I did not know what I had til I was gone. I went to school at Miami, and would go to this place once-twice a semester to eat. It was always good but I was in college and did not fully appreciate it. Since graduating, I have not found a better German restaurant and I live in Columbus (German Village) and grew up in Cincinnati (Oktoberfest). I recently went back to visit Miami and the first stop was Steinkellers and it was still great. The beers are all (well not all, but the ones we care about, they do offer BMC, but it is a college town) German and are rotated throughout the year. A big stein of lager is the best way to return to the college lifestyle. The food is authentic German, from wienerschnitzel, sauerkraut, sausage, spatzle; they have it all and it is great. The atmosphere, oh the atmosphere, it is in a basement, no sunlight, no cell phone service; just wooden booths, stained glass, and the smell of beer and food. This is the best restaurant in Oxford, and if you are in the know there is a side door that leads to another bar.

Steinkeller is a little slice of Germany tucked away underground in Oxford. Steins features 20 taps, almost all of which are imported directly from Germany. They also tend to have one or two craft offerings such as Bell's. and they also usually have 3-4 BMC brews. The atmosphere is fun, often with live music, and sometimes an authentic oompah band. Waiters are attentive and the bartenders are quick. The food is very good authentic German. My only negative for this place is that it can be a little pricey, depending on what you eat/drink.

Steinkeller has a good selection of mostly German lager beers. They have some other imports (Guinness) for other that don't particularly like the lagers. They rage from a lager style ale (Kolsch), to Helles, to Oktoberfests, to Bocks, to Hefe-Weizen, to Pils, to Dunkels. Personally, I don't really like the lagers, but I will drink a Pils or Kolsch or Dobbelbock. They carry 20 beer total including PBR and Bud Light.

There food choice is also impressive, but being a veggie only, it limits my choices.

The best part of Steinkeller is the 20 beers on tap. An impressive selection of German brews, and not just your typical ones, but a nice selection of all different styles of German beers. Also some other beer from other countries.

The atmosphere is good, a bit fake, but they do their besat to recreate a German underground beer hall.

Another plus is that they serve beer in Liter or 1/2 liter Krugs, and you can occasionally get it served to you in a 2 liter boot, as long as you are getting a Spaten product.

The food is pretty good too, goes along well with the beers they have.

A good alternative to Oxford's shitty bars.

Steinkeller in Oxford Ohio is a favorite among many of the students and townies who want to have a choice between several good brews. There is a large selection of beers on tap (mostly german) including several Spaten beers (Optimator, Oktoberfest, Mai bock, M√ľnchner Hell, and Dunkel Lager). You also can't go wrong with the Erdinger Hefe-Weizen and Oktoberfest Hefe-Weizen. Of course if you just want that German bier hall atmosphere without the expensive price (steins are typically around 8 to 9$ for the german beers 32oz) you can always get a stein of Pabst Blue Ribbon for about 4$ (PBR and Budlight are the only two american brews you can get on tap). Good authentic German food, the pretzels are fantastic! And for those who don't quite have a German palate, they make a pretty good cheeseburger too.

Overall a nice German bier hall style place located two floors under ground (note the name steinkeller translated-stone cellar) in the heart of Oxford Ohio.

Das Steinkeller is a welcome respite from the generic college bars that populate the rest of High Street. It was the go-to pub of my group of friends in college. Steinkeller has a wide selection of German beers on tap: Spaten (to the previous reviewer, as of 2008, Optimator is now available) Franzisakaner, Erdinger, Paulaner, etc., as well as a solid selection of seasonals (Spaten Maibock, various Oktoberfests). The food is great, I highly recommend the fried pickles, the schnitzel, and the potato pancakes.

Atmosphere is a mixed bag. It's a favorite among Miami students who have studied abroad, and other conscientious objectors to Nati Light, so it's often absurdly crowded Thurs-Sat during the school year. You'll have to decide how you personally feel about that. It makes for a wonderful, spirited atmosphere, just make sure you're there before 9:30 so you have a chance or scoring a table. I also recommend trying it during the week or during a school break for a much quieter experience, during which you can pick the brains of their knowledgeable staff. Overall, a great place, one which I'm careful to revisit each time I come back to town.
