22 oz bottle with a very attractive label depicting a portrait of its namesake. Picked up at a small shop in Wells, Me, and enjoyed by a crackling campfire at Dixon's Campground in Ogunquit. Pours a clear, amber body with an attractive, ivory head that hangs around for several minutes. Nice lace patches the glass all around.
Aroma features grapefruit and tangerine citrus hops, and a hint of butterscotch.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied and has an ideal carbonation level for this style pale ale.
Taste is quite smooth, with an excellent balance of hops and malts. Plenty of hops bitterness here, but a very well rounded pale ale that has a lot going on. Some tart apple notes jump into the profile midway through, and the finish is only slightly bitter.
My first Shipyard brew, and one of the better, bottled, Maine microbrews I sampled during my week in the Pine Tree State. This is an ale that I could enjoy time and time again. Very well done.

This pale ale pours a not so pale orange color with a very thin white head. The smell is mild and of grains. It is not particularly pleasant. The taste is quite a bit better, albeit very simple. It is of grains (slightly roasted) with a hint of citrus that primarily comes through in the aftertaste. There are some mild yeast and toffee flavors as well. The body is on the light end of medium and the finish is semi-dry. There is very little hop presence at all. This is a very basic beer, not offensive in any way, but not exciting either. I would definitely drink it again, but not if I was looking for anything interesting.

14 oz. on tap at Hadlock Field in Portland, Maine, served in a plastic cheater pint.
Appearance: Clear copper. Very thin head; mostly bubbles.
Aroma: A little bit of fruit along with some grass and a bit of herbal touch.
Taste: Toffee, grain, a little bit of citrus. Somewhat Bass-like. Herbal character from the nose is more noticeable on the palate.
Mouthfeel: Smooth and easy.
Overall: Nice traditional ale. Not a risk-taker, but a fine all-purpose ale.
