Pours opaque amber with beige foamy head. Almost no scent but malty nutty wheat dopplebock with slightly rank resin overtone of crisp bready toast and sweat berry jelly.

Scuttlebutt Brewing Company "Weizenbock"
1 Pint 6 fl. oz. brown glass bottle without production codes or freshness dating
$3.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: I haven't had a beer from Scuttlebutt in a while because, honestly, I haven't found them to be that good. Utilitarian? Yes. Drinkable? Yes. But nothing special really. But this was inexpensive and it's one of my favorite styles so let's get to it. It's poured a clear ruby-colored body beneath an inch thick head of yellowed off-white. Not a bad start! It smells malty sweet with a little bit of fruitiness. It's not bold at all, but you can smell it, it's not like you have to swirl it around looking for notes. Clean. Nothing odd going on. OK let's taste it... malty, bready, kind of fruity with dark-skinned fruits (raisin, plum, cherry), and lightly spicy from the yeast. A light touch of green banana. Not bad, but not unlike the aroma it's kind of limited. I was expecting it to be fuller and richer. Oddly it's at the top of the range for alcohol for the style, clocking in at 8%. Or is that the case, it's just been fermented out? Hmmm? Either way, the alcohol doesn't show. It's weird, I'm not sure how you'd even get it to taste this smooth and light... no one's going to confuse this with Aventinus! It's not even that full in body. I'd call it medium with a dextrinous edge whereas it really should be medium-full to full in body. It is creamy though, with a moderate, fine-bubbled carbonation. Ahhh, maybe I'm being too tough on it, there is some mice character there. And it's soft and supple and easy to drink. It has no real defects except that it's light for the style. Given the price I could live with it though as an everyday stronger ale, but it doesn't score well if judged to style.

From the 22 oz bottle, it pours a hazy darkish amber with a nice head. Lacing as you enjoy it. Smell is a bit of yeasty bread, followed by the mouthful of boozy bread. Yum! Hic!

This beer pours deep brown color with a high tan head. The smell and test initially muffin, morphing into musty, boozy wheat as you drunk on. Imagine drinking a piece of old bread, only you like it. Slightly sour.

Poured from a brown 22 oz. bottle. Has a bronze color with amber hues and a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of malts, some spices. Taste is malty, bready, alcohol is present, a bit of mild spice. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a pretty good beer.
