Poured on-tap and served in a true pint, the beer is a dark brown to black coloring with a tan, low profile, foamy head. Good cling as you drink. The nose is smokey and roasted with a coffee backbone and meaty characteristics. Roasted and watered down coffee flavors with a sweet, dry backbone. The aftertaste is bitter coffee and dark chocolate. Dry, quick finish. This beer is easy to drink and supersmooth, but the flavor lacks a bit.

A: Dark and nearly pitch black but with a deep dark red tinge to it. Bubbly light brown to ivory coloured blanket. Some minimal lacing.

S: Molasses-like roasted malts, bitter dark chocolate, some coffee, and a bit of nutty taste.

T: Not that malty, with more emphasis on bitter dark chocolate and a fair amount of nicely roasted dark coffee. Nice flavours considering the ABV (states 4.6% on whiteboard).

M: Rather thin, even considering the ABV, could be a bit richer and more robust. Average carbonation.

D: I like this, even despite the lighter mouthfeel. Certainly drinkable and sessionable considering the flavours in relation to the ABV.

Benelux Marge Stout….on tap at the Brewpub

Appearance-came to be in a normal pint glass, dark brown with the Nitro tap glazed creamy head on top. Impressive looking beer, looks as good as many stouts do when they are poured.

Smell-thin roasted malt character, slight wafts of coffee and nuts, a little bit of caramel.

Taste/Mouthfeel-medium mouthfeel, more touches of coffee but largely a balanced malt flavor, touch of chocolate on the way down. Smooth but retains the syrupy nitro character I dislike on most stouts through that tap.

Overall- a fine stout, could be a stronger and fuller beer though, still I did enjoy the flavors.

from notes taken on vacation in montreal, may 14, 2010.

on tap - served in an imperial pint glass.

color is a standard dark brown with no head, just a few bubbles. got a few legs, but no real lace to speak of.

smell is some roast and herbal hops. taste follows nose with some roast, a little dark chocolate and hints of herbal hop bitterness in the finish.

thin and watery with very little co2.

easily drinkable and definitely a session beer, but pretty boring as far as stouts go.

Poured a deep black hue with a one finger creamy tan head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured a slight burnt grain and a light caramel sweetness.

The taste consisted of sweet chocolate, dry coffee, burnt grain and a touch of caramel malt.

The mouthfeel was of average fullness for the style.

Overall a tasty stout that could be a bit more robust.

Tried this one out as a taster. It looked like a thing of beauty, nice tan head, opaque, carbonation the whole time. Great roasted maltiness. Wouldn't picked this as a pint if I could just drink one, but would go well with some after dinner chocolate.

A - Very black beer with lots of nice nitro tan head.
S - Dark roasted malts, coffee and unsweetened chocolate. Not strong smell, as it was served too cold, I believe.
T - Lots of coffee flavours and heavy malts. Quite bitter from the espresso quality. Only the slightest bit sweet and chocolatey. Quite earthy and muddy tasting.
M - Very smooth, creamy and thick. It lingers and dries the mouth quite nicely. Just how I like my stouts.
D - Pretty decent. I've been known to have several of these on nights where it's on special, but a thick stout is not all that easy to drink.

Nitro-tap at the brewpub. Black coffee, chocolate aroma. Malty. Soft texture on tongue, and not too bitter. Roasted barley taste and and coffee, coffee ground texture. This still could be thicker and tastier.Maybe not nitro tap would leave in more taste.
