Clear orange amber, thin tan head with okay retention. Boozy sweet citrus aroma. Strong citrus hop up front mellows quickly to barley caramel sweetness. Moderate warming and moderately-low hop linger. Smooth, thin feel.

Very balanced DIPA, not too complex, just hops barley and alcohol. Ultimately a fairly boring high alcohol beer that’s enjoyable because nothing’s objectionable.

I have had mixed results with Scuttlebutt so far, this is easily the best offering I have had from them.Ppours into a nonic a clear rich copper color with a nicely formed one finger off white head that left two broken rings of lace as it settled into a frothy mass.Aromas are deeply fruity with nutty maltiness and a good amount of sweet alcohol, the nuttiness really makes the aromas interesting.Flavors of drunken citrus fruits and big caramel malts,I detect a little leather in there and more leafy hops in the finish. This is a pretty complex and somewhat boozy DIPA,again easily the best offering I have had from Scuttlebutt.

Pours nicely into nonic. Abundant head. Nice citrus notes on the nose. Pine and citrus overflow and dominate the palate. A very aggressive West Coast IIPA that is a worty representative of the style.
Not readily available at the stores for whatever reason. Purchased at the brewery. Will definitely snag again when I see it.

Pours a bright orange. Thin white head. Aroma was citrus, grapefruit, alcohol and bitterness.

Taste was just average, high bitterness, not a lot of hop mouthfeel. Substantial alcohol heat on it. This style of dipa is fairly a dime a dozen. Long hop boil, high alpha acid, but almost no dry hopping. Decent pricing on it.

A little bit of citrus lingers around the tongue, but its primarily just bitterness and alcohol heat that gets delivered here. Could use more caramel to soak up the alcohol.

Not recommended unless you're looking for a tick or a relatively cheap buzz.

22oz bottle - not much to say about this one beforehand, other than giving it mild props for a so-so hop pun name.

This beer pours a mostly clear, pale copper amber hue, with two fingers of puffy, rocky, and kind of chunky off-white head, which leaves some layered island group lace around the glass as it gently subsides.

It smells of chalky caramel malt, biscuity toffee, warm citrus pith, further indistinct tropical fruit notes, pine resin, and a certain paint thinner-esque alcohol astringency. The taste is bready, doughy caramel malt, more gritty toffee, a still prominent white chalkiness, wet pine needles, mixed and matched domestic and tropical citrus fruit, and further leafy, weedy, and well-perfumed floral hops.

The carbonation is certainly active in its plain and genuinely frothy support, the body a sturdy medium weight, and smooth, with a small boozy and hoppy caveat that even the most casual aficionados of the style can't help but turn a blind eye to. It finishes well off-dry, the caramel/toffee malt coming out on top of the heady hops, in the end.

An agreeable enough version of an American DIPA, yet with perhaps just a wee bit too many phenolic underpinnings to deem it anything beyond a simplistic iteration, as such. Not bad, just kind of disjointed, the not so high 16-proof alcohol a little too big for its proverbial britches, which is a put-off, anyway and anyhow.

Pours grapefruit coloured body with enormous foam pouring from my large Sam Adams glass. Mildly grapefruit hoppy aroma. Big IBU, biased toward bitter than malt. Somewhat palate erasing.Good drinking, with a little booziness in the aftertaste. Thanks for hooking me up, Steve.

Scuttlebutt "Hoptopia" Imperial India Pale Ale
12 oz. brown glass bottle, Lot # is unclear
$1.79 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Scuttlebutt's Hoptopia pours a semi-hazy orange-gold body beneath a frothy head of slightly off-white foam. The head retention and lacing are good, and it leaves streaks and spots of lace behind as you go.

Both hops and malt come through in the nose, although it's not any more hoppy than a standard IPA. It's doughy and bready/biscuity with some orange-marmalade, soft pine, and gentle resin.

The same is true of the flavor, with both hops and malt in play, but without anything more than bitterness and strength indicating an "Imperial" designation; and thusly it seems a little lacking. The malt that seemed sweetish in the nose can't really compete with the bold bitterness and splash of drying alcohol, and the hops that began fairly dull in the aroma seem to fade even more. What you're left with could be likened to a densely muscular prize fighter that has stance and stamina but no finesse.

Clear orange color with off-white head. Aroma is hoppy with earthy and sweet orange notes. There is also some sweet malt and stale grains note. Taste starts somehow sweet and fruity but gets quickly bitter and dusty. Bitterness is quite harsh with lots of grapefruit pith. Body is medium-light with medium carbonation. Overall it's a very classic, old school type DIPA. It has the harsh bitterness and earthy hops you expect from a classic example of the style.

1 Pint, 6 FL OZ. bottle into tulip glass.

A - Pours semi-cloudy dark-golden, carmel color, with a kind of weak white head...- some good lacing.

S - Hops and lots of sweet citrus - some orange & grapefruit tones with some pressence of pine-spice...

T - Booming with hops and pine flavor! Smooth & Bright! A great hop kick at the top, followed by some citrus, then ending with more pine-like spices...Pleasant & refreshing!!

M - Great carbonation! There's a good fullness. Present, but not 'too' much fruity/sweet flavors...The final pine/spice balances the beer out wonderfully!

O - This one is great!! How can this beer come from the same brewery that brewed Gail Force IPA…Gail Force Yuk, Hoptopia, YUM!!! I was surprised by the cloudy-dark 'unfiltered' look. Much darker than the typical IPA... I think what make this beer so good is the fine line of not over-doing 'it' in any particular area (hops, fruity-flavor, pine/spice, carbonation, and last but not least, alcohol level). VERY refreshing and will get again and...…Goin’ to look for a tap ASAP!!!

I really like this beer but am having trouble expressing how I actually feel. I do not know why. Almost mysterious. Big head, awesome color. Hop flavor is ample but cant quite pick up or specify the other flavors where I could be accurate. Overall, a nice hoppy beer, as it should be with the name. Love the label. Keep up the great work. Brew on !!!
