This beer is a great summer wheat beer. I remember going to Empire more excited about the beer than the food, so my expectations were high. I wanted my beer to pair well and be light and refreshing after a hard day working.

I believe the 3 additions to this wheat beer were ginger, honey, and lavender. The honey and lavender are what really seemed to stand out when I was deeply inhaling aromatic particles for my olfactory nerves to indulge upon. There is just something so interesting and floral about this beer, a last glimpse of summer contained in a wheaty-herbal complex. The beer went well with my seafood-rice-blue cornbread dish.

Unfortunately I prefer my witbiers to have a bit more of a protein haze, so it is definitely going to lose some points on appearance. Otherwise I was quite fond of this beer and will order it again next summer when it becomes available.

Enjoyed on tap at the brewpub with the brewer Tim Butler. The Aphrodiasac gruit ale with a big dose of yeast, that now overpowers it in smell, in taste, and also bulks up the mouthfeel. Unfiltered, more head on a light brown body. This is the more popular version, but it is way too yeasty for me, and the sourness has all but disapeared.

Notes via stream of consciousness: A light pour brings up a massive head of bright white froth. The hazy golden body beneath displays visible particulate in suspension. It appears to have pretty good head retention but only time will tell. The aroma is unusual. It's floral and spicy. Ahhh, I see, the label states that it includes lavender, ginger, and lemon peel. Interesting, that's a nice change of pace. The flavor follows, quite unusual as well. There's some tartness to it. The lavender is really nice. I don't find too much ginger, there's some, a bit of flavor, and a touch of spiciness, but it doesn't come on strong. Mildly bitter. It's sweetish with wheaty malt upfront and then the acidity steps in, followed by a a dry finish with the ginger and lavender lingering, and just a touch of lemon. Wow! I'm really impressed. Not only is it quite different from what you'd normally expect, it's also really well done. The ingredients are all clear, and they all work together, nothing steps all over something else; and it's really well balanced. Looking back, although the head retention was good, there's very little lacing left behind. Medium-light in body and gently effervescent. I'm surprised this isn't rated higher.

Had a couple pints at DBA in Brooklyn. The hazy, pale yellow beer was crisp and very drinkable on the hot summer. The wheat was soft and subtle, like a good wit, but the spicing was bigger and crisp, giving the beer an American edge. So yeah, it's a departure from a Hoegaarden or Allagash White, but it's a tasty beer worth checking out.

A little bit unbalanced. The lavender is way overdone. Great beer for a Snake bite though
