Very Good
Sgt. PepperSgt. Pepper
Notes: Sgt. Pepper is brewed with malted rye, wheat (and barley of course), and fermented with our Belgian yeast strain for its wonderful saison-y spiciness. Flavored with black, white, pink, and green peppercorns

Served from a bomber into a perfect pint glass. 10/18

Pours hazy orange, lighter on bottom. Very light foaming. Fruity and peppery nose. Funky malty taste. Light peppery finish, and really there in the aftertaste. Buzz stays in the mouth.

Pretty good.Perfect for lovely Rita, meter maid. (Where would I be without you?)

Bomber, bottled in 4-13

Pours hazed medium amber, with a slight golden hue. Minor head quickly departing, and leaves just a hint of a film, no collar and nearly no lace...ehh look to this one fo sure...

Just a hint of yeast and pepper on the nose.

Other have mentioned how this is sort of a one note brew...and the note is pepper...lots of pepper..I like pepper in my saisons, but more is needed here.

Carbonation on the low side

Not my favorite saison. Barely worth a try as there are a lot of more interesting and worthy saisons out there...go try some

Not much head and what's there settles to rom bubbles. No lace. The liquid is straw-gold color with a haze.

Sour and earthy aroma. Light black pepper in the program.

The black pepper is the predominant flavor here. It makes for an interesting blend with the traditional farm house sourness and earthy flavors. Solid body with an above average carbonation level.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy amber color; the head is strong and leaves plenty of streaky lace

Smell: Biscuity and spicy, with rotting stone fruit and clove tones

Taste: Biscuity malt flavors with apple and rotting stone fruit elements building; after the swallow, the peppercorn and clove flavors hit the taste buds and continue to build, with the heat of pink peppercorns starting to dominate the finish; the malt is also pronounced in the tail end as well

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation; heat on the tongue

Overall: While I didn't mind the heat, I was not crazy about the phenols here; the rotting fruit was somewhat unpleasant

Batch 01. Clear orange with a fluffy, light beige cap. Good head retention, spotty lacing. Aromas of sour wheat, grain and spice, hint of banana and bubblegum. Mild sweetness throughout, grainy and grassy, some wheat, lots of spicy pepper mid-palate through the finish that really lingered. Med/light body, airy carbonation, nice texture. An interesting beer, but the pepper was a bit overpowering for me after about half a glass.

look: 2 | smell: 2 | taste: 2.25 | feel: 1.75 | overall: 2

Appearance: Pours a lightly hazy, golden-orange body with no proper head formation.

Smell: Aromatic peppery vibe atop light pils, lightly bready malts with some chewing gum hints.

Taste: Toasty, bready, grainy maltiness with a little kiss of honeyed sweetness. Floral, lemony, soapy before the accumulating heat and heavily earthy spiciness of the peppercorns creeps in. Spicy, yeasty, altogether flat, thinning finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Kinda flat, actually.

Overall: Flop.

Poured a bright orange gold with the smallest of heads that quickly broke leaving little behind.

Smell is dominated by peppercorn and spices. There isn't room for anything else there, and that takes away from this.

The taste is also dominated by the peppercorns and spices. There is a touch of candi that comes along, but those spicy peppercorns just push everything else away.

Feel is about medium weight with medium carbonation. I found the finish a little slick.

Too much peppercorn ruins the beer. It was just over the top and not enjoyable after a few sips.

"Holy peppercorn, Batman!"

Cambridge's not-so-subtle, pepper infused, Belgian-style Saison kicks off with an exuberent golden pour. Lightly hazed, the bubbly elixir thrusts its carbonation into a fluffy, short statured head that cowers to the pepper additions and falls apart relatively soon after the pour, leaving no meaningful lace behind.

But the aromas are alive with the tingle of freshly cracked black peppercorns. As the spice tantelizes the olfactory senses, other background notes lurk in the pepper's shadows: green apple, pear, and berries give a fruity tone that make the low-lying malt a bit more apparent.

And its the taste of pepper that dominates the flavor profile. Early grain sweetness is lightly bready and dryly starched. But then the spicy pepper taste greets the front of the tongue with husky, rye-like character except it continues to intensify to near capsasin-like taste. Although soft under-ripened orchard fruit and yeast spices keep the beer wine-like, the sharpness of peppercorn makes the more finesse elements in balance go largely unnoticed.

The dry malt taste translates well to texture, but allows for the abruptness of peppercorn to spike the tongue with intense heat and prickling sensations. Finishing hot from the spice additions, the beer dries early on the palate and stays that way through the aftertaste.

In general, the Saison base beer is solid but not absolutely authentic. But the peppercorn additions through the balance way off for me. I'm sure that those who prefer hotter cuisine than I will appreciate the beer much better. I'm glad I split the large bottle with a friend as the whole contents would surely incite heartburn.

I absolutely adore this beer. Farmhouse and Saisons are definitely my favorite style, and I love the way that CBC gave this their own signature kick. The peppercorns are a wonderful addition at the back of your palate, accentuating the dryness of the saison. I had this first at ACBF this weekend, and just had to find it again.

The color on this beer is very dark for a Farmhouse, but it is still a crisp, clear and delightfully dry brew. I highly recommend this - I can't wait to try more from CBC
