Pours deep murky copper brown with thin tan head. The aroma is raisins, prunes, a bit of pine hops and some molasses. Smells nice. The taste has more hops than the nose hinted at. It seems to start with raisins, prunes and super ripe cherries. Quickly solid pine hops and resin goodness surface and take hold of the flavor. It gets a bit crystal malt like toward the finish. Enjoyable product.

I recently picked up a bottle of Snipes Mountain Roza Reserve as I'd remembered enjoying their Sunnyside Pale a while back, and I was not disappointed!

At first taste it seems incorrectly labeled, and although my bottle reads "Barley Wine Style Ale", their website now lists it as a strong ale, which I think might possibly be a more fitting style-designation. I remember finding the Sunnyside Pale somewhat light for the style, and this follows along those lines... somewhat...

It's not without a dextrinous character, and in fact, it's got some viscosity to it! After each sip I can see very tiny bubbles rising slowly along the side of the glass, hindered by the thickness of the malt. Carefully poured from the lees, it's got a mostly-clear deep-copper body with a ruby cast and orange highlights; and a frothy and creamy tan head. The head retention is quite good, although it can take a bit of a rough pour to get it started, and it leaves remarkable, thick rings of frothy lace about the glass with each sip. Quite nice indeed! Their website lists its starting gravity at a very respectable 22.5 P, and it finishes at a whopping 5 P! That gives it 9.2% abv; and to give a comparison, Sierra Nevada's Bigfoot starts at 23 and ends at 6, so it's not that shabby!

What it seems to be lacking, and what people probably expect and don't get, is a certain richness of malt character. Why that is, I don't know. It's got a very nice dark-caramel/scorched sugar side to it. And it is malty... just not overly malty. Maybe it's the malt they're using. Or, I'd thought that perhaps they've got a small mash tun and needed to use some sugar to achieve the 22.5 Plato that they get, but there's no mention of that on the label. Regardless, it's got a pretty straightforward, darkly caramelized maltiness that's quite nice and very well balanced throughout with citrusy and lightly piney hops. You find them in the aroma, in the flavor, and in the finish. They're initially more grapefruity, but they become piney and resinous in the finish. There's also a weird note of vanilla across the middle that's mentioned on the label. I haven't got a clue as to where that's coming from. Maybe there's some malt extract involved. I don't know. It's odd. But not off-putting.

So, barleywine or not? I don't think it really matters! It's a well-made, enjoyable, balanced and drinkable strong ale that barely shows it's alcohol in the flavor or aroma, but still lends you warmth on a chilly night.

A 650 mL bottle from Liquid Solutions.

A: The barleywine is a red-brown color, stronger in the red with brown highlights. The head was not too impressive but it has nicely laced throughout the seidel.

S: The aroma threw me for a minute. It is all hops and no malts. The hops are citrusy and much bigger than I expected.

T: The taste brings this back into barleywine territory. The malts are heavy and strong from first sip. They have a grainy sugary malt base that has some elements of molasses in it. As I let the ale sit in my mouth, the body comes across with a certain thinness that can't be overcome by some of the other flavors. The hops from the nose make an appearance here and add enough of a kick to make the malts hold up a little better.

M: The malty body starts strong but whimpers to the finish line. The hops kick in near the end in enough of a quantity to save the finish.

D: The ale was a throw-away in a Liquid Solutions purchase but it has proven to be a wise selection. The ale has a strong malt and hop body that allow it to stand up against most American barleywines.

