This place has the ultimate beer/wine selection on the Outer Banks. Any beer lover needs to stop by Chips on their way into their favorite vacation staff. The staff there is very friendly and knowledgeable.

If you are looking for beers from around the united states and around the world this is the place to go. Very well organized and easy to find the beer you want. Do not hesitate to ask the staff for some help because they are very helpful and knowledgable in all things beer. They offer various tasting opportunities throughout the week as well.

Stopped by on our last day of vacation, wished I found it sooner. Great selection. Service was fine, they left us alone long enough to fill up a few six packs. And then asked what we liked and made some great suggestions (Two Hearted being one).
We were happy with the few micros at the Food Lion or Brew Thru. But our vacation would have been much better had we stopped here sooner. So make this your first stop in the Outer Banks, or spend twelve hours driving home wishing you had.
PS. make it a point to find Duck Donut's as well.

I was in Kill Devil Hills for NYE weekend and went to visit Chip's after reading the great reviews here. From the moment I walked it, I liked the place. My twin brother and I were greeted warmly upon entering and quickly made our way to the beer section.
Being from the Washington DC area, I am used to paying slightly higher prices, so I was pleased with the single bottle prices.
The staff was super helpful. We monopolized a lot of one gentleman's time by asking for local stuff. We talked to him about other collaborations and he even told us a seafood market to hit up upon request!
I thought the selection was pretty good, and I liked that it was organized by style of beer. Although, I think I would almost prefer if the same brand was together.
Overall, a great, great store. I didn't try anything in the tasting room, but they had some good stuff on tap, such as DFH Burton Baton.

very good selection for the area,
wall of singles and a couple of aisles of 6 and 12pks,
one stop shopping, beer, shirts, glasses and if you need some wine, a very good selection available

beer prices were with in reason, about the same as some of the smaller shops in my area, many were priced the same as the local Harris Teeter

very knowledgeable and attentive staff, I was looking for selections not available in VA, and the clerk was very helpful, and knowledgeable about what was available in both VA and MD,

a must stop for any beer geek traveling thru OBX

during last weeks trip to the OBX i took an afternoon to drive to chips (an hour north of where i was staying) and was thoroughly impressed. a wall of over 400 single bottles satisfied my mix-n-match jones and there was no bottle that was dusty, sticky, or past its prime. high turn over rate is very important to me. the store itself is clean, well maintained, and classy. beers on the wall are arranged by style, with many hard to find bottles available including 5 of the 7 trappist breweries. too many craft brews and imports to name. full line of american adjunct lagers as well with an apparent big seller being yuengling as it is almost everywhere in the OBX. there's also 4 doors worth of cooler space that contained other impressive bottles that werent on the wall. nice little area for glassware next to the beer wall as well and i happily picked up a delirium tremens tulip and a chimay goblet. the rest of the store is a huge selection of wine and wine accoutrements of every type with some attractive scotch glasses and sake sets. there's also a narrow humidor with a selection of about 15 quality cigars and a rack of arsty high end snacks by the register. didn't get to speak to chip but the store manager was awesome and chips daughter was very friendly at the register. they had empty case boxes at the ready so customers don't have to awkwardly pile up multiple six packs in their arms. the best beer store i've ever visited and one that i will frequent every year.

Got to visit Chip's on several occasions during our vacation on the Outer Banks.

The selection was awesome. The staff was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. They even got me a special request from their distributor while I was there.

This is a must-visit place if you're in the area, especially of you're from a beer-deprived state like me, or from the Left Coast :-)

Prices for singles added up pretty closely to the six-pack prices, too, so you can try many different kinds. They're not snobs, either - they even had BudMillerCoors for those so inclined.

We attended the Wine University one evening, too. Chip knows his business and is very personable and well-spoken. Unfortunately, we were there in the off-season and he was doing classes just once a week.

I go to the Outer Banks every summer for a week at the beach. When I first arrive, I always stop by Chips to stock up on beer for the week. That's my insurance for enjoying my week regardless of the weather!

They have a very good selection of craft beers (as well as wine), at good prices. And their employees are always very friendly and helpful. Another small bonus is that they're in NC and I live in VA, so they get a few beers distributed there that I don't otherwise have access too.

Visiting Chips is an annual tradition!

Went here New Years Eve, rented a house for the weekend and heard about this place. Great store, nice selection of NC beers and lots of otehrs. Great Avery selection as well. Chip, or that who I think helped us, was super friendly and helped us find some North Carolina gems that don't leave the state. Looked like a fun tasting room as well but we didnt' partake. Great store, no need to bring your own beer to the Outter Banks when Chip's is there for you, unless you want a higher ABV beer. They know their stuff.

Thank you BA for helping me discover a store in a place I've been going to for 25 years!

Went here for the first time this past summer and again over the Christmas holiday. My family stays up north in Duck, but the drive down here is very worthwhile.

Very friendly owner who explained the layout and answered questions. Large selection of single bottles as well as six packs. Owner said pretty much everything is available as a single so he was mostly fine with breaking up 4/6 packs. Noticed a large selection of craft cans too this past visit, which will be good to remember next summer when more beach time is possible.

Nice to see Outer Banks Brewing Station bottles here along with other NC locals (Highland, Mother Earth, Duck-Rabbit). Also some midwest stuff that I can't get in California. Bells, Founders, New Holland, Ska, for example.

Some cool glassware along the back wall.

