On tap at the brewpub on 2/21/09. Served in a cervoise.

Pours black with a 1/2 finger or so of creamy mocha colored head. Retains around the edges, with some thin wisps in the center. This stays solid, throwing some nice looking swathes of lace up on the sides of the glass. The aroma is quite assertive but still pleasant smelling, with notes of cocoa powder, lactic sweetness and vanilla, and a big oat presence, that gives way to some floral and spicy hops that liven up the backend of the bouquet.

The taste is a thick mix of chocolate roast, vanilla, milky sweetness, and an extremely firm dose of hop bitterness that punches up the profile and nicely evens a lot of that sweetness out. The finish is overall bitter and dry but I'm still picking up a bit of residual sweetness as well. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a definite firm feel and prickly carbonation that gives this a thicker presence as times. Despite the heft, there is also an undercurrent of smoothness, which seems to be where a lot of the sweeter flavors dwell, keeping this a steady after dinner sipper.

I enjoyed this quite more than your average Milk Stout. It packed a nice robust profile and despite the body packing a bit too much of a prickle, still stayed fairly easy in the mouth. This was a great example of the phrase "dessert in a glass"!

A) Nearly opaque - just a touch of reddish hue. Minimal head tan to brown lacing and head.
S) Roasted grain, chocolate covered espresso beans. Robust chocolate aroma.
T) Liken to chocolate milk... cocoa sweetness, creamy flavor with mild smokiness. Rich flavor.
M) Slight chewiness in the end. Not quite full bodied just a bit lighter than anticipated.
D) A good brew. With the richness of the beer it would be hard to drink consecutive pints.

On tap at CBC - OG 1.062, FG 1.016 per CBC info. Into a goblet it goes...

Pours a deep, dark espresso color with a maple walnut/pumpernickel creamy head. Rather tight - about 2/3 finger. Not endless staying power but imposing first impression nonetheless.

Nose has a silky blend of milk, dark chocolate and a tinge of vanilla. Creamy as hell with some solid chocolate malt...maybe a little tannin from some patent as well?

This translates to more dryness on the palate than expected. The chocolate scent becomes an almost bone-dry cocoa taste - nice bitterness. Big malt character shows up - more dark tannins, slight bitterness and a little hop pine.

Mouthfeel has a nice lightness in contrast to its heft and nice bitterness. Very dry, slightly tight...but solid.

There's a lot going on with this one. Great use of ingredients to concoct something for everyone - sweetness, dryness, creaminess...all at various stages of the experience. It has a slow, savorable drinkability. Definitely nightcap material. Well done.

On tap at CBC. Poured into a cervoise glass.

A - Pitch black with a slight off-white, tan head that quickly receded to the sides of the glass and created a slight lace throughout.

S - Tons of chocolate and roasted malt. Sweet smelling with hints of vanilla.

T - Sweet off the bat, reminding me almost of white chocolate. Vanilla, cocoa and some espresso follow right behind the chocolate and mix with the sweet milk taste. The hops are surprisingly well represented and mix with the cocoa to form a bitter, almost powdery ending that really tied the whole beer together well.

M - Felt a bit thin to me. Still, it was smooth and well carbonated. Bitterness lingered just the right amount.

D - Could have had a few time permitting. Overall a very enjoyable beer. It was served a little on the cold side but that's understandable to make it work on a warm summer night. I'll definitely be back at CBC soon to have another pint. Someone tell me how to get a growler of this stuff, waitress wasn't budging!

Tried at the 20th Anniversary-32 beers on-tap extravaganza.
Dark coffee color with medium tan head that fades leaving lacing around the sides of the glass.
Aroma is fantastic. Dark semi-sweet chocolate, very intense with a touch of roasted coffee and chocolate malt.
Taste is smooth and mellow and filled with dark or semi-sweet chocolate. Touches of malt and coffee balance the chocolate flavors. Not very bitter yet not at all cloyingly sweet.
This is one of the best chocolate beers I've ever tasted. It has amazing chocolate flavor while not being overly sweet or bitter--something not accomplished very often. It is also well balanced enough so that you still know it's a beer.
