On cask during the 2012 Great Pumpkin Festival held at the Cambridge Brewing Company on 10/27/12. Served in a pint glass. This is the Stout At The Devil cask conditioned on peppers, cinnamon sticks, cocoa nibs and pumpkin flakes.

Pours black in the glass with a sudsy dark mocha colored head. This retains with a decent amount of spotty frothiness at first but soon simmers down fairly quickly. The aroma initially smells hot with peppery spices but eventually notes of cocoa and especially cinnamon emerge to help temper the flames in your nostrils with a sticky and roasted feel. Once your nose gets accustomed to things, this actually gets really nice, with the flavors here working surprisingly well.

The taste is cocoa and dark roasted sweetness up front (and I’m even surprisingly getting a little pumpkin flavor as well) but then BAM! Those spices fire up the back of this BIG TIME! This is also where the cinnamon lies and like the nose, this helps temper lingering heat just a bit. Any hints of Brett from that base seems to be covered up here by the peppers. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and sharp up front which then smoothes out nicely across the back with a creamy feel. This is nice on cask.

While the taste itself was a little too hot for my liking from those ancho, chipotle and habanero peppers, they did work nicely with the others flavors here, especially in the nose and I was really impressed by what the cinnamon and pumpkin flakes added to this as well. I just wish that I could have handled more of this. 4 oz was more than enough.
