A: deep brown/ black. Half a finger of head, not very frothy, but sticks around.

S: distinctive blueberry scent from across the room. Up close, it smells of a rich and sweet chocolate-covered blueberry. A slight bitterness, perhaps coffee or dark chocolate.

T: quite sweet, but not as overwhelmingly sweet as it smells. More of that dark chocolate bitterness. Perhaps some other fruit notes, maybe cherry.

M: Good balance between smoothness and alcoholic burn.

O: great take on a fruit beer. Usually these are wheats, seldom do you see a dark fruit beer. But it really works.

Appearance-Almost opaque dark brown with hints of maroon looking through the glass. Eggshell to tan foam that dissipates quickly.

Smell-Undeniably and overwhelmingly blueberry. I can smell it from across the bar without even picking up the glass. When I do pick up the glass however, I get a good amount of tootsie roll chocolate underneath the fruit.

Taste-Follows the nose although in a different order. Chocolate and coffee on the front, ends with blueberry.

Mouthfeel-Hefty beer but what can I expect from a porter?

Overall-Good beer. The layering of flavors and aromas is impressive and the flavors and aromas themselves are vibrant and delicious.

a cross between a scotch ale and a porter with crushed maine blueberries, who does this?! awesome stuff here, and a real unique brew to say the least. it pours a blueberry juice stained light brown, lighter than a porter traditionally looks, with a faint pinkish glow and an inch of sudsy head. it smells awesome too, like fresh wild blueberries from the field or forest, with a hint of peat smoke on the malt and a smooth chocolate finish, complex and perfect really. faint wasps of runaway yeast and alcohol slow it down just a touch. the alcohol is invisible on the flavor though, and I was shocked to learn this was so high in abv. blueberries punctuate the smoked malt and cocoa notes just right, and excellent compliment to the rich earthy cereal notes. the berries ore obviously fresh, I get the tartness of the skins, the sweetness of the fruit, and an almost gelatinous feel from the pulp. less than full bodied, but still a rich beer. sugars from the berries go a little sweet in the finish, and the carbonation is right where it should be, mellow but persistent. overall this is one of the best shipyard beers out there, entirely different, and it worthy of great praise. the constant negative talk about shipyard can be put to rest with this brew, the barleywine, and of course the smashed pumpkin. a real treat this one if you can find it.
