Pours opaque brown with a thick, foamy, rocky off-white head. Metallic wheat aroma, with only a small amount of clove and bubblegum. Sour wheat taste at first, but after 2-3 pulls, it gets a nice cereal taste with a good amount of banana. I've had better, but this is not that bad.

A decent Dunkelweizen that misses the typical clove and Banana yeast esters in Weizenbier.I was somewhat underwhelmed given "Hopf"'s reputation.

#1824 - Blind-tasted except for the beer's name and brewery/country, zero reviews below read (yet!)...
L- Dark red-brown (apparent when held to a halogen) and notably cloudy despite being well rested/handled etc. Pours with a v nice looking 15mm mid tan fine-bubble foam head. ps @ +10mins, holds really well forms lacing.
S- Typical lightly spicy weissen notes.
T- Bright front, even slightly sour tasting, and some very minor malts tag along after. What a surprise. Now that was my first sip of beer today so my palate is accute but I really wasn't expecting sour to be the predominant note from a trad dunkle-weisse. - Later my palate chills out and the sour aspect tones down quite a bit.
F- Another surprise for a dark beer - it's surprisingly thin feeling, and this is further amplified (unfortunately) by notably very good/high CO2 in the mouth.
O- It's surprisingly thin feeling and the taste lacks dimensions/depth. It comes over as about 3.8-4.2%ABV though it can't be or I wouldn't have bought it! Surprisingly underwhelming in the taste and feel department, what a shame... I wouldn't buy it again, in fact I don't think I'd wish to drink it again full stop, there are soooo many way better dark weisse than this one.
Review/scoring all done, now the reveal, I get to read the lables to see what I missed! Wow it's 5.3%, and it's brewed per the Reinheitsgebot (trad brewing law)... so honestly a bit of mystery that it presents how it does...
500ml bottle BB: 01-11-2021 £3 Bought from TremblingMadness, York/UK as part of a large pick-your own consignment to London.

Poured from the bottle into a wheat ale glass.

Deep burgundy red to chestnut brown body color, a real magnificent looking appearance. Head creation manages to stay subtle, a small khaki topped head of about a finger, slightly creamy and flattened but always manages to stay put. The body glows like a gemstone nearly, with faint white snow like carbonation peaking out at the bottom. Great looking brew.

The aroma even off the pour and at rest is large. A big large estery quality but more so, an almost raspberry caramel coming off the brew. Creamy sensing mix of vanilla as well, nearly comes off like caramel dipped apples. This is real impressive for a dunkel, very excited to see how this turns out.

Palate is more toned down, but still impressive. A considerably lighter body, that forgoes classic chewy wheat density, but manages still excellent flavors. Raspberry and light caramel hit the mid palate real large, controlled sweetness, and more of a bitter tannic quality. Real large walnut tannic nutty flavor, with light hints of creamy hazelnut on the finish. Slightly playful and effervescent carbonation, but doesn't go flat or go into hot mineral gas. Dry with excellent nutty quality. A real mix of flavors going on here.

In a way, it doesn't remind me of a typical dunkelweizen, but the beer's character is so unique and flavorful that I just can't nit pick this.

What to drink on a February day that is a global-warming induced 60 degrees?
Instead of worrying if the climate had gone to hell, I did something I could control: I finished my bike ride on the 606 (along with a good portion of the bemused population) and selected a beer that is dark (since winter lasts two more months) and refreshing (since I had exercised in 60 degree heat.)

What a great combination: a dunkleweiss.
I got even more venturesome and decided to experiment on the pour.
First in weizen glass. The foam behaved, so I stuck my snout in and the fruit smells were there.
For the other half, I thought, why not a stange?
Mistake. Half the glass was head and I got only half a whiff of the fruit.
Learned something.

The rest was a good dunkle, probably interesting... but maybe watery.
I will buy it again... if I ever find it again.
As for the 60 degrees in February on Lake Michigan... that's a little too interesting.

Thick brownish head when poured. Beer has a golden brown color. Smells like wheat, with a hint of spice. Very smooth tasting, small bubbles, stays on the tongue a long time. This is one of my favorite beers by one of my most favored brewers. This can be an expensive beer if purchased in a restaurant but can be purchased at places like Beverages and More for a more reasonable sum. Their Hefe Weisse is my absolute best beer and it has a champagne quality to it. First exposed to this beer at Mille Fleur Restaurant in Sancho Santa Fe, CA. It was a great addition to the meal and took the place of champagne which I cannot drink.

Hopf Dunkle Weisse has an extremely thick, foamy, beige head, a hazy, lighter brown appearance, with bubble streams, and heavy lacing left on the glass. The aroma is of spicy, brown bread, and the flavor is of the same, with underlying tap water and low bitterness. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Hopf Dunkle Weisse finishes semi-dry and dull.

Poured from 500mL bottle into a weizen glass.

Appearance: medium brown hue with plenty of haze and an inconveniently huge four fingers of frothy tan foam atop. Not bad.

Smell: quite wheaty with what I fancy to be a hint of chocolate. There's a good banana character here as well, which I quite like. It works.

Taste: a light wheatiness with a good phenolic character and a generally refreshing flavor. I like it.

Mouthfeel: kind of disappointingly thin, especially for the style. The carbonation is pretty good which helps, but I feel like a wheat beer should have more to offer here.

Overall: not bad, but the lack of a really good texture hurts this beer for me.
