Clear brown hue, dark fruit nose, sweet sultanas, dates, slightly rough upfront, caramel, toffee in the middle, strong tasting, slight bitter aftertaste, full bodied dark beer.

Typical english ale, similar style and feel to other Shepard Neame beers. Would be best enjoyed on a cold pommy day served slightly chilled to bring out the flavour of the beer.

Nose without mistakes, reminding of Trappist beers... But cannot keep the promise when you start drinking. Somehow to thin and not enough structured body. It`s puffing out fastly and leaves a feeling of bad halitosis...

Hard pour from the bottle into a straight pint glass produces a tall, frothy, creamy head that promises more than the beer eventually delivered. Colour is a clear dark amber or honey, with light carbonation.

Smell and taste essentially treacle toffee with some bitterness in the aftertaste. The taste opens up and the bitterness recedes somewhat as the beer warms. It's not unpleasant, but one-dimensional. The 5.4% alcohol doesn't announce itself in the taste, but there's enough to make one aware in due course that this is beer.

Overall: nothing special, but a safe choice in the absence of anything more inspiring. The second pint is probably better than the first.

Looks very docile in the bottle. Pours a a nice, clear, dark amber color with a nice frothy white head which disapates somewhat quickly. While I did not get te same smell noted in other reviews, it was not overly very impressive and inviting as other beers. Very dry taste with a hint of chocolate. Overall, a mild bitter worth a taste, but not much more. I must admit, the name of the beer is more intriguing than the beer itself. I just hope it was not a Catholic Bishop.

Tried this one for the first time in a couple of years.

Overall a nice english ale (or esb/premium bitter/strong ale to be, eh, precise). Lovely smell: toffee, dried fruits, butter; light floral hops; and some mineral note I cant really nail down. Taste is basically along the same lines. To conclude - tired of modern style pale ales or even ipa? - try this. Lots of flavors, but in another way.

My absolute favorite! I used to buy the Bishop for $5.00 a pint when I lived in Japan. Can't seem to find it here in the US though :(
