I visited this place during their Easter beer festival in mid-April 2006, and it was my first time to visit a pub in the Greater London area that has a lovely "country-side" feel... A "coaching inn" style pub situated on a narrow hillside road, and at the fringe of the local residential area. But it's not so difficult to walk to, merely 15 minute walking distance (uphill) away from the Chorleywood tube station, NW of London, or, Heronsgate-Hertfordshire.

Old-ish decor with lots of wood in the interior, original exposed wood beans on the ceiling. The real log-fire was very welcome given the slightly chilly temp. for April. A couple of local punters enjoyed themselves with good portioned, homemade pies, and some low-beat, light '70-80s rock as background music, the place was quite cosy and relaxing for me.

The L-shaped bar serves both fronts to suit the pub's shape. Five handpumps altogether, with Young's Bitter and London Pride as regulars, but the ever-changing guest ales (from esp. Herdforshire) are the real hit at this award-winning pub. As it was the first day of the beerfest., every festival beer was fresh, nice, impeccable. Besides five served at the bar, four-six more were ready on stillages in the cellar. The landlord (Martin) and landlady (Gill) walked down- and upstairs frequently to meet the punters' demand, and they seemed to really enjoy seeing the ale-loving punters' satisfied faces than anything else. All were served in oversized lined glasses (most of them printed "Watford CAMRA Festival"), which I highly appreciate, and inconsistency of real ale quality is a non-issue in this pub. After some enquiries, I even got to taste two more beers just "coming of age" thanks to the Martin and Gill's kind check in the cellar.

For those less passionate about real ales, Kaltenberg Helles is on tap and a good handful of good Belgian bottled beers await in the fridge along with some bottle-conditioned real ales. To live up to its fame as the local real ale mecca (just voted as Pub of the Year, Watford and District CAMRA in Feb. 2006), Gill sometimes holds beer-tasting event too, while every now and then jazz, country/folk-music events plus BBQ, chocolate tasting, and even gourmet-food tasting take place here.

All in all, a seriously good countryside pub for top-notch real ales and local atmosphere. I'm sure any real ale lover would fall for this place right away!
