I picked up a 12 pack sample winter pack by Starr Hill and one of them is this Snow Blind Dopplebock that has a hearty 7.7% ABV and promises to be delightful. Here we go.

Look-It pours a creamy smooth slightly off-white head that quickly settles into a thin film. The bubbles are tiny and creamy. It has a dark black color with mahogany hues in the light. I poured into a 22 oz goblet glass.

Smell-I smell sweet dark fruits and esters as well as licorice and cocoa. Specifically, black cherries and a malt backbone come through nicely.

Taste-I get a sweet flavor up front with the cocoa and fruits and then a lingering mildly acidic fruity flavor from the cherries and dark licorice.

Mouthfeel-It has a rich and smooth feel that isn’t too sweet, but serves as a nice winter brew. It is a medium-bodied brew with lots of character and flavors to explore.

Overall-The alcohol content is noticeable and warms the body as you drink if and provides many flavors to enjoy in front of a fireplace, for example. Be sure to pour this one though, because then you’ll get all the aromas that assist in the detection of the flavors. Cheers!

A: Pours a lightly hazy deep mahogany in color with moderate to heavy amounts of active visible carbonation and moderate amounts of garnet red highlights. The beer has a finger thick dense foamy tan head that slowly reduces to a thick film covering the entire surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of caramel & toffee malts with a moderate amounts of sweetness and lighter notes of dark fruits - figs and plums.

T: Upfront there is a moderate to strong flavor of dark, caramel & toffee malts with a hint of roasted malts as well. There is a light amount of sweetness and a light to moderate flavor of dark fruits (figs and plums). Hints of bitterness in the finish which does not linger for long.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly creamy.

O: Easy enough to drink and enjoyable but not exceptional - probably would not go for it again but not unhappy to have tried it. Alcohol is well hidden.

The snow blind from Starr hill is good....doppels are not my fav but this is drinkable. The beer poured a deep rich mahogany with razor thin head that is not leaving any lace. The scent is non-descript really...maybe a touch of bread. The taste is malty with a dry finish. The Mouthfeel is fuller in body with good carbonation. Overall it's worth a try.

A: cola-colored with carbonation that matches, initially. Quickly dissipating head that leaves nothing after a minute.
S: licorice, cola, little smokiness, and a twinge of alcohol
T: light biting sweetness - ginger like, but backed with earthy, cola tastes, can get a little toastiness and maybe a little dark chocolate deep in there. There is a presence of alcohol that grows as well
M: little pull from the alcohol and a very small amount if dryness from the hops. Carbonation is present as well, and a coating of licorice-like taste ends lingering.
O: my first few steps I liked it, it had a spiciness of a winter beer. The taste didn't grow on me though. There are some interesting flavors, and it does fit the seasonal style, but my palette was left wanting a little more body.

Great beer, enjoyed bottled and tapped. Too bad I can't get it all the time around me.

I understand what Starr Hill was going for on there season Snow Blind offering. I think they nailed the overall taste and finish of the beer. Very delicate and complex upfront and great going down. Almost too smooth for a dopplebock. The biggest detractor was nose at first sip. The caramel aroma was weak and had a slightly off aroma to it. If smell is not very important to you this beer is perfect for a late nightcap by the fireplace.

Appearance- brown/ruby hue, crystal clear, 1/2 finger head after a vigorous pour into a Duvel tulip. No lacing.

Aroma- starts bready, almost pumpernickel, followed by raisins and a little sweetness

Taste- closely follows aroma, starts bready, finishes sweet, with raisins there throughout

Feel- medium body and super smooth/creamy

Overall- very enjoyable drinking experience. My dopplebock experience is very limited, but this has me wanting to try more.
