is opaque and the bead is fine

S - The smell - well, a plethora of yeast esters right off the bat and toasted grain, mild pepper and slight anise aroma w/ a mild fruit tinge - possibly raisin, but it doesn't jump out at you even though it was brewed with raisins

M- A thick and creamy feel, slightly astringent and mild roasted notes w/ a light spice and dry finish

T - The flavor of the black wheat is multi-faceted with mild currant and bitter cocoa along with slight coffee flavor and salted bean essence. The tinges of fruit hover in the background with a herbal tinge and mild black pepper quality. The depth is not limited to that as the hibiscus gives a tart astringency to the mix and juniper adds slight pine accent to the mild woody overall lingering earthy flavors. It has a lot of elements to take in in one beer, but they don't become jumbled, rather seem to hold their own and come at the taste buds one at a time

D - I drank the whole growler, I really enjoyed the experience - it pushed the boundaries of style, yet did not go over the top with ingredients for the sake of adding to the list of exotic herbs and fruit. I enjoyed this as a beer to savor, not your ordinary saison or wheat - I hope this is something they will revisit in the future.

This brew poured out nice a dark looking with a thin tan colored head on top. The lacing wasn't too bad and the retention was decent as well. The smell of the beer was a little on the sweet roasted side, with some elements of earth in there too. The taste of the beer was loaded with some herbal and dark fruity flavors that I found to be pretty good. The mouthfeel os the beer could have had a little more body in my opinion, it was just a little too thin I think. Overall it was a good brew, but it could have been better in some ways obviously.

On tap at hulmeville inn. I talked to matt allen about this stuff and his words were like or don't, fuck styles.

A- deep dark murky red brown in color with a good finger of tan head that settles quickly to some sticky lace and wisps on the surface.

S- herbal and spicy at first with some sweetish dark malts. Hints chocolate and molasses. Some fruity floral hits.

T- wow that's complex. Roasted malts and hibiscus sun tea. Bakers chocolate and tropical fruit. Musty yeast slightly spicy and floral.

M- medium to light in body and an ample mid level carb. Dry finish.

D- very interesting and quite drinkable. Not really sure where this stuff is taking me but I'm down to go.
