Black color with a thick thin dark caramel head with short retention.
Mild aroma with notes of cocoa, some milk powder and mild licorice.
Flavor with notes of cocoa, some piney hops, just a bit of milk powder, roasted malt, hint of ash, coffee and cola. Dry aftertaste with a medium bitterness.
Light towards medium body with good carbonation.
Easy to drink, but still quite assertive Stout with predominant dark chocolate notes, some malt complexity and relatively well perceivable hops (ps. Not as much an American Stout).

Poured into a grip shaped goblet: color is black, head is tan with mixed bubble sizes, some lacing on the glass, head presented quite large at least 2 inches and took some time to dissipate with lingering top.

Smell is where the chocolate seems to present most dominantly with light sweetness and more bitter chocolate flavor, subtle roasted malt comes through.

Taste seems to have more strong and almost dominant roasted malt which has an almost acrid quality that detracts from this beer; chocolate is present but more of back end flavor with more bitter cacao like flavor.

Mouthfeel is bitter, almost harsh with the acrid like quality coming through and presenting itself strongly on the tongue.

Overall a promising beer but there is just harshness to it that detracts from the chocolate component and balance of beer.

My New Shipyard Beer Sunday (Week 672) is rolling along nicely! This one sets me up to segue out of the oddballs and adjuncts and into the land of IPAs, which will be like throwing Br'er Rabbit into the briar patch. I hope, anyway.

From the bottle: "Stout with cocoa nibs".

My hand strength finally kicked in and I was able to screw off the screwed-up cap on this bottle & given that it was relatively fresh, I gave it a heavy-handed pour in the hopes of seeing a pseudo-cascade. I was highly successful in that regard & it helped to form two-plus fingers of dense, fluffy, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown head with good retention that left behind good lacing in its wake. Color was Dark Brown to Very Dark Brown (SRM = > 27, < 34) with mahogany highlights. Nose had a slightly sour chocolatiness, reminiscent of carob balls. Ersatz, vegetarian chocolate that I tried as a little kid in the early-1970s & I was immediately not a fan. Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium & I am becoming convinced that there is something about their water that is causing this. I hate to dun them for it, but it is a pervasive thing in their beers. The taste was less sharp than the nose, but it still did not make me think of chocolate milk. Instead, it had that dry powdery taste of Nestle's Quik powder or something along those lines. I once put a spoonful of that powder in my mouth sans milk thinking that it would be nice and chocolaty. Instead, it was just dry and odd tasting. It was the same thing here - I was expecting something sweet & I just was not getting it. Finish was chocolaty, but not evocative of chocolate milk and not a very good Sweet Stout, either. Oh, well. YMMV.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of milk chocolate, considerable sweetness. Taste is chocolate, roasted malts, hints of coffee, none of the sweetness in the aroma. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a pretty good beer.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a tulip

L: Dark dark brown pour.. nearly black. 1 finger of off-white head. Solid rim of lacing.

S: Roast, sweets, and cocoa. Smells like a milk stout.

T/F: Follows the nose. Roasted grains/malts... mild coffee, chocolate, and somewhat bitter. Balanced with sweetness. Chocolate milk moniker isn't far off. Relatively light in body. Finish is sweet and roasty.

O: A pretty average milk stout. Not great, not bad... easy to drink... relatively forgettable.

12 oz brown bottle into a Belgian snifter. Undated. 5.4% ABV listed.
Pours very dark brown, nearly black and opaque in the glass. Despite a vigorous pour, only a thin short-lived beige head is raised, but there is some spotty lacing.
Excellent aroma if mild aroma with a comparatively disappointing flavor. The flavor, however, does have a relatively strong finish featuring both dark chocolate and dark malts. Very good bitter-sweet balance.

This bottle may be past its prime.

It looks really nice in the glass. The aroma gives a slight clue that something may be amiss. A slight funkiness turns into the full blown thing. The taste is overpowered by the funky dank almost to the point of tossing the brew.

Not recommended due to bad sample. Recommend only trying fresher samples.

12oz bottle, bottled on 12.06.16. Served in a shaker pint glass.

Appearance: Black, letting only a tiny bit of very dark cola brown in at the edges. Initial tan head died back to a thin ring at the edge. No lacing.

Smell: Roasted malt, cocoa powder, a bit metallic.

Taste: Deep roasted chocolate malt flavor, nicely bitter and not overly sweet. Some sweetness in the middle before a lingering bitter finish that is part black coffee, roasted malt again, and just a hint of ashiness.

Mouthfeel: Nicely thick, prickly carbonation.

Overall / Drinkability: This is overly sweet when very cold out of the fridge, so I had it again after warming up to more typical stout temperature. It is more bitter when warm and I think more balanced, but it's just an okay stout - not something I would want to drink a lot of. One is enough for me.
