i have never had anything like this before, holy cow. an imperial black ipa aged in cabernet barrels and then dry hopped. to say its complex is a profound understatement. pours blackcherry colored and bubbly into a wine glass. the nose is tart and hoppy. there are an awful lot of flavors going on here. first its the puckery fruity vibes from the wine barrel, next comes a big roasted malt blast and finally a robust but complimentary hop finish. has anyone else ever made one of these? its well and truly delicious. perfectly carbonated and feels like more than 8% abv. went magically with a rare grilled ny strip steak with wild mushroom and rosemary cream sauce and balsamic roasted fennel. a must try for anyone interested in pushing the envelope! worth every penny of the $18 it cost...

750ml bottle. Pours dark brown with a medium fizzy/creamy tan head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is roasted malts and some vinous alcohol with some black licorice and dark fruit - a little astringent.

The flavor is roasted malt with some tart fruity red wine and some plums. The finish is some bitter roast with some leathery char. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with light carbonation - a little watery.

Overall, an interesting concept. The more I drank it, the less I cared for it though. And at $18 a bottle...not worth it.

Enjoyed a 750mL bottle of this w/ CurtisMcArthur in Nashville, TN. Poured from the "India" Green colored body with various hop leaves around the label into a 12oz Snifter Glass. Has "2011 Bottling" on the side of the label.

Aroma- Tons of malt and roast hit the nose but no hop this time around... The malt definitely took over in this one.

Appearance- Pours a 1 finger head that is tan and dies fairly quickly. Has a deep brown colored body with no clarity. Leaves thick suds behind.

Flavor- Light malt, tons of grain, smooth ingredients but almost no sign of hop? Light Bitterness on the finish. Where are you at Black IPA?

Mouthfeel- Light-Medium Bodied, Medium Carbonation, Smooth, Sweet, and finishes with malt.

Overall Impression- A nice brew from CrabTree but where is the hops? Almost could have been called a Black Ale. Nonetheless, I look forward to enjoying many more beers from Crabtree down the road.

A: Dark brown; almost black - no light comes through. Poured a 2 finger tan head that dissipated to a wisp. Laced in wavy rings.

S: Toasted malts; chocolate, coffee and a little dark fruit. Some licorice and red wine. Alcohol and a little astringency in the background.

T: Very consistent with the nose. Resiny hop character in the middle; any other hop character overpowered by malt and red wine flavors. Finish is smokey/leathery/woody.

M: Light-to-medium body. Moderate carbonation. A little sweet, a little resiny. A little warming alcohol.

O: Fair complexity - like a Zinfandel malt character. Other than resiny feel, disguised hop character.
