500ml bottle, thanks to papat444 for passing this one westward.
This beer pours a clear, medium golden amber hue, with a tower of fizzing, foamy, and bubbly off-white head, which renders a few broad swaths of lace around the glass as it genially (especially for its initial reach) subsides.
It smells of sugary caramel malt, sweet tropical fruit - pineapple, guava, and mango - with a soft peppery spiciness, and some ethereal yeast. The taste is more sweet grainy, sugarcane-esque malt, some newfound banana fruitiness, more dynamic spice - some clove and nutmeg joining the now more generalized peppery notes - with a wee bit of dry, earthy hops wedging their way in. A twinge of warming alcohol is apparent at first, and grows to no more than a thin metallic edge, at most, as things wind along the way.
The bubbles are subtly zingy and rather uplifting, the body on the light side, but only academically so - it duly supports a smooth, semi-enveloping nature. It finishes surprisingly dry, the malt absconding, the fruitiness flipping, and the hops and alcohol just plodding away at their faithful job.
A pretty decent Tripel, with nice fruity, booze-moderated flavours, an endearing sideshow of spice, and an appetizingly dry, but not hot, end to it all. I am so craving some pommes frites right now, and hold the ketchup...uh, right, the beer - grab this if you can, you shan't be disappointed!

Pilsner malt and abbey yeast strain does not a tripel make, and the improper balanced caused by such reckless consessions often leads to an ale that's simply messy with sweetness, fruit and spice. But no such worry here as the Le Trou Du Diable brewers have taken no such shortcuts.
La Buteuse catches the eye with a diffused glow of goldenrod hues. Its swath and meringue-like froth laces the glass beautifully and projects its fruity and spicy bouquet. As citrus and orchard fruit tease the nose, the taste bounces off of the early palate with sweetness of angel-food cake, confectioner's sugar and a whimsical honeysuckle upstart.
The ale simply blossoms over the middle palate, delivering waves of flavor- starting with an estery mix of papaya, apricot, pear, honeydew, lemon, orange and apple. A quick rebuttal from freshly grated white pepper, delicate clove, vanilla and mild earthy green cumin. But the saving grace of the tripel is its firm hop balance that's boldly bittered with a bright grassy flavor and a snappy, pepper-like bite.
The beer's medium body registers a milder weight upon the palate through is militant carbonation that gives the sweetness and breadiness a lift; drying the palate with promoting a peppery, hoppy finish. Warming to the senses, the tripel closes with mild Riesling-like acidity and a linger of bitterness and perfume.

Appearance: copper colour, a little misty; very fine, big head, colour of aioli, sticky and good retention
Aroma: great, full aroma - apricot, peach, mango, and mild spices & herbs - cilantro, touch of vanilla; butterscotch is the backbone; more exotic than expected
Taste & Mouthfeel: big butterscotch flavour is nicely cut by alcohol burn and astringent hops, preventing any chance to become cloying; more intense spice comes through just before the finish as well, and lingers - would call it peppery if anything, but hard to really place; very dry finish; fruit notes of aroma are negligible here; perfect carbonation, fine like champagne, and medium body
Overall: surprisingly easy drinking and keeps your interest throughout with interplay of spice, butterscotch and alcohol burn

Orange coloured and cloudy, with a small and poorly retained white head. Fruity, yeasty, and spicy aroma with notes of orange, banana, coriander, dry yeast, and pepper. Fruity and spicy flavour, and very lightly sweet. Citrus and banana, bready, cloves, and peppery. Light bitterness in the finish. Almost medium-bodied with low carbonation. Feels very smooth, but a little bit dead on the palate. I think a little bit more carbonation would be an improvement. A pretty good take on the style, definitely tending towards the drier end of the spectrum.

at Festival Bières et Saveurs 2009. Grapefruit cloudy body along with white lace. Taste is some sourness, and grapefruit. Its hoppy. Its a good drinking ale, with average mouthfeel. Yeast was secondary. I wonder how it is in the bottle with brett and oak ageing.
I had this again 2.5 years later in bottle and found it a very decent triple, though apple juice flavour and very boozy. Smooth mouthffel.

600 mL bottle. Clear orange from the top of the bottle. Hazy in the middle. Smells of citrus, Belgian yeast, and a strong malt presence. Taste has a ton of malt as well. Almost no citrus here. Yeast lends banana and some spice. Heavy caramel. Dries out quickly. Medium heavy. Medium carbonation. Malty version of a tripel, which might be a generous descriptor.

Shout out to andrenaline for including this in our last trade
A - fully hazy burnt orange hue, thumb of off white head fizzed but maintained its presence nicely
S - yeasty esters, sour orange and light tropical fruits, mild pepper and light floral
T - out of the gate strong with strong yeasty esters and grainy malts, mandarin, lemon pepper, and a bit of a fresh soapy thing going on, definitely interesting
M - creamy and well carbonated yet still relatively light, bit of a minerally mouth coating, touch of alcohol dryness and warmth through the finish
O - this is a nicely well rounded tripel with a lots of layered flavours, very drinkable at this ABV and a nice treat on this hot summer evening

Sampled on tap at the brewpub, keg was aged 10 months.
Appearance: Great looking golden brew with slightly amber reflections, with a ring of pearly white lace.
Smell: Spicy and sweet, bitter orange peel and lightly hopped, finished off with a bit of madeira/port.
Taste: Quite a sweet first attack, it hits you like maple taffee or hard sugar candy, it then takes on a more boozy, citrusy flavor. The complex sugars give it plenty of backbone, as they linger on your palate long after each sip, but it did get a little cloying near the end, not exactly something I look for in the style. I still liked it, but it could have used a little more time to mature and round out the sweetness.

Enjoyed from the 500 ml bottle in a snifter. This nice Belgian style tripel pours a hazy golden orange with a fantastic head of white foam that dissipates to a thick layer and generous ring of foam featuring wonderful lacing. Nose of light sweet breads, light lemon grass, light banana, sweet candy malts, and light herbal notes. Flavors are excellent featuring smooth moderately sweet candy malts to the side and back, a moderately spicy herbal note of lemon grass and light coriander, followed by a nice earthy yeast flavor. One of the best for this style I have had in some time. Medium effervescent and bubbly mouth feel gives this nice spritz to the stronger alcohol contained therein. Sweet aftertaste. Excellent. Hope to try more from this brewery.....especially the brandy version.
Cheers

From the 650 ml. bottle with a bottling date of 10-12-14. Sampled on April 18, 2016.
The pour is mainly orange-amber under a modest, short lasting off-white head.. Great clarity.
The aroma brings out the typical spicy Belgian toasted notes as well as an obvious fruity character. That tends to be the main thing.
Medium body.
The taste has some bite to it. Fruity characters, pepper, and Belgian spiciness. The finish is slightly bitter. There is an alcohol burn that coats (and stimulates my senses).
