Rauch Pu Pu is crystal clear and a medium amber, polished gold sort of a color. The head is pillowy, off white, and shows pretty decent retention.
Rauch Pu Pu's aroma is very gentle, almost to the point of being neutral. Up front smokiness leads the way, making room for maltiness in the form of fresh baked bread and lightly toasted grains. This is where the earthy aroma of tea makes its presence known, adding a little depth to the overall proceedings.
As smooth as any lager I've had of late. Flavors of smoke are the first thing I notice. Smoke is pleasantly light in nature. Bready flavors of malt lend support as they did with the aroma, helping give the flavor profile structure and support. All of this leads into a finish that is both gentle and lasting in its dryness.
All things considered, this is a very pleasant rauch beer. The smoke flavors are gentle, taking more of a supporting role to the beer. My only real complaint is that the maltiness I normally expect from a helles didn't step up to take its place.

Clear golden amber pour with puffy 3 fingers of slightly off white head - creamy foam atop head.
Off the head there is initially a slight whiff of sulphur, but as fades more notes of doughy, bready malt, a bit of earthy hop, and as warmed a nice woody smokiness.
Bready grainy malt with a mild spicy earthy bitterness and that woody smoky character, that takes on a more meaty flavour as warms.
Medium mouthfeel with brisk bright carbonation - exceptionally smooth and drinkable, with a really nice lingering smokiness. Fantastic smoked Helles.

Can: Poured a clear yellow color lager with a large foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of light smoked notes with clean crisp cereal notes. Taste is also a mix of crisp cereal notes with light smoked undertones and a semi-dry finish. Body is about average for style with good carbonation. Very enjoyable and easy drinking with not as much smoked notes as I was expecting.

It pours clear copper with a large beige head, pretty airy. Good retention and clumpy lacing. The aroma is grainy with light toast and a faint hint of smoke; earthy, bruised grassy green pungency, distant campfire. The flavor follows with a fairly forthright smooth malt character, black tea bitterness that is earthier than it is bitter and not astringent, complementary but definitely central to the overall profile and lingering in the finish. There is also obviously some smoke that is assertive but not in your face. It is drinkable, refreshing, dry and crisp. Just what it should be and balancing a tight rope between complexity and easy-drinking-ness.
This is a very nice smoked lager. Probably the best local take I've ever had. Not as strong of a smoke presence as Bamberg beers, but as complex. As usual with Dunham's beers, they have done a great job of adding complexity and interest to the beer through an "extra" ingredient, something that I'm often not a fan of, is often done poorly and something which often causes me to pass over beers in the store. Not here though. I liked this immensely and am now wanting to seek out and try fermented black tea from China.
