Since my review is the first one for this place, I'm going to take the opportunity to quote the 2006 CAMRA guide because they have a nice little description: "Rambling, many-roomed Georgian pub by the old city Kingsgate. Deluged in bric-a-brac -- it claims to have over 2,000 pewter mugs -- old school desks make convenient, Nelsonia abounds and every square inch of wall and ceiling displays some interesting artefact. It can be busy but service is quick and the clientele always civilised."

Until April 2006, they were a G. Gale & Sons Brewery pub, but since the buy-out by Fuller's, they have now effectively become a Fuller's pub. There are 8 handpumps with the following on tap last time I visited: G. Gale HSB, Butser's Bitter, and Fuller's Discovery, London Pride, and Chiswick Bitter. I had a LP and and HSB, both were absolutely perfect pints in every way. Same experience the last couple of times I visited. Their real ale doesn't go stale because they always have decent turnover. Aside from the real ale, they have the standard keg and bottle stuff, mixed drinks, and a very, very long wine list. Sadly, they no longer have the bottled G. Gale's Old Prize Ale because Fuller's did not continue that line.

This is a great little pub tucked away in a quiet corner of Winchester (sort of south of the Cathedral). The room you enter from the front door is the main pub area. Laying off that to the left is another small area of seating and beyond that a portion of the restaurant's dining room. To the right from the main area is another dining area which also leads out to the sizable back patio which was buzzing with activity on that sunny June evening.

The food is fantastic. In the pub, you can get pub snacks, while in the restaurant, you're faced with a very classy, changing menu of British and Continental CUISINE (i.e.- not just "food" or "grub"). The restaurant has won awards and I can see why. Everything was perfect. Though the cheapest main course was £10.95 and the priciest £18.50, it was worth the price. "Rip-off Britain" was not in effect here.

So, the great thing about this place is that you can go there for a gourmet dinner or you can just chill out with a few pints in a relaxing environment. No loud music or lager-louts.

Incidentally, they also have an adjoining hotel, though it's not cheap.
