Last summer, I had the pleasure of going to Otters Pub on occasion. Every time I was there, they had a wide selection of micros... bottles and on draft. Last week I stopped by for some live music and eats and found that they (more or less) removed all of the quality micros from their stock.

They only offered your standard, average selection. It's a great place to go when the sun is out with the deck that they have upstairs. But if you are planning on coming out to see what they have for selection, prepare to get disappointed.

My first visit, a Tuesday night. A block or two off the main drag in downtown Torrington, upstairs in a somewhat bedraggled building. But once you are in you feel right at home, it seems pretty much a clean establishment. It wasn't busy at 8:30PM so we had front row seats by the taps of which there were about ten including mostly interesting stuff like Flying Dog's Doggie Style Classic Pale Ale, Rogue's Dead Guy Ale, Ayinger's Brau Weisse, even a Lindeman's Pomme Lambic for a change of pace. Although I didn't have time to sample from their bottled goods, the cooler behind the bar looked to contain a very solid variety of fine beers, dozens of non-standards, both US micros and imports. There's an adjoining room with a pool table, a reasonable number of sports tv's throughout, and a small stage for entertainment where we enjoyed an inspired performance from a local blues-rock combo. The barmaid was friendly, very attentive and made us feel right at home immediately. I had one of each of the four beer's named above and they all seemed perfectly fresh, well poured, thoroughly enjoyable visit. I definitely plan to be back. It would be nice to see a larger number of choices on tap, but for this part of Connecticut, believe me, this is a gem of a place. Nothing close to it that I know of between Danbury, Waterbury and the Massachusetts border! Keep it up Otters!

Revisit on 10/10/07:

Was able to stop by in the late afternoon for a brew. Otters has gone through some rennovations and a good job has been done for sure. Most notable (especially for the sports fan) is the addition of 5 flat screen TVs above the bar. One really large plasma (probably 55" or 60" screen) in the middle surrounded by 2 each, 42" and 37" LCDs. 3 were playing HD at the time of my visit. Otters has NFL Sunday Ticket, so this is definitely the premo place to watch the NFL and other sports in Litchfield County.

On to the beer. The drafts running this day were:

Coors Light
Ayinger Oktoberfest (although it had kicked as I ordered--drats)
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale
Miller Light
Paulaner Oktoberfest
Sam Adams Octoberfest
Rogue Dead Guy Ale
Stella Artois
Bass
Guinness Stout

I had the Paulaner (in proper Paulaner glassware) and it was very good. Much superior to this year's bottle version.

Otters also still carries a very good variety of high quality bottled stuff, including a pretty good selection of Rogue and the newest addition, Dellerium Tremens (small bottle for $7).

If you have not checked this place out yet, try to do so when you are next in the Torrington area. You will not be disappointed.

Steve

This one is a really nice respite in otherwise beer poor Torrington. As a resident, I try to get here at least once or twice a week for a couple of beers, usually in the afternoon. Have not had the food yet, but will definitely try soon, based on the word of other patrons. They usually have some nice draught selections, with at least one rotating seasonal brew. Last time I was there a couple of weeks ago, they had Ayinger O'Fest--very tasty and the right temperature to boot. The bottle selection is very broad, but not too many to choose from. Most of the stuff is hi quality, including St. Peter's (organic) Cream Stout-yummy, some Sammie Smith (Oatmeal Stout included), Dragon Stout from Jamaica, and lots of others. Service is always friendly and on point, although most of the bar maids don't know alot about the more esoteric beers (leaving that to beer geeks like me). The atmosphere is very nice, real relaxed and accomodating, with lots of TVs, etc. The owners Bonnie and Scott are real nice people, who have brought this place back from the depths of disrepair and neglect. I hope they flourish, I know they should. I will look to "assist" in their success. I'm lucky to have this place in my own backyard. If you are in the Northwest corner of CT, definitely stop in, you will be glad you did (They are closed on Mondays).

Due to the location and the Torrington street layout, this one might be a bit had to find. Just one hanging sign on a building doesn't offer much of a beacon. Inside the building you have to climb a flight of stairs to get to this second floor pub.

Nicely divided into two rooms. The first one you enter has the bar, a few booths, and a few standard bar distractions (TVs, Jukebox, Video Game). Bar has ten taps, plus a nice three door cooler hiding about 50 selections. Second room has the stage, a few tables, a small open space/dance floor, a few booths, a pool table, pinball machine, and a pair of couches. Nice lighting seems appropriate for each room.

Even on a busy Friday night this place is still small enough that you won't wait long if they are jammed. The staff was quick to provide everything i asked for, including room temperature glassware as opposed to the chilled stuff.

The selection is very nice, and most of the beers they carry are year round selections. They handfull of seasonal beers is up to date. You can find everything from Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout to Lindeman's Framboise Lambic.

Food here is fantastic. They have a sandwich called "The Widower" which made me drool. I suggest you try one for yourself, but only if you have low cholesterol to start. They also have homemade potato chips, which were quite good.

A very good selection, good surroundings, great food, and decent prices make this one a winner. Check them out if you are in the area, or, plan a night with a band playing and take the drive.
