Magnificently black , soft and smooth
Just a tad more chocolate or coffee hints and it would be heavenly bliss

Bought at a Supermarket in olomouc (Moravia, Czech Republic). Half liter bottle poured into Pint glass.

-Pitch black opaque colour. Stained black foam that leaves traces.
-Deep fresh coffee-chocolate smell. Toffee. Smoky to some extent.
-Coffee taste. Rough. Old hazelnut.
-Crispy. Carbonation can be felt. Dry

I don't particularly like the style.

Sample from bottle at Copenhagen Beer Festival 2013. Served too cold. Black colour, moderate beige head. Moderate roasty aroma, notes of cold coffee, unsweetened cocoa and wood. Very dry roasty flavour, coffee notes. Some hops in the finish. Not very complex, but nice enough to drink.

De Cervezasdiferentes. En copa de pinta inglesa de Ikea. Estudiando. Rico perfil tostado y cafetoso muy inglés y muy bebible, con un buen cuerpo pese a su baja graduacion. Se echa en falta más de esto.

500 ml bottle, couldn't find a date on it. Poured into a tulip.
Look: Pours a pretty solid black which lets the barest light through when held up to the light. Had about 1.5 cm of tightly bubbled off-white head which lingers for some time, leaves some nice lacing down the side. Looks good.
Smell: roasty on the nose straight up chocolate and coffee, I'm getting a little bit of soy sauce and vegemite towards the end, there is something green on the nose as well.
Taste: roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate. A little green on the bitterness, but I don't mind it.
Feel: Mid bodied for a stout, tingly carbonation near the front of the mouth. Bitterness is strangely a little aggressive and astringent, this doesn't last for too long. A decent length though.
Overall: I think the green character I'm getting from it stops it being great, but its still pretty good.

Bottle.

Red-tinged black, moderate lace.

Aroma centers on strong smell of dark chocolate (indicating black malt), with a little bit of caramel and coffee hanging at the back.

Taste is very dry, dissolving quickly the association to sweetness from the chocolate in the aroma. It actually feels too thin and dry, leaving a gaping hole in the middle of the taste. Chocolate has been replaced by somewhat burned coffee, presumably from chocolate malt. Espresso notes at the tail, so.. brown malt? Maybe caramel malt in the onset. Oak is very prominent at the end and keeps extending in a sustained tannic note and flavour.

Mouthfeel is smooth but watery.

Overall, too many roasted malts and not in balance. Oak is nice and unusual, but it would need a longer aftertaste and a fuller body. Now it is left hanging in the air. The 1868 recipe is interesting for having so many malts, esp. roasted kind but I myself would have substituted munich malt for brown, at least partially. The beer would have benefited.

A- Love the basic old school look of the bottle and labeling....from Britains' oldest brewer! The brew itself pours a root beer color and has some clarity to it, however of course, it becomes opaque once in the glass. The head is a wonderful light caramel/toffee color, starts out around two fingers thick and settles softly into a cloud like puff weighing down on the liquid! The carbonation looks to be aggressive and finely bubbled, while the lacing is thick and creamy, with plenty of mountain range-esque foam clinging to the side of the glass....well above average overall!

S- Smooth dark chocolate and black coffee are the primary aromas found here, with soft toasty chocolate and black malts providing a dry astringent background smell. I also sense biscuit nuances along with some burnt nuttiness and toffee/caramel sweetness. The finish is robust and lingers on the nostrils in a rounded manner!

T- Heavily charred malts that provide a solid bitter backbone is duly noted, along with bittersweet chocolate, pure cocoa powder, brisk French press black coffee, some sort of spicy alcoholic tinge, some burnt almond and/or nuts, and even at the finish, there is subtle woody oak astringency. Hop presence is also present, providing a lingering flavor that is strangely refreshing and makes my mouth water.

M/O- Medium-full mouthfeel, with robust full flavors that lean very much to the traditional dry Stout variety. The carbonation is tight, yet plentiful, really allowing the overall character to shine through! Very drinkable and as it warms up, it only gets better....a fine Stout from a fine brewery!
