Type: Draft
Glass: 16-oz. pint glass
From: Underbelly in North Park (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $2.75 with Happy Hour ($5.50 regular)
Purchased: July 3, 2015
Consumed: July 3, 2015
Misc.: N/A

Poured an orange, slightly murky color with two fingers of fluffy, white head when I got it. Lots of bubble streams coming up from the bottom of the glass. Very good amount of layered spiderweb foamy lacing on the sides of the glass. Above average retention. A nice looking beer. (Sight - 4.25)

Smelled slight apple, cereal, corn, stale booze, faint vomit, light nuances of peach and apricot. (Smell - 3.75)

Taste follows the nose. Got corn cereal, spoiled fruit, peach, apricot, grass and apple. (Taste - 3.75)

Light body. Oily-to-creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long, grassy finish. (Feel - 3.75)

This was pretty good for the style. I’d have it again for sure. (Overall - 3.75)

On Tap at Port Carlsblad, a good 24 hours recovery from the also-great Solena Beach. Bright yellow Mexico lager. Smells like a taco. Some lace. Bitter and sugary. Sweet aftertaste. You're in California, you need a Mexican token product in the lineup.

Originally reviewed November 23, 2006. A very fresh, bright clean crisp plain malt aroma. Maybe some edges of sugar. Pour of plain gold, with a slick edge of white. Flavor is again fresh and clean sweet malt, with a lot of white grape vinous character and real deal of fresh grainy character. Not slightly skunky, off or unclean. Finishes with a long clean sugar metamorphosis. Best pale lager, no questions.

Pours a clear golden color with no head, just some whispy lace at the top.
There is really not much going on in the aroma. A bit of citrus maybe some lemon but not much of either.
This taste a lot like a wheat beer to me. I don't have a lot of experience with wheat beers, but this reminds me of one. Sharp citrus bite in a very thin flavored beer.
The mouthfeel is watery thin with too much carbonation.
I've never had anything quite like this. It's a struggle to finish the 12oz. Overall this might be a good beer for some, but it's just simply not for my palate. Maybe if I try it in a couple of years I'll love it, but right now I just don't have the palate for it.
Anyways I am thrilled to be reviewing a beer that I would not have the chance to review if not for the efforts of boolshot and Marvz in the Double Trouble BIF.

Amigo, this ain't for me.

This beer looks like your average lager. But it falls off a cliff from here. The smell is too much like a wheat beer for me. The taste is of molded hay. Mouthfeel is repulsive. Drinkability is terrible. I have heard good thing of Pizza Port and I have a couple more bottles from the Double Trouble BIF so surely they will be better. Overall, If you like wheat type beers this mey be a little more drinkable to you. But it is not for me.

On draft at Pizza Port San Clemente, 02/25/08.

Clear, honey-colored brew. Thin skin of foam.

Subtle grassy aroma.

Just as a bit of sweet malt appears on palate, piney hops appear and take over. Unexpected and welcome! Finish is fairly clean with some hop bitterness lingering.

Just a note: this was called Amiga Amber Lager when I was at Pizza Port, and I think that would make it more like a Vienna Lager than an "American macro".

On tap at the pizza port in Carlsbad on a sunny Saturday afternoon. They used a pint glass for this offering and the bartender made a perfect pour. Loose white head that sticks around for a couple minutes. Golden body with medium carbonation.

Clean as a whistle. Ultra refreshing. There is a subtle grain smell and taste but very laid back. The all malt lager "session" from full sail is the only one that can match this offering in my book. This went well with the Margherita pizza and a side salad.

Notes: Perfect starter brew.

Why a great brewery like Pizza Port would make a beer like this is beyond me. Very, very ho hum. Hops did not really match the usual hop flavor or aroma of a pilsner, had a definite California brew pub hop character. Light straw color. Cood carbonation. A basic run of the mill beer that is only suitable for those just venturing into the world of craft brewing.

Had a pint of this to start off at Lost Abbey, the bartender was not impressed.

Pours a clear yellowish gold, on the darker end for the style, nice cap of white foam, drops some decent lacing and retention is good. Smell is clean, light and malty, touch of floral honey, not bad. Taste is similar, nice malt, biscuit, floral and honey, touch of grass in the finish, balanced and goes down easy. Mouthfeel is light bodied with medium carbonation. Very good for the style I think, higher class macro lager with enough going on to make me want another one when its hot. If its good enough to top up Lost Abbey barrels, its good enough for me!

A failry average lager brewed for the less discerning pizza drop-ins to the Port. The pale gloden body is crystal clear and has a small white head with reasonable lacing. The nose is malty without giving any hints of adjuncts. The flavor is basically a light lager without being too sweet or malty, but without any significant hop notes. Decent light feel with a dry finish. Nicely drinkable with pizza.

Light gold color. Small head. Aroma is neutral. A mild "Mexican Lager". Not much flavor. Mild malts and hops. Well balanced and smooth. But, it's OK for a mild flavored beer. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean. Aftertaste is slight bitter.

On tap at Verdugo Bar in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours a murky yellow with a foamy beige head that settles to a film on top of the beer. A foamy curtain of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, and grassy aromas. Taste is much the same with a fruity flavor on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that tastes better than it smells in my opinion.

On-tap at the brewpub: Nice clear pale gold yellow color with a smallish whitish cap of foam sticking around the top. Small bands of strings and some spotty lace stick as its consumed; and consumed quickly.

Aroma is crisp and grainy like that of mushy Cheerio's.

Taste is absolutely wonderful for such a simple lager. Outstanding whole grain taste. Cereal crispness of Cheerio's and Chex with a great wheat grain finish thats never, ever too tangy. It fits right in with a light toasted breadyness as a small dry hopping of a Czech pilsner style fades off the end with amazing grain taste.

Feel is clean, crisp, and bold with a very fine creamy medium body that totally fits the flavors. A perfect beer for just a quick thirst quencher. Hits the spot without a doubt and drinkable without a doubt. Damn fine beer.

Sampled May 2007
Last impressions first, this is a poor example of a Mexican Lager; at least I was expecting something close to water, with overtones of corn, and perhaps even some authentic skunk. This beer did not come close. Instead I found a nicely hoppy beer that had a solid backdrop of clean, cereal grain, malt character. It did hit the crispness of a Mexican Lager, but the crispness was contributed by a solid hop biting bitterness in the finish that is quite atypical of it's namesake beers. The body was also not light and watery enought; it was still light, yet had a nice malty fullness that just kisses the palate enough to let the clean malt character linger on a bit. The hop character leans towards grassy herbal notes, but does seem to have a hint of lemon grass to it as well.

All in all a failure from the cloning of a Mexican Lager aspect. Thank goodness though, because instead we have a nice, easy drinking, hot-weather refresher. I would definitely forgo the recommendation for a lime, this beer has enough malt and hop character to stand on its own two feet.

Sampled on tap at the Carlsbad brewpub.

This lager poured a clear, thin yellow color with minimal white foam that clung to the glass a bit. It was served with a lime wedge. The smell was malty with some bread/biscuit in the aroma. The taste was malty with some bread and a bit of grain. Low hop presence, but there was a touch of hop bitterness. The mouthfeel was smooth and dry with light body and good carbonation. This was a decent and refreshing lager with a fair amount of flavor for a lighter lager.

Pint from Bad Dog Ale House in El Segundo

Pour looked promising with a medium brown head and a thick silky head

Smell was pretty weak, almost like a Coors or Miller to be honest

Tasted like nothing, went down real easy, but nothing to it

Could drink a whole lot of these because of the lightness

Easily my least favorite beer from Pizza Port