Pours amber with some blood red tints. Small, mediun colored tan head imparts little patches of lace to the chalice.
Aroma pine resin and some caramel and toffee stand out.
Flavor has a syrupy brown suar note to hit with lots of astringent hop oils and some toffee notes.
Mouthfeel is decidely thin for a barleywine. Noy enough to oomph to make it memorable. Some hints of grain alcohol when it significantly warms.
Drinkability is about average. It's a decent beer just off style and just doesn't bring enough of a uniqueness to the palate to make it worth seeking out.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a clear reddish orange with a fine half finger off-white head with great retention and lots of lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, fresh dark fruit, milder light stone fruit, a hint of cherry and an odd vegetal component, hint of piney hops. Flavor is fresh and dried dark fruit, tart cherry, lightly vinous and astringent oaky. Finishes tart, but leaves a pleasant long lasting woody and malty aftertaste. Medium bodied with good carbonation. Flavor has a good profile for a barleywine, almost leaning towards an English style, except it is quite tart and has a distinct sour cherry flavor in the late taste and finish. I'm not sure if this was intentional or if this one is starting to go off (tit's over a year old. I'm not a sour fan and the tartness was not something I expected in a barleywine. Complex and interesting, this might just the barleywine for those who like cherry tartness in their ales. Finished it, but probably would not get this again if this was the correct flavor for this barley wine.

22 oz. bottle.Pours a reddish brown color with very little head.Has a floral hop and caramel sweet aroma. I left this alone in the glass for a few minutes to warm up. The sweet essence of cinnamon , honey , and white chocolate travel with this brew along with a subtle hop tang to balance. Full bodied but not syrupy, it is highly drinkable. Has a mild alcohol flavor to finish.
I didn't cellar this bottle but it has the nuances of an aged Barleywine. A pleasent surprise.

(at brewery, from notes) Red, amber color. Fruity with orange/citrus hops in the nose. Nice fruit tastes with a good hop kick. Nice full body. Hints of earthy, floral character. Overall, very nice.

22oz bottle (purchased January 2014) into a tulip. Pours a crystal clear ruby amber w/ a 1/2-finger head.

Aroma is a blend of sweet, fruity caramel malt and floral NW hops in about equal measure. There's another element, hard to pin down. Almost a sour, slightly acidic woody note. Not sure if intended.

Taste likewise is an interesting blend of sweet fruity hops, bitter floral hops, and a sour, almost lactic acidity. If label said "American barleywine aged on sour cherries" I would not be surprised. In any case, it's not off-putting and actually gives this beer a unique quality.

Mouthfeel is reasonably balanced, medium body. Low carbonation.

Overall a very different, but enjoyable, barleywine experience.

My bottle says Rosa Reserva, but I am assuming it to be the same beer with just a fancier name. 2006 bottle.

A: Opaque, dark brown color with a 1 inch head that receded to nice lacing after a minute or 2, not too bad.

S: Citrusy hops, smells pretty good.

T: Caramel malt and citrusy hops, it tastes good although there could be some more dpeth to it, perhaps it will age well.

M: A bit thin maybe, coats the mouth with a sweet bitterness, but it really doesnt linger long.

D: Not a particularly memorable barleywine, dont think I will buy any more but its not bad by any means, its a nice change of pace from all the ipa's and belgians I have been drinking lately.

On tap for the PDX Barleywine Long Haul. I'd had this before up in Yakima and remember it quite differently.

Poured a clear deep amber with a lovely quaff of foam. The clustering of small bubbles was also specked with what looked like bits of malt chaff. The head died pretty quickly after drinking began, and it interfered with aroma to some extent.

The aroma was surprisingly mild on this fellow, though it was served a bit cooler than necessary. As it warmed, an overly astringent malt smell kicked in and was more dominant than the otherwise tame hop aroma.

The taste was unique in its astringent and dryness. At first the flavor was a bit off-putting, but as the beer warmed, other flavors blossomed and spiced up the mixture. Still, the woody and malt flavors remained in the forefront. There was no residual sweetness and no sense of alcohol.

This beer wasn't very interesting to start with but once it warmed it become somewhat interesting. A glass was plenty this time which is odd because the last time I had it I remember easily and happily consuming a tallboy (liter) of it. Then I don't remember much else.

