Brewed by:
Wind River Brewing Company
Wyoming, United States

Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.40%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
A brown porter by style. This beer is actually deep red in color. It is also a very light beer. Porter gets its dark appearance from chocolate and roasted malted barley. This malt gives our porter some sweet chocolate flavors. This ale is very lightly hopped and finishes slightly dry.

Almost pitch black, with a small head of foam that quickly shrinks leaving some lacing behind.

Roasted malt and grain in the smell but not very aromatic. Some sweetness around too.

Light roasted malt, sweet malt, light grain with a small zap of hop bitterness. Nice.

Good mouthfeel this medium bodied, lightly carbonated Porter has.

Overall, it's an enjoyable and easy to drink Porter. The Howler will be easy to empty.

Served with a 6 beer sampler set this was the last beer of the six I tried.

A = The color and head or almost perfect.
S = This could be improved but only a little the aroma is noticeable and pleasent.
T = The first touch of beer to tounge makes me very giddy, then the fade occurs as I swallow. The flavor doesn't last like it should. Damn! Good flavor while it lasts. Room for improvement.
M = Not your typical porter in this catergory. Pretty light espeacially on the back end.
D = Maybe with the weak body on this beer makes it so drinkable almost sessionable.

If this beer had a small tweek in the grain bill this could be a fantastic brew. Overall as is, I would order it, if I were at the pub.

Served on-tap in a Shaker pint at Gun Barrel (Jackson Hole, WY).

A: Murky dishwater brown-ruby with a short cap of head that faded and looked like it has head retention issues. A few scraps of lacing.

S: Caramel sweetness with some chocolate notes, dark malt prune/plum aromas. MInimal hop aroma, mildly herbal. Slight fruity yeast esters, no alcohol character.

T: Fairly sweet but with a nice earthy character as well. Nice medium caramel notes with chocolate and prune and fig dark malt flavors as well. Low bitterness and minimal hop contribution to flavor. Fruity, sweet yeast esters and no alcohol detectable.

M: A little thin with lowish carbonation and light body.

O: Not a bad effort at the style but the body needs some help to get up to the level of the rest of the brew.
