big thanks to Shilt for tossing this one my way. what an amazing surprise. meant to hang onto this for a share, but i just couldn't wait any longer....bottle # 236. enjoyed from the 22oz barrel room collection voodoo snifter.

a - brew poured a fairly stunning lush black sludge that had a really nice barrel shine to it. deep, rich and ominous. had a thin dark tan head that was gone shortly after the pour settled.

s - i sniffed the bottle when it first opened and nearly passed out from joy. the lush chocolate and booze was just outrageous. upon closer inspection in the glass, BOOM there it is. BIG LUSH CHOCOLATE. black magick is a BIG beer, putting it in buffalo trace barrels certainly compliments this but makes it a booze fiesta. the wood smooths it over though carrying some vanilla, but make no mistake, you will get drunk from this least that's what the nose tells me.

t - really impeccable. chocolate and wood. some vanilla. this beer is extremely balanced. nothing is too much in any one direction. putting black magick into a barrel was a GREAT idea.

m - wow, the first thing that jumps out at me is the chewiness of this beer. it is so full and rich, but so drinkable. thick. what the nose tells you about the booziness is gone when this touches your lips. truly amazing at how well the ABV is integrated into the flavor.

o - overall, i am floored by this beer. so massive, but so drinkable. the barrel puts everything in it's right place. looking forward to trying the pappy and hopefully getting my hadns on the others...maybe even another bottle of this. what a treat!

A - Dark chocolate with no light getting thru. No head at all or signs of carbonation

S - Chocolate and vanilla with a big whiff of Buffalo Trace bourbon which gives it oak, caramel and slight booziness near the back end

T - Chocolate up front with the taste of a caramel square as well. Vanilla sweetness comes through from the barrel. Light oak and bourbon in the finish

M - Medium creamy body with light roasted and astringent aspect to it in the finish

O - Tasty and well integrated stout with a good barrel presence, vanilla and caramel to it.

Did the full side-by-side-by-side with the Apple Brandy and Pappy versions. Bottle #661 into a Cigar City snifter. Shared with schen9303.

Same as the other versions. Pours a .25 finger dark mocha colored head with poor retention. Beer is pitch black. Lacing is minimal. Stringy and spotty with decent cling. Thick, oily, monstrous legs. Solid.

Nose is chocolate, booze, leather, and a touch of lactose creaminess. Aromatic. Decent.

Opens chocolate, molasses, leather, and some woodiness. Sweet dark fruit in the middle mixed with an ample dose of booziness. Fudge and brownie sweetness too. Ends hot booze and fig. Aftertaste of molasses, booze and chocolate. Very good. But the alcohol covers the complexity a bit here.

Medium to full bodied with low carbonation. Smooth, slick, and oily in the mouth and goes down warm, viscous, and caressing. Messy finish with a strong, sweet, lingering aftertaste. A touch harsher going down than the Pappy though.

A very good beer but nowhere near the magnificence of the Pappy version. Compared to that, this is a bit harsher and the booze overtakes some of the more nuanced flavors that are present. Still well worth a try though.

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter. Bottle # 13.

Appearance - Thick viscous and inky black body. A few bubbles. Thin khaki collar.

Smell - Oaky barrel character. Rich vanilla and chocolate. Fudge. Bourbon is nice.

Taste - Sharp bourbon. Chocolate. Oak. Not as pleasant as the aroma. Sharp and boozy.

Mouthfeel - Medium low carbonation. Very boozy.

Overall - Not as good as the apple brandy barrel. Still excellent.
