Cask at "Soirée des Grands Crus" Microbrasserie du Siboire, Sherbrooke (QC), Candada. 5.9% ABV.

A - Pours a black color with copper hues on the side of the glass. The head is limited to a ring at the surface.

S - Light malty and roasted notes upfront which disappear quickly to reveal a strong hoppiness (medicinal, citrusy and grassy).

T - Taste is pretty similar to the smell. The hop flavours are rich and complex but the malt is too discrete in my opinion.

M - Good mouthfeel, very smooth with a low carbonation as expected from a cask. Medium bodied, in my opinion this beer would benefit from being a bit heavier.

O – A good Black IPA which features a stong hop character and an excellent drinkability. Perhaps a higher maltiness would be interesting to get a better balance.

Serving: On tap

A:
Pours pitch black with a small, creamy brown head that settles to a skiff and a ring around the glass. Ok retention; rings of lacing. (3.75)

S:
Fruity with some dark malt aromas. Coffee, citrus rind, pine, somewhat medicinal. (3.75)

T:
Chocolate with some tropical bitterness. Lots of creamy milk chocolate with some resinous hops, licorice, coffee, and roastiness. (4)

M:
Nice prickly carbonation with small bubbles, very drinkable, light-medium body with a lingering bitterness that is pretty easy on the palate. (4)

O:
Good ABA as far as I am concerned.
This is a stout-tasting, pretty hoppy beer that manages to not be as intense as I sometimes find Black IPAs to be. In some ways this might not be preferable, but I find it to be a nice change of pace since there is plenty of hop and malt bitterness, but nothing over the top and little to no palate fatigue. That said, it could possibly improve by featuring more of the citrusy hops in the taste, but then it might be less drinkable from competing flavors.
Very solid, would have again. The ABA for people who don't necessarily like ABAs. (3.75)

On tap at the brewery. Identified as Strato Black IPA 6%

A- Beer looked good, poured a nice black with a quick to dessipate head. Leaving some lacing.

S- Notes of roasted malts and some floral hops but nothing close to your average black ipa's.

T- Roasted malts again, Very faint hint of coco. Hardly any hop taste to it.

If this is a black ipa, it's not what it should be. Off the style and i regret getting this.

If this is simply a stout then it's also very ordinary. I can enjoy a good stout and i love black ipa's but this isn't it.

Try it for yourselves and see.

Festival Bières et Saveurs 2009. This brewery rotates 50 recipes so I was happy to get the basics. A very decent stout, medium mouthfeel, a tad sour, with chocolate up front. Black without significant head. Roasty, and chocolate, aroma. Hops are right there. As good as any stout in Quebec.
