Many thanks to orrshow for bringing me a bottle of this from his last trip to Quebec.

Deeply hazed medium brown in colour. A thin beige head developed, but faded away quickly.

Aroma is of toffee and liquor, and some a whiskey impression like peat.

Toffee sweet at the very front opening in the middle to a broader mix of flavours. Whiskey and faint licorice sneak in with a bit of caramel. Boozy but not overpowering. Lingering scoth impression. Overall flavour is relatively restrained for the ABV.

Mouthfeel is good, smooth but not flat, at once hinting towards a liquor in body but staying beerlike in carbonation.

I tend to lean towards the malty end of the scotch ales. This one is more subtle. Certainly worth a try though.

Paradisiac Scotch Ale has a strong, malty nose, redolent with molasses and thick maple syrup, brown sugar and vanilla. A subtle peat scent pervades these, as well as hints of chocolate.

On the tongue, the brew turns out to be as flavorful as the nose hinted, with huge maple syrup and cognac-like oak flavors leading off the taste, followed closely by creamy chocolates, vanillas, raisin, date, and peat flavors that swirl madly. Very subtle hints of tobacco and ash rise to the surface in the later movements, and the aftertaste, while light, is full of deeply toasted grains and lasts for quite a while. Mouthfeel is medium-heavy, feeling more like a light cream, and carbonation is set at medium.

Overall, this is an excellent Scotch Ale, being finely nuanced and carefully tuned to bring out the best of each flavor, and it's obvious that the brewers haven't skimped on ingredients. Well worth a try.

A: Clear, deep ruby-brown with a thin ring of tan head, no retention.

S: Plenty of dark caramel, candied fruit, brown sugar, raisin, nut, definitely some alcohol.

T: Dark caramel, nut, treacle, raisins, candied fruit, brown sugar, rum, balanced bitterness, warming alcohol.

M: Residual sweetness is balanced by a drying alcohol finish.

D: A warming sipper for a cold night.
