BOTTLE: 50cl. Brown glass. Branded white & black pry-off crown cap. Appealing screen print label design.

4.2% ABV. 45 EBU. 14 EBC. Unfiltered. Brewed with American hops.

Reviewed live as a pale ale per the label. Expectations are above average given the brewery (which is one of the better ones I've come across in Finland). Served cold into a mason jar at low altitude in Kuopio, Finland, where it was purchased at a Prisma supermarket for 3.85 euro.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: Quarter finger wide. White colour. Somewhat thin, but creamy enough. Recedes quickly - within ~25 seconds, leaving no lacing on the sides of the glass.

BODY: Clear honey-copper of above average vibrance. Spot-on colour for a pale ale. Clean, with no visible yeast or sediment.

Appears aptly carbonated. I note no obvious flaws. Looks nice for a pale ale in spite of its poor head retention. Not unique or special, but attractive.

AROMA: Honey malts, tea-like bitterness, twig-like juniper-y hop bitterness, English pale malts, biscuit malt. I'm not finding the "citrus pulp" promised on Malmgard's website - or any American hop character for that matter. Seems English across the board.

Suggests a dry English pale ale with an uninteresting but pleasant hop profile. Aromatic intensity is average.

No yeast character, alcohol, or off-notes is/are detectable.

TASTE: The tea-like hop bitterness and honey malt/biscuit malt foundation are ill-suited to a pale ale. I find no citrusy hop character - or any American hop character whatsoever. Lacks any discernible English yeast character. It's odd for a pale ale, with an insufficient hop profile and none of the usual pale malts you'd expect.

Subversive to its detriment, this is a swing and a miss at a pale ale, and offers only average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour. Has wanting complexity. Lacks nuance or subtlety.

I do like it in a general sense, but it isn't well built or balanced and doesn't seem dialed in.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, somewhat refreshing, medium-bodied, and overcarbonated. Has overly high heft, weight, and thickness on the palate, lending it something of an overbearing presence when it should be light and easy to drink, with a delicate feel.

Doesn't accentuate any specific notes, nor does it elevate the beer as a whole. There's no harmony of texture to taste. But this mouthfeel complements the flavour profile decently in a broad general sense.

OVERALL: Drinkable but underwhelming and unremarkable. A failure of a pale ale, but generally approachable outside of style conventions. Like most Finnish attempts at hoppy styles, this has an insufficient (and dareisay boring) hop profile. If they must reduce the ABV for market reasons, why not go with the maximum supermarket allowance of 4.7% instead of paring it back all the way to 4.2%? The discerning drinker will find it disappointing - especially since Malmgardin is one of Finland's best (read: less shitty) breweries. I won't be revisiting this.

Beautiful hazy orange color, beuatiful white and creamy head.
Malty smell, english hops, tea leaves. Pleasant and interesting.
The taste is very well balanced, for a good drinakbiility. Hop in first sight, but not overwhelming the naltiness.
Clean, simple, well done.
Some citric notes, maybe a hint of american hop, but well balanced.
