Got this from my brothers trip to Madison this superbowl weekend.

Poured into a Spotted Cow pint glass. Pours a somewhat clear deep amber color.

Smell is somewhat strange for the style but still nice. You get a lot more citrus then I expected. Sweet Malt. Caramel.

Taste is nice, sweet caramal, toffee, nice malts. Also a suprising hop bite that really works right. A nice Citrus presence.

Mouthfeel is sticky and full.

A very nice and different take on a scotch ale. I do not know if you can get it outside of madison. I know that they have a few offerings of their stuff in La Crosse. I wish they would have this here aswell!!!

A- The dense glowing brown body has a lumpy, bubbly tan head that sticks to the glass a bit.

S- The fruity note leads to light toasted malt notes in the finish.

T- The fruity quality leads to a malt flavor that has notes of dry toasted biscuit malt and perhaps some ester notes that might be a slight stale quality. The finish has a slight clove spice to it with a pungent hop hint that lingers.

M- This beer has a medium-light mouthfeel with a bit of a flat texture on the tongue and no alcohol heat.

O- The odd fruity flavors and the lack of luscious malt makes this a bit drab and lifeless.

12oz bottle, expiration date of 3/18/17. Pours light transparent amber with a below average sized off-white head; some lacing. Smells of sweet/roasted malt, earthy hops, peat, and caramel. The taste follows exactly with bright hops, caramel, sweet/roasted malt, and peat. Light sweetness and bitterness with a hint of dryness. Average body and carbonation. Overall, a very well-rounded Scotch Ale with some added earthy notes.

Nose: malt spice, bread, a hint of molasses
Pours slightly hazy deep garnet amber with a 1/2" foam collar that slowly dissipates producing intricate lacing.
Palate: Sweet malt flavors with dark sugars somewhere between dark caramel and molasses, fresh bread crust, a hint of plum.
Medium full body, medium low carbonation.

Deep muddled amber-brown, with scarlet glints. The head is beige and short, but, of course, sticky.
A strong maltiness assaults the nose, full of caramel, nougat, black cherry, and pineapple. Hops add a surprising amount, and even more surprising are congruent with candied orange, black tea, and dried pine bark. Alcohol come forward on deeper inhalations with a sense of spiced rum.
Enters into the mouth with a sweet caramel and brown sugar bath. It binds to the teeth, but never cloys up as a procession of fruit arrive next, all still covered in sugar and caramel. Grilled pineapple, pear, blood oranges, and cherries. Turns a bit nuttier in the middle with almonds and walnuts. Hops enter and add citric pith and pinesap flavors, and a lingering herbal bitterness. Alcohol is well hidden with only trace rummy or vinic traits (I've seen it listed between 7.5-8%), and comes out more as a tickle than a punch.
Medium-full through the mouth, with an inherent stickiness offset with enough carbonation to cut through and propel additional swigs.
I really like this. The Scotch tag is a bit of a bug-a-boo, as this seems much more of a big, malty amber ale (as opposed to their big, hoppy Ambergeddon) than anything truly Scottish in origin. No smoke, no deep earthiness, in fact, it's almost brighter than it is dank. But I'll give it leeway, because it deserves it.

On tap at the brewery.OK for the style, which I rarely like in any case. Mild scotch flavour,mostly a caramel malt experience, with some brown sugar, a little sugary plum fruit. boozy. Brown colour and a bit of lace. Well carbonated, served at the right temperature.

Hazy chestnut body. Seemingly unfiltered. Thin head of creamy white. The nose is malty with some almost-scorched brown sugar, generic fruitiness (but with a citrus edge), and grassy hops. The flavor is solid, expressing caramelish malt, some yeasty fruitiness, and a spritz of alcohol. It has a median bitterness, and it finishes drying but not sweet, with lingering somewhat-citrusy fruit and mild grassy hops.

consumed in the dungeon, while reading

appearance: served in an unmarked chalice - really a nice looking beverage...murky cola-amber-mahogany body, creamy beige lace with nice retention

smell: very earthy - nutty. sweet caramel, toffee, and light hints of alcohol

taste: an enjoyable scotch - alcohol is a little warm for only being 7.2% but i'm fine with that. there is a nice buttery toffee flavor with a very earthy/nutty finish.

mouthfeel: alcohol is a little warm, finishes a little flat

drinkability: pretty nice

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a hazy deeper amber (plenty of yeast floaties can be seen), with 2 rigid fingers of light caramel colored foamy head. Both the retention and lacing maintain a rich and frothy look to it during the duration of the glass. The aroma is has a big nose of spice and bready malts on it, mixing with citrus character (I'm getting maybe a touch of some darker fruit as well) and a leafy floral feel. This was very fresh and pleasant in the nose for a Scotch Ale.

The taste has a bit of sugar cookie thing going on with it, with plenty of bread & toffee mixing with tangy citrus and a surprisingly strong dose of earthy and spicy bitterness, which stretches past the finish for a dry feel and a tiny bit of leftover sweetness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a fuller creamy feel in the mouth. Despite some heft here, the bigger ABV is well hidden.

Not usually my favorite style, this Scotch Ale kicked things up with a rather assertive hop profile that really freshened this up nicely. A bit unique and quite tasty, I dug it.

12oz bottle in Sam Adams glass
(no date but I got this last August before the Great Taste in Madison so at least 6 months)

A: Pours a dark caramel color with a thin off-white head. It is hazy with what appears to be some yeast suspended like it was bottle conditioned.
S: On the sweet side, caramel, a little diacetyl, a little english yeast fruitiness.
T: Caramel, some light fruitiness, a hint of hops. I would like a little more "richness" for the style. No hint of diacetyl in the taste.
M: Low level of carbonation, a little over-attenuated for the style, I would like a little more "chewiness".
D: A nice Scotch ale, but not one of the best. Definitely worth trying. Easy to drink, no hint of alcohol, a solid intro to the style.

Single from Trixie's in Madison. Served in a fluted tulip glass, closest i've got to a thistle glass....

Ruddy copper red, sticky lace, clusters of bubbles around the sides.

Peat! Finally a Scotch Ale with peat-smoked malt. Sweet apple and smoldering hardwoods. Fall leaves and dried plums. Sticky on the lips but not sweet. Dry and woody, light specialty grain breadiness and estery dried fruit notes from the yeast. Very cohesive and balanced, thankfully not too sweet at all. This is really tasty, and I won't pass it up in the future...
