I've been to 4 of the stores in the Houston area (Smith's street, Kingwood, and the other one on Westheimer heading East, on the other side of the 8) so far, and this one ranks second in selection. I liked the layout of the store, too. The beer is off to the right, feels sort of like it's tucked away into it's own large corner with plenty of shelf space and room to move around. Definitely would recommend it if you live near it or are visiting near it.

This is a great place on the west side of town to get good beer. This place has a huge selection of high quality imports and craft beers. The beer selection is off to the right as you walk in the store. The place is always stocked with the local Saint Arnolds, Real Ale, and plenty of Southern Star is well displayed. Lots of Belgian beers. De Froef is plentiful which is one of the only places outside of downtown to have it. Another one of my favorites is Fullers 1845. I was really impressed with the selection here. I just moved from Kingwood were the selection at the local Spec's is way below average to a couple of miles down the road from this one. This is a great upgrade. One of the best Spec's I have been to outside of downtown.
About the only thing to complain about is the service. I can't say it is bad. Typical Specs, but I have never seen the beer manager to ask him what is coming in, and I have never been asked if I needed any help. Usually I am in good with the beer guy so I know what they got coming in. Though he/she seems to be nonexistent. I am sure the manger is good. Otherwise the place would not have such a great selection. Though I find it odd that I have never seen the manager. Other than that one of the best places I have seen to get beer in Houston.

Can't believe I have been going to this store so long and haven't reviewed it.
This Spec's location, IMO, is much better than the main downtown location. Mostly because:
-it is easier to get to
-there aren't two dozen people at any given time rushing down your aisle
-the selection is just as good (if not better) as the downtown, and the downtown location always sells out of beers too quickly, whereas at this store has the hard-to-find beers for far longer
-Dan the beer manager is great - he listens to you if you tell him about a particular beer that you want, and he will do his best to get it for you. He keeps as much craft beer as he can in stock, and will ride the distributors if they are not getting the best selection to the store.
I really love this Spec's. Been going there for several years now and get the shakes thinking about having to go somewhere else for my craft beer.

This Spec's is in front of my neighborhood and is pretty much the only location that I go to. Like most Spec's, its basically a one-stop-party-shop. Snacks, hors d'oeuvres, cheeses, coffees... whether you're having a small intimate gathering or a large party, it has everything that you'll need.
In addition to the very large wine and liquor sections, it has an excellent beer selection, easily equalling the main warehouse location. Perhaps there are fewer beer drinkers in my area, but they always seem to have those hard to find beers, even after most other locations have long sold out. The beer manager also often holds extra cases in the back of limited quantity items, so always ask for something that you can't find on the shelf.

This is one of the best Spec's I've been to. Looks to be located in what used to be an old department store. Because of that, it has a very interesting layout with many smaller aisles than found in other Spec's locations. Also, the lighting is dimmer and gives less of a hospital/supermarket feel.
As far as the beer goes, they have one of the best selections I've seen in Houston (barring the downtown location). The cold beer section was decent, but the room temperature selection was great. A full aisle of imports, and a full aisle of American craft beers.
Another bonus to this location: when I was in Houston a month or so ago, this was the only Spec's I found that had both the Lindemans Gueuze and the Cuvee Renee.
Had a couple of guys in the beer section go looking in the back for stuff I had quesitons about. I was pleased by that.
Along with solid service, and the selection, this is a great location. Not too far from a Half Price Books and a Raising Cane's.
