pours a shockingly light brown with caramel and amber accents. Looks more like a dark nut brown ale than a porter. A fairly thin half finger head of a dirty cream fizzles out leaving just a hint of light lacing.
aroma is strong and sweet, with roasted malts, maple, caramel and vanilla. hints of toasted coconut and pecan... very sweet malting and sugars. maybe a hint of cocoa, but mostly sugar and nuts.
Taste is interesting as well. Lighter and not quite as roasted as I'm accustomed to for an American porter, with strong hazelnut and almond flavors backed with a definite maple sweetness. A hit of spicing and hops but the malt sweetness is prevalent. Some pleasant light roasted flavor, with hints of cocoa comes through nicely.
mouthfeel is a touch high on the carbonation with hints of prickliness, although it cuts nicely through the thick - verging on syrupy - consistency. Nothing outstanding, but definitely a drinkable mouth.
All in all, an interesting brew with some nice aspects goin' on inside. A bit different from the traditional american porter, which is a welcome change. this one almost reminds me of a rich brown ale or nut brown, in a good way. The roasted notes are pleasant and the sweetness is definitely enjoyable. Not on the top of my list, but I wouldn't turn one away.

Picked up a 6 pack of this once while visiting elrogish.
Pours brown, leans to the darker side of the brown spectrum. Tan head 1/2" deep. Average retention. Roasted malt. We're looking and smelling pretty standard thus far.
Taste is still checking all the style guideline boxes. Roasted malt, pinch of chocolate malt. Carbonation was fair. Heft wasn't over the top, bittering hops evident. Burnt bitterness adequately conveys the majority of what this porter is about and its like right down the middle of what an American porter's range is. You don't see a lot of that these days. Instead it is likely losing shelf space to marshmallow cocoa nib coffee coco crisp adjunct city creations. I'm into both, but you just don't see a lot of 6 packs like this around anymore, heck I can't even remember the last time I saw Sierra Nevada Porter anywhere outside of Chico.
Only drawback I saw was the bitter black licorice note in the taste and mouthfeel. It wasn't like they added anise/licorice, but it was still not my jam in that regard.

Beautiful dark brown/black, with a pretty, pale head.
Smells just bad. Stale. Like a badly corked wine. Musty, wet cardboard. Maybe an off-bottle or old? Total Wine here usually has quick turnover, so probably not.
Taste is quite good. Malty. Classic. Hint of bitterness. Not super complex. Session porter, not profound porter.
Rich mouthfeel, very pleasant carbonation.
Overall this is a pretty decent beer, except for the smell, which just knocks it out of the box. Don't buy again, except to verify the smell of this bottle wasn't an aberration.
