Serving: On tap at the brewpub, in a sampler flute
Served: 1 June 2016
Appearance: Poured a very dark brown, much darker than other dubbels I've had. honestly looked more like a Belgian dark. A subtle ring of bubbles around the rim, but barely noticeable under influence from the high ABV.
Smell: Big vanilla notes from the barrel, some slight booziness but nothing too crazy, and sweet caramel malts.
Taste: I honestly felt like this one just tasted like your standard barrel-aged beer. The dubbel itself had enough body to carry the barrel aged flavors, but not so strong that you could really taste the base beer itself. The beer was, as far as I could tell, a sweet, malt-driven beer, but that's what a dubbel is, right? The vanilla, subtle roastiness from the barrel, and bourbon notes really were the dominant flavors. Subtle booziness, but I didn't taste a lot of straight alcohol, which was nice. Dry finish.
Mouthfeel: Surprisingly watery, in my opinion.
Overall: A good beer, but a barrel aged beer that doesn't really stand out in my opinion. The dubbel maybe is a weird beer to carry the bourbon barrel flavors, since it doesn't lend that much difference from the barrel aged notes itself.
