Style: American Dark Wheat Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
This winter wheat beer uses dark malting to provide subtle toasty notes. We then single-hop and dry-hop this beer with Citra hops from our friend Brad’s farm. Interesting pineapple notes from the Citra hop provide a stark contrast to the toasty notes in the body. An engaging and sessionable Winter Seasonal.

A dark amber and orange color, thin 1/5" white head. Aroma was neat, all holiday orange chocolate. Wasn't expecting a mix of citra hop and chocolate and brown malt, it works so nicely with the hops.

Taste was a light bodied yet dark wheat base, interesting take on the beer, they did pretty well. Repacked the caramel crystal malt and cascade hop with some citra and chocolate feels to make a unique and good beer.

Affordably priced too.

Dark, toasty, with a slight pine taste.

Pours a clear dark brown with amber hints at the edges and a minimal khaki colored head; little to no lacing. Aroma is bright and inviting, citrus and pine hops upfront with caramel, toffe, bready, and soft wheat notes. Taste is more malt focused then the aroma; mostly bready with a touch of toffee, very little hop flavor or bitterness. Finishes relatively clean with a fair amount of sweetness. Medium-light body and low-moderate carbonation. Overall this is a pretty good beer, its nothing extraordinary. The aroma was a relatively hoppy but the flavor was very malt focused and one-dimesional.

Serving: Bottle into tulip
Served: 12 December 2015

Appearance: Pours a solid brown with a bit of an off-white or dishwater brown head that sticks around for a while and leaves a bit of lacing, though nothing insane.

Smell: Bright hops with your typically Citra hop qualities- grapefruit, generic citrus, and a pinch of pepper. Smells like an IPA for sure.

Taste: Hmm...this is where the beer loses me. It looks like it's trying to play off a harvest ale and a spiced winter beer at the same time and it just doesn't do it for me- commit to one or the other. The beer is essentially a hopped-up Dunkelweizen, meaning you get some of the wheat beer flavor characteristics- the breadiness from the malt, the slight banana notes from the yeast- and then a reasonably assertive hop not at the end. It isn't as well done as Schnedier und Sohn Hopfenweiße though, for instance.

Mouthfeel: Thinner than expected for a wheat beer, but good carbonation.

Overall: This tastes like a hoppy, dark version of Goose Island 312- the same weaknesses are there: a relatively thin body, poor assertion of wheat flavors. This one includes a funky assertive hoppiness I just can't readily get behind.
