L) Pours a slightly hazy straw/honey color with a short-lived head.

S) Fairly traditional nose, with notes of bread, banana, and clove. Quite pleasant.

T) The taste is rich with banana esters and lovely grainy notes.

F) The mouthfeel is almost a wee-bit creamy, and it has a medium-high carbonation. A pleasant to sip and swish.

O) A good representation of a German style hefe brewed in the states. An easy recommendation.

On tap:
Pours a slightly dingy yellow, lightly cloudy and with an enticing foamy to near creamy white head. The cap fades slowly, and drapes of lacing form.

Nose has banana up front with a smidge of bubblegum. A bit of wheat comes through upon closer inspection. There may be more nuance here, but atmosphere prevents noticing. Could go higher.

Taste too has a banana lean, but just slightly. I imagine a banana wheat sandwich bread (which sounds worse than I intend). There’s a little high note of very subdued lemon, and a hint of earthy that could be coriander (or more of the wheat in disguise).

Feel is just wonderfully soft, but light. Not challenging to the palate at all, this pour is near perfect feel (having had this before, it’s not an aspect I recall standing out).

Pleasantly surprised to grab this solely for review of a beer I neglected and completely enjoy it. I recall liking it in the past but expected a 3.7ish range. Definitely better than that.

Poured into a small chalice: color is murky gold/copper, head presents 1/2 inch thick with off white color, dissipating quickly to a ring.

Smell is very light with hint of clove and wheat.

Taste is similar with light flavors and more crisp presence than anticipate for the style; light clove, light biscuit but nothing emphatic.

Mouthfeel is very crisp, sharp, and bitter.

Overall an ok beer but more neutral wheat than hefe in style.

Feel The Love, Bro. Woody! I love when I open a package from Starr Hill Brewery as I just know that a good time is CANtained therein. This box was designed with The CANQuest (tm) in mind with four (4) different CANs for my drinking pleasure.

From the CAN: "A German-style hefeweizen with a fruity aroma and spicy finish."

A Hefeweizen in/from a CAN CAN only mean one thing - an inverted Glug following the Crack! I have had Krystalweizens before, but they (un)clearly want me to exbeerience the esters. I Love the onrush of the head as it steadily climbs up the glass, stopping at the lip to pause, exhale and slowly fall away. I got two fingers of foamy, soapy, tawny head with modest retention for my efforts. Color was a cloudy Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 -5). Nose was my kind of Hefe! Lots of clove & only a mild banana/bubblegum presence. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, big for the style. The taste was very spicy, very much of clove & this is the sort of thing that I CANnot find often enough. I am told that the clove esters develop when the beer is lager-temperature fermented, which many (most) brewers to not have the time, patience, capacity (some CANbination thereof) to perform. More's the pity. Even so, hefeweizens remain not my thing, so catering to me will not keep yinz in business. Finish was dry & spicy, which is what I prefer, but even then, one was satiating. Clove Life Savers are long gone, but do they still make Clove chewing gum?

Bottle to pint. Yellow color. A little hazy. Small white head. Aroma is egg, wheat, some fruitiness. Taste is Bready, but thin. Very Mild hops. Paste. Medium carbonation. Not great, but ok for a plain wheat beer.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Yellow with a thin white head.

Smell: Cloves, wheat, and citrus.

Mouthfeel/Taste: Smooth light bodied. Taste of cloves and wheat with a slight bitter and citrus after taste.

Overall: Good Hefenweizen. I would have this one again.

Whoa whoa whoa, nothing about this beer says "hefeweizen", yo. Looks and tastes like a fruity pale ale (you know, 'cause there's nothing cloudy, bananay or clovey about it). That said, it isn't a bad beer, just an awful example of the style.

Starr Hill Brewery "The Love"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "PKG ON 01/11/17" and sampled on 02/21/17
$2 @ Wegmans, Collegeville, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: Wow, a Bavarian-style hefe, I was expecting an American wheat. Nice appearance. Very hazy yellow-gold body beneath a fluffy head of white. Head retention and lacing seem good. Aroma of banana, clove, and plastic-like phenols. The flavor offers more fruit... perhaps red berries, as well as wheat and a hint of acidity. There's a bit of a floral character to it, as well as some mild grassy and spicy hops. Medium-light in body. Median carbonation that softens. Moderate bitterness that along with the slight tartness brings it to a dry finish. Overall pretty nice. It's better than some of the Bavarian hefeweizens that I've had in Germany, although I could do with less plastic-like phenols. Looking now, the lacing could certainly be better as well, and I guess the carbonation for that matter, although they've clearly opted to the take the easy road on that one, which is OK by me in the end. I always have a hefeweizen on hand in my house, and I'd buy this if the price was right. It's not the best but it'd do.

Poured from a bottle into a weizen glass.

Overall: A good brew. An enjoyable and refreshing wheat beer, but it lacks a few characteristics of most true German hefeweizens I've had. Probably not the most representative of the style's quirks.

Look: Golden yellow, white sudsy head, dissipated completely.
Smell: a light aroma, some classic hefeweizen funk with a touch of ground coriander root. Not much of the banana or clove that I expected.
Taste: At first, almost nothing wafting up through the palate. Then a hit of bublegum, banana bread, and light spiciness, followed by a malty roasted finish. Maybe the first finish like that I've had for a hefe.
Feel: Light to medium in body, fairly carbonated.
