Style: American Brown Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.20%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
This imperial brown ale an obscene amount of seven different types of malt give our imperial brown ale an earthy, caramel aroma and flavor with just a touch of sweetness and a medium-dry finish. The beer is big and bold, and not for the faint of heart!

The reports of this beer being retired are greatly exaggerated. I just bought it and it's real good.

poured 12oz bottle into snifter.

A - Dark brown cola colored with a 1.5 finger tan head. Fades into a thin ring and leaves behind spotty lacing.

S - Sweet and roasty malts. Caramel with some nuttiness. Not a huge aroma in the glass.

T - Much bigger flavor that the initial nose would indicate. Plenty of big sweet malts with some earthy notes. The roasted flavor yields to some caramel, toffee, and sugar coated almonds.

M - Medium body with ample carbonation. It is pretty smooth with an almost cola like finish.

O - One of the best brown ales I have had that wasn't placed into a barrel or had adjuncts added to it.

Appearance: Pours a dark, chocolate brown with a thin finger of foam that quickly recedes. Not much noticeable lacing.

Smell: Possesses a huge, malt-forward nose. Biscuit and chocolate practically leap out of the glass.

Taste: Seems to primarily boast a charred chocolate flavor, of sorts. The biscuity-malt flavor is readily apparent as well, but there's actually very little sweetness. A pleasant bitterness lingers on the tongue.

Mouthfeel: Very dry throughout, and possessed of just enough carbonation to be noticed. Not a beer you'll slam down, but certainly one that's enjoyable to drink.

Overall: Ale Asylum marketed this as a beer absolutely bursting with malts, and it doesn't disappoint. They dominate every aspect of this brew yet don't seem to ever go rampaging out of control A must-try for any fan of malty beers.

A bit too syrupy and heavy, without sufficient roast or bitterness to balance it out. Solid chestnut flavor, turbinado sugar (or maybe panela - something unrefined), almost a rum note with the boozy sweetness. Best for cool nights.
