This brew was served on tap at Black Lotus Brewery in Clawson, Michigan. It arrived in a 22oz Hefeweizen glass, showing a beer the color of freshly squeezed lemon juice. It held a two finger head of creamy bubbles that billowed out of the glass, showing fine retention into thick cratered lacing circumferentially. A thick haze permeated the clarity, with chunky sediment suspended throughout. Carbonation appeared to be active. The aroma gave easy white wheatiness, gritty mineral, banana esters, chalky oat, coriander, orange zest, and toasty pale grain to thin things out. With warmth came wet stone dirtiness, light soapy pucker, and distant grassy hops. Our first impression was that the flavoring was quite light, but fit the bill in the refreshment category if that’s was you’re looking for. As we sipped, the taste opened with spicy coriander, orange peel bite, whole white peppercorns, big wheatiness to blend, nutmeg, raw ginger shavings, bright lemon juice, honey ham meatiness, clovey phenols, and allspice. The middle came to a peak with spruce bitterness, watered wheatiness, pale grain wash, continued clove and coriander, wet musk, oat, and vegetal grassiness. The finish came washing through with more spice of clove and black pepper, green olive meatiness, orange flesh sweetness, light plum sugars, wheat, bread pudding sugars, phenolic plastics, cooled banana bread, sweaty saltiness, and herbal basil spiciness. The aftertaste breathed of bright peppery spice, banana ester sweetness, sarsaparilla root bite, dried apricot, clove, coriander, raw wheatiness, white flour, and raw sourdough. The body was light, and the carbonation was light to medium. Each sip gave okay slurp, sip, and cream, with bigger froth affording a crisp coolness to coat the mouth. This gave way to faint dryness of clean and mild astringency. Burning spice was left across the tongue, even with large intervals between sips. The abv was appropriate, and the beer glugged easily.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this beer was the spice through the taste, which then translated interestingly into the mouthfeel. For such a low abv beverage, and something that started so simple and basic through the feel, it was generously rejuvenated by warmth. The spice became bright throughout, especially for the otherwise light base of flavoring, leaving that curious prickle and burn across the tongue and hard palate. The nose was comparatively light, but kept it true to the style. This marks a good attempt on the style, and a flavor that will definitely keep the fire burning throughout the summer.
