Notes / Commercial Description:
Beer Camp Across America West Coast Double IPA clocks in at 8.5% ABV and features five hop varieties, two of which went into Sierra Nevada’s “Hop Torpedo” dry-hopping device and impart hints of grapefruit and a floral note that recalls orange blossom. A light malt body and dry finish complement the bold hop profile.

Bottled on 6/20/14.

A - An aggressive pour into a tulip glass yields two fingers of frothy, egg-white foam. Thick lacing clings to the glass and a nice head hangs around from start to finish. Color is a clear, bright, deep, orange-ish gold.

S - Deep green aromas of earthy pine, dank pot, floral herbs, fresh-cut grass, and pungent citrus rind prevail. Musty in the best, most hop-forward way possible. That signature Sierra Nevada yeast and some biscuity malt balance the huge hope aromas. The 8.5% alcohol is mildly noticeable.

T - Massively bitter hop flavors blanket the palate, balanced by a sweet(ish) malt character that's quickly overtaken by a lastingly-bitter finish. Clean ale yeast. The alcohol presence is well-hidden. One of the most flavorfully bitter IPA's I've tasted.

M - Slightly creamy and medium in body. A bit oily and slick. Perfect carbonation.

O - Everything one could possibly want in an IPA. Absolutely brimming with fresh hop flavors and aromas.

this is great stuff, i don't care what anyone says, and at 5 bucks or so per bottle, and at this strength, its a fantastic buy. who cares that its not "west coasty" enough. it doesnt need to be all resinous and sticky to be delicious. i like the golden color, frothy head, biscuit malt or honey malt base, and the fact that its not bitter, fruity, oily, or piney, while still being extremely hoppy. its got a classic feel to it in that way, not overly aggressive, more reserved and refined i reckon. the malt does some balancing against the hops, but the bitterness here is toned way down, so its real drinkable even at 8.5% abv. carbonation is great, and the finish has some grassy and dried hay sort of notes to it, while the grain and hops are both super fresh and this is seemingly a perfect big ipa for summertime. no complaints from me, and again, the economics on it are great. forget the criticism, sierra nevada is still making some of the best hoppy beer in the country.

A-Pours a clear, bright, glowing orange color. Very pretty like most Sierra Nevada beers. Well put together head is frothy and white. Consistent lacing stains.

S-Zesty and tangy citrus hops. Grassy hops, too. Maybe a little bit of garlic. Grains. Slight booze. Hops are almost musty.

T-Candied citrus. Hop mustiness. Some garlic. Really tangy. Hops are spicy. Grains and a fairly dry malt flavor. It's sweet only in short bursts.

M-Has a resinous feel. Medium bodied. Some alcohol heat. Medium carbonation. Flavors linger.a sipper because, for some reason, the flavor stresses out my palate.

O-This beer has a pretty unique flavor, specifically in its hoppiness. I'm not sure I actually enjoy the hop flavor here. It's very tangy. The more I drink it the most I like it but it does have a very taxing flavor that exhausts the taste buds.

Poured from 24 oz bottle into tulip glass.

A: Pours a light sunshine yellow with large 3 finger soapy white head that seemed to hang around forever and left a ton of lacing.

S: Grassy hops and biscuit malts. Perhaps a touch of honey and a faint floral note. Fresh pine cones.

T: Follows the nose fairly closely. Wet grass and clover honey. A little grapefruit and some underlying spices. Orange peel.

M: One minute I'm thinking this is a bit sticky sweet, and the next a little bitter and bone dry. Some complexity here.

O: An interesting DIPA. I'm glad I tried it, but can't say that I enjoyed it enough to get another one.
