After a few visits out to the first East Side brew-pub in Madison I feel like I have a pretty good impression - enough to give it the full credit it deserves.

First off, the location - far Northeast Side, out by MATC and the airport - not exactly convenient for the majority of BAs in town, but after a good talk with the head brewer, Dean, business is good which is nice to hear.

The Asylum itself occupies the corner lot of an industrial strip building right off highway 51. Nice bright sign clues you in to its presence. An outdoor "bier garten" is enclosed by a tall wooden fence. I would imagine the noise from rush hour might get a little loud. The inside is polished industrial/modern with dark colors, brushed metal bar tops, and lacquered tables. The main bar seats about a dozen and there are probably a dozen other tables seating another 50-75 more. A free pool table sits in the side room closest to the entrance to the brewery itself (a pretty impressive little facility featuring salvaged equipment from breweries like Lagunitas, Bridgeport and the Weeping Radish).

The quality and selection are pretty impressive for such an upstart brewery. 11 beers currently on-tap including Gold Digger Blonde, Hopalicious APA, Ambergeddon, Happy Ending Singel, Diablo Dubbel, Tripel Nova, Madtown Nutbrown, Big Slick Stout, Sticky McDoogle Scotch Ale, Hatha-Weizen and a porter whose new name escapes me with another seasonal, Bamboozleator doppelbock, in coming months. They hope to have 4 of them bottled and on local shelves within a month or so (Gold Digger, Hopalicious, Madtown, Ambergeddon). 11 new beers and not a single stinker. My personal favorites are the tripel, dubbel and Ambgergeddon, a hoppy beast of an amber that is quickly becoming a local favorite. Beers are $4 a pint ($4.50 for tulips of their Belgians). Growlers are available for around $11 plus deposit.

Service is a real strength here as well. Staffed by former employees/brewers of the now-defunct Angelic, they are truly passionate about what they do and will not hesitate to let you sample as many of the beers as you want before choosing a pint and chatting about beer in general.

Food is limited at the moment to build-your-own deli-style sandwiches for $7.25, made from fresh local ingredients. Their website states they're looking into adding appetizers and soups in the near future.

Currently, several of their beers can be found at 30-some bars across Madison including 6 of them at the Angelic.

They've got an admirable if ambitious business model built on being beer-friendly first, energy-efficient second, and good to look at third and so far, I am nothing but impressed with Dean and the boys. With a tasty, well-made, diverse line-up of beers and enthusiastic, customer-first service, these guys will go far. A must-visit if you can make it out to the far East Side.

Struck me as Surly light. A nice big facility but it there's no real sense of character. They have quite a few beers on tap but they become a bit samey. Few stand out as superlative. Definitely a solid place to visit if in Madison but not a destination.

Pretty decent brewery vibe with nice outdoor seating.

Service was ho-hum to start. We sat at dining tables, not the bar, and it took forever to get a first drink and eventually place our order. After that, service was decent.

Selection of both food and beer are ok, with about 8 taps at the time of various styles.

Price was average brewery prices.