Guy at check-out even carried out the heavy box I put together out to my car. Great service! Chip's will be a regular stop for me from now on.

Super helpful staff that made great recommendations. Great selection that was very well organized. Love the pick a six option. How can you not love a place that will sell you a pint and let you shop?

Will certainly become a staple during our OBX trips.

I am probably Biased since this is my locale store, but I love this place. They are really friendly and helpful. They definitely know how to keep customers happy.

The selection is huge for being on the OBX. I have yet to work my way through half of them. They always have a selection of seasonals too. No one on the beach has as many beers as they do. You simply won't find certain styles elsewhere.

They carry a couple of NC brews that you might not find other places like Duck Rabbit, Highland, and Mother Earth.

The prices are very reasonable. I love grabbing an empty six pack carrier and filling it up with new beers. Building your own six pack is mos

If you are a BA on the OBX you should stop by.

Amazing selection. I first walked in and saw only the 3 cold doors, only about 1 had singles but all the doors essentially were some exclusive beers. The only big names they had were 12's of miller, bud, and corona, and tecate. I thought it was great. Then I glanced over to my left and saw the most amazing thing I have ever seen. The great wall of beer. It had to be over 500 singles from all over the world. Then they still had a complete isle of 6 packs from everywhere. The prices were great too... nothing too over the top. Not a snobby place, very clear. A great atmosphere.

Chip's in KDH is a must for any BA's in the OBX. The staff is friendly, engaging, and knowledgable. The selection is as good as any you will find in the area. Plus, they have a good selection of cold beer in the cooler to your right as you're walking into the store. Since they added the bar area, I have enjoyed sipping on a beer (or two) as I shop. Chip's also has a decent selection of glassware.

When in the outer banks I always stop here a couple of times. It is pretty much the only game in town. Big city caliber as far as selection goes. As with most places that are the only game prices are a bit high. When the owner or his wife are in service is great, when they are not in service is fine. I emailed ahead of time and after one or two messages they held a few bottles for me (lips of faith and Allagash), stuff I can't get at home. They do have a couple of taps so it is nice to have a drink in hand while shopping.

Spent a week in the Outer Banks and made sure to make a trip here after looking at some of the reviews on BA.

This is definitely a must visit for anyone in the area tourist or not, they've got a great selection with an average price range. I live in VA so its only one state away but there were still a large number of brews/breweries I don't regularly see. Very awesome service and organization. Found a couple gems on the wall o beer and also picked up a six pack. Staff was super friendly and very helpful to some shoppers around me. Seemed very knowledgeable as well. Its a great stop!

Wanted to stop back by before leaving but unfortunately didn't get a chance to. Really wish I would have!

There is actually another Chips about 45 minutes down 158 that's hidden away as well in a shopping center with a Sonic and Burger King. They weren't open when I went by but its a nice first or last beer stop on your way in or out of North Carolina.

What a fantastic place it a great part of the world. First time to the Outer Banks for me and it won't be my last. If you are looking for a less commercial, beautiful location this is it.

Chip's is not hard to find as everything is laid out by Mile marker (or half mile marker) on Croatan Hwy. Chips is right around mile marker 6 in the Mile 6 Plaza on the West side of the road.

Quality is great. They have all of the quality product that are available to them. If they can get it, they have it.

Service was fantastic. They had no less than two people walking (not a huge, warehouse store) the floor asking people if they needed help. Additionally, they all wore matching black bowling shirts with red stripes, so it is very easy to find them when you need help. I didn't have to find anybody. I was asked if I needed help as soon as I walked in and had all of my questions answered. Including what distributor handled what beer and even if the last bottle of sparkling sake I picked up in addition to the Starr Hill was the only bottle/kind they had.

Selection was great. Their shelves are stocked to the brim with a great selection. They could carry more, but I don't know where they would put it or if it would turn as quickly. Everything looked fresh and recently stocked. Nothing jumped out at me as being old.

Prices were great, but I didn't focus to much on the price. Just on what I could or couldn't get at home.

Fantastic place that I will visit again.

I have been going to this place every year while visiting the Outer Banks. Good service, nice people working there. The beer selection was nice every time I was there with offers of help in finding my choice for the evening.

One thing I noticed while having a terrific cup of coffee next door at the Front Porch Cafe. Chips closes at 7. Long before most of us are back from the beach, showered, and finished eating. They miss out on so much business because they aren't open when you are looking for a good quality beer.

On one occasion my wife and I counted at least 10 people who drove up, looked in the window , then drove over to the Brew Through down the road. Funny thing. A coffee shop is open until 9, but the beer place closes at 7.

2008 Update!

Chip has expanded the hours he's open. His prices have improved as well. My yearly trip to the OBX included several stops to pick up some great beer at a good price. The selection, as always is outstanding.

We always try to support the locals when we go to the Outer Banks. Local people like Chip make the place what it is.

Very pleased and will be back next year.

I made a stop here on my way to Salvo, NC for a weeks vacation on the beach. Thank the gods for this place. The selection was great. They had plenty of offerings I can't get up in Massachusetts - I was particularly gunning for NC based breweries and Chip's delivered.

Service was excellent. The guy running the joint knew what he was talking about and had answers for all of my questions.

All the beers I purchased from the store tasted fresh and seemed to be well cared for.

Very reasonably priced.

If you are a beer fan and going on vacation to the Outer Banks stop at Chip's it is worth the trip.