This is a very well made barley wine from a new brewer from Eastern Washington. Slightly sweet, young and fruity with no shortage of hops this is very drinkable at such a young age. Compared to Dick's this is smooth around the edges and better structured. Love to have some bottles of this for the cellar

Had this on draft at Bob's Keg and Cork in yakima, 1 liter mug no less! It poured a rich burgundy color with a slight tan head that left only a little lace. Would have liked more head, but the color was great.
The aroma on this was pretty mild for a barelywine, more hops then malt, the standard NW profile, citrus and pine.
The taste on this was really yummy but again, pretty mild. Or maybe I should say balanced. But thats what I really liked about it, man did this go down easily. It was served at the right temperature, not to cold, which certainly helped, no having to stare at that sucker wait for it to open up. It tasted a bit more malty then the aroma, mainly caramel, although the citrus was certainly there as well as a more piny, bitter finish, although not a palate buster.
The mouthfeel was surprisingly light, at least for a barleywine, with just a touch of spritz.
The drinkablity on this was dangerously high for me. Had I not been passing through, I could have gladly spent some more time drinking these. With absolutely not indication of the ABV, that could be dangerous! Unassuming and not the most complex, but very well done.

Pours very cloudy, dark honey color with small suspended chunks floating around.

Nose of ripe stone fruits and lemon zest.

Tastes fairly dry for a barleywine with lemon zest dominating.

Nice fairly thick, smooth mouthfeel.

This is a dry barleywine that goes down smooth and leaves a rather stringent lemon zest aftertaste. I could drink this for awhile but it just isn't flavorful enough for my tastes.

Vintage 2004

Pours sparkling clear dark amber, with ruby hues. A beige, dense head rose to an inch and slowly receded to an opaque skim coat on the surface. Some nice webs of froth cling to the glass.
Aromatics are vineous and malty. A large red wine character meshed with crystal malt waft upward. Raisiny alcohol notes come forward along with hints of vanilla and smoke. A bit sweet but quite complex.
Medium bodied but very sticky and a bit syrupy.
The pallet leads off with more red wine and sweet malt. Scortched sugars and cherry cough syrup continue, with port-soaked raisins and grape tannins coming through as it warms.
Finishes a bit hot and sweet, with lingering warmth and a firm bitterness.
Still a little rough around the edges after 3 years, and quite unique for a Barleywine. The "Reserva" moniker on the label is well deserved.

A: Pours a murky shade of brown with an above average head. Lots of floaters in this one with some spotty lace left behind.

S: Tons of sweet malt up front. Notes of brown sugar, caramel, and hops.

T: Nice hoppy Barleywine. Tons of depth with waves of sweet malt. The balance is really nice in this one. Subtle notes of dark fruit come through as well. The finish is well hopped.

M: Full bodied smooth with good carbonation.

D: Good Overall.

A: Poured a nice amber color with a medium dirty white head, average carbonation.

S: Nose is big hops, floral and piney.

T: Taste big hopd upfront, mostly floral with a caramel malt sweetness at the end.

M: Mouthfeel is syrupy, medium bodied and pretty tasty.

O: Pretty good bwine but could use a bit more flavor other than the hops.

Served in tulip. Poured a hazy orangeish-amber color, lighter than you generally see in the style, and had no head. The aroma was fairly sweet with a noticeable alcohol scent and was bit fruity (grapes?) smelling.

The flavors were about typical, thick malts mostly, the alcohol was smoother and the fruit taste was less noticeable than in the scent. The body was smoother and more even than a lot of the style and except for the alcohol went down very nicely.

The smoothness makes this very drinkable. Overall, a very decent example of the style, certainly worth trying. I don't know when this batch was brewed, so if you see this in bottles, it might be worth setting some aside to see if some time evens out that alcohol sharpness.

From a 22 oz bottle without a date, this poured rich ruby red and raised a huge foamy head that refused to go away so I finally had to eat my way thorogh it to get to the beer, Nose was woody and earth aroma, that has overtones of ripe fruit. Mouthfeel very rich, and some the flavor is sweet caramel,and finish is slightly bitter. Lot of big hunks of what I assume is yeast in the bottom of the glass.
