Appearance: Crystal clear. white head. moderate lacing.

Smell: Noble german hops. Wonderful aroma. Perfect to Style

Taste: Bland. lacking on hop flavor. watered down flavor. No decocted malt backbone, nor a notable noble hop presence.

Mouthfeel: Nothing stands out.

Overall: Need to retry this one fresh. I may have a dated example that has aged poorly.

On 14th Jan 2012 I decided to have a lager/pilsner/helles/light beer evening: a 500ml bottle of this beer was the first I opened. Poured into three tall thin Kolsch glasses it looked just like I remembered it when I visited the brewery back in the last century.

Golden body, clear, clean and on top a snow white covering of small bubbles: a typical Kolsch in appearance.

The aroma is weak, or understated if being kind, some hop hints and a cereal whiff maybe: otherwise nothing, it gets my usual score of three for a non-smelling lager/pilsner/helles, etc, etc.

The taste is crisp and refreshing, difficult to pinpoint flavours but there is a hop element that gives it a sharp tang towards the end of each sip and some malt presence that ensures the hops don’t take over completely.

Well balanced and easy to drink, a good start to the evening.

A very clear, golden beer with a thin head.

Smell is pilsner-like, very light and light hoppy.

Taste of pilsner malt, light sulfuric and a touch of husk. A light bitter is balancing the very light body and hop aroma is absent. Very little depth, a pretty dull beer.

500ml bottle bought from GapWines, Belfast

Poured a crystal clear light golden yellow colour... White head poured quite thick and faded to thin layer... no real lacing...

Aroma - Light caramel malts, creamy vanilla, lemony notes, slight biscuity hints, juicy fruits, light peppery hop notes...

Taste – Juicy fruits (lemons, light grapefruit hints), light malts, some faint sugary sweetness, saltiness, light hop bitterness...

Feel - Quite smooth. Light body.... very drinkable...

Overall - A OK Kolsch.... very drinkable. Worth a try...

50cl bottle, served in a 20cl kolsch stange

A- Apple juice gold, 3 finger head which is creamy and has good retention and lacing.

S- Yeasty, faint biscuity malts,

T- Light bready malts, but very faint taste overall

M- Watery, moderate carbonation.

D- Pretty flavourless kolsch, doesnt stand up against the likes of pfaffen or paffgen.

500ml bottle, poured into a pint glass

Pours with lemony yellow body, thin whispy off white head forms. Retention is pretty poor, I'm just left with a few whisps of lacing, no sign of a solid head.

Smell, slightly skunked character, faint freshly cut grass, tiny sulphurous aroma floating around. Dull and lifeless malt, a touch of sweetness

Taste, metallic and slightly sulphurous once again. Some slight hop bitterness backed up by a sweet malt character. Freshly cut grass, blood like metallic on the finish

Poor all around. It may have been a bad bottle but its generally very dull, disappointing and full of off flavours

Palest white straw with tower of loose white foam that craters. Almond cookie and lemon balm nose. Lemon curd on tablewater cracker malts, slight nuttiness in the middle. with coriander and grass hops. Floral nectar finish and tingly linger. Light, crisp, fizzy, nearly creamy but not cloying.

Good Kolsch - distinctly hits the malt, hops, and lightness notes for good balance. Much more going on than Fruh.

I had this beer for over more than five months in my fridge and tonight the time to open the bottle. Best before 02-28-11, that means that this beer is over date now. Ah well, lets try it anyway...

Poured in my Struise glass the beer looks quit nice with a white head and a pilsener yellow fluid. Some carbonation. The head disappears after a short while leaving a small ring the glass.

This is certainly not a bad beer in this style. Fresh smell of the beer but not possible to get some aroma's in the nose.

In spite of the 'age' of this beer not bad at all.

So fellows Koelsch - the original lagered ale from Koeln:

A - strawblond, clear and decent head

S - Hops some malt cut grass

T - I taste different hops not too bitter and some malt definitely not sweet but no spice, fruit, excitement - a bit like Pils meets IPA

M - Refreshing good carbonation no aftertaste pretty damn good

D - I drank this quite fast

Beer bottle (50cl.), tasted in 2002.

Appearance : golden color
Smell : floral aromas.
Taste & Mouthfeel : fragrant and slightly sweet.
Drinkability : A Good Beer. The Kolschbier, beer typical of the region of Cologne, like a lager style pilsener but his bitterness is less pronounced.

Review translated from french 6-19-2008.

Pours to a pale yellow with a thin quickly vanishing head. Aroma is mostly wheaty malts with a little bit of grass and hops in the mix. Taste is the same - the sweetness predominates with the bitterness of the hops only slightly showing through. Notes of grass and cereal plus a little skunk are present. Finishing is clean with almost a sugary aftertaste.

Catch up rating from notes, 2011: Bottle picked while travelling through Koln. Another of the standard kolsch lagers, pale golden with foamy head, bready, biscuity, malty goodness with a nice hops bite at the finish. Not outstanding, but solid all around.

A: Pours pale golden with slow small bubbles. The light white head is tall and sinks slowly into rather nice lacings.

S: Crisp! Dry malt together with bitter hops. Some citric notes. Clean!

T: Crisp mix between noble hops and rich but also well balanced malt. Citric notes. Not much else is going on - but why mend what's not broken?

M: Light body with rich carbonation - smooth, though. Aftertaste lingers with dry bitterness.

O: Nice and crisp.

This is a fairly decent beer. Nothing offensive in the taste; however, nothing particularly exciting. This is a benign drinkable brew with not too much going on. The aftertaste has some nice flavors, but it lacks any character while you initially sip. It is fairly pleasant despite this. As I drink it, the presence of the flavor becomes more obvious. Might buy this again to drink ice cold in the sun. For something not really exciting, it is very endearing. I recommend trying it.

.5L, Germany

Poured a sparkling, clear yellow-gold with a good head, though it dissipated quickly. Above-average lacing.

Aroma is faintly of earthy hops. Clean, but not much there.

More bitter than most Kölsch, with some good hop flavor-- earthy and lightly lemony. Cracker-like, grainy malts are present, but the finish is mainly bitter. Could be cleaner, though still a good Kölsch. I liked the lively, effervescent mouthfeel and easy-drinking light body.

A completely drinkable Kölsch, though not among the elite.

Pours a bright yellow color with a medium sized, froth head.

Has a refreshing herbal hop character with some underlying straw and sweetened grain to it.

Offers a perfect nuanced, lively carbonation with a light body to it, which drinks darn easy with a nice hop crispness atop of its white bread malts defined flavors.

Strawy, malty beginning with toffee and leafy hops defining the taste, refined by the beers higher, yet soft carbonation. Finishes sweeter, while providing a nice and light late hoppiness.

Nice Kölsch, way more flavorful than its industrial brewed cousins.
