Beer Camp Across America West Coast Double IPA clocks in at 8.5% ABV and features five hop varieties, two of which went into Sierra Nevada’s “Hop Torpedo” dry-hopping device and impart hints of grapefruit and a floral note that recalls orange blossom. Bottled on 6/20/14.

A - An aggressive pour into a tulip glass yields two fingers of frothy, egg-white foam. Thick lacing clings to the glass and a nice head hangs around from start to finish. Color is a clear, bright, deep, orange-ish gold.

S - Deep green aromas of earthy pine, dank pot, floral herbs, fresh-cut grass, and pungent citrus rind prevail. Musty in the best, most hop-forward way possible. That signature Sierra Nevada yeast and some biscuity malt balance the huge hope aromas. The 8.5% alcohol is mildly noticeable.

T - Massively bitter hop flavors blanket the palate, balanced by a sweet(ish) malt character that's quickly overtaken by a lastingly-bitter finish. Clean ale yeast. The alcohol presence is well-hidden. One of the most flavorfully bitter IPA's I've tasted.

M - Slightly creamy and medium in body. A bit oily and slick. Perfect carbonation.

O - Everything one could possibly want in an IPA. Absolutely brimming with fresh hop flavors and aromas.

this is great stuff, i don't care what anyone says, and at 5 bucks or so per bottle, and at this strength, its a fantastic buy. who cares that its not "west coasty" enough. it doesnt need to be all resinous and sticky to be delicious. i like the golden color, frothy head, biscuit malt or honey malt base, and the fact that its not bitter, fruity, oily, or piney, while still being extremely hoppy. its got a classic feel to it in that way, not overly aggressive, more reserved and refined i reckon. the malt does some balancing against the hops, but the bitterness here is toned way down, so its real drinkable even at 8.5% abv. carbonation is great, and the finish has some grassy and dried hay sort of notes to it, while the grain and hops are both super fresh and this is seemingly a perfect big ipa for summertime. no complaints from me, and again, the economics on it are great. forget the criticism, sierra nevada is still making some of the best hoppy beer in the country.

Poured from the bomber into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass.

Beer pours a lovely golden color with dense foam that leaves some lacing all down the glass.

The aroma is pine and pineapple with a bit of grassy herbiness as well.

The taste hits with pineapple up front the some pine and a long, bittering finish with just a hint of malt beneath it.

The mouthfeel is medium and rather bubbly.

Overall, a very tasty westy IPA with a nice resinous finish. Yum.

Bottle fresh pour since it just came out..looks inviting and clear, golden with a hint of dark gold. Head is white, and stating fluffy for a minute or two. Pacing is not memorable. Smell is fruity and perfume, with hints of cedar, herbal, and earthy, stone fruit, sweet apple, and a floral-like essence present( rose petal, and slightly dank). Taste is hops and mild sweetness, finishing floral, and malt presence throughout, however a light malt presence. Mouthfeel is medium, with some coating and sweetness left on the palate after a while. Overall, solid double with a different 'herbal' type flavored, displaying the earthiness and spice-ful freshness in west coast(north-west) hops. Serve with a fresh pesto dish(es), roasted and crusted herb meats and cheeses. Lamb/chicken yellow curry. Coriander and cardamom spice, and yellow curry mussels/clams/seafood.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Nonic Pint.

Appearance: Clear gold with good sized white head and decent lacing.

Smell: Mostly bitter hop oils, with notes of citrus and pine. While I love Sierra Nevada, they often have beers that are a little low on aromatics, and I have also found many West Coast IPAs to be the same - all bitterness, little identifiable aroma. So not surprised that this is mild.

Taste: Big burst of citrus upfront that is pretty tasty but is short lived. There is then a long bitter, spicy and pine-like finish that is par for the course for a West Coast IPA.

Feel: Medium to full body. Moderate carbonation. Very dry finish. Also par for the course, but I like it this way.

Overall: Surprisingly straightforward West Coast IPA. While quite good, I expect a lot more in 2014, especially from a brewery of this calibur.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice glass.

Appearance: Pours a bright golden orange with a lot of bubbles. Big three finger white head with decent retention. Leaves a good amount of lacing.

Smell: A juicy, floral, and earthy hop forward aroma with good hints of citrus and pine. Citrus hops with juicy hints of grapefruit, orange peel, mango, lemon, pineapple, passion fruit, and apricot. Floral and perfume like hop hints. Earthy and dank hints of grass and pine resin. Solid malt backing with bready hints of biscuit, grains, straw, caramel, cracker, and yeast. Slight hints of honey. A very good big hoppy aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma, a big juicy, floral, and earthy hop driven taste with big notes of citrus and piney hops. Upfront citrus hops with notes of grapefruit, oranges, lemon zest, mango, passion fruit, pineapple, and apricot. Big notes of floral, earthy, and herbal hops with dank notes of pine resin and fresh cut grass. Good malt backing presence with notes of biscuit, straw, grains, cracker, caramel, and yeast. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Body is on the fuller side. Carbonation is moderate. Nicely juicy, spicy, oily, and drying. Alcohol heat is hidden well.

Overall: Another good West Coast IPA from Sierra Nevada. Good citrus and pine notes with a nice soft malt backing.

I missed out on grabbing a 12 pack of the beer camp but I am happy I found this.

A- orange/yellow color, very carbonated which lead to a big thick head.

A- floral/piney hops

T - Floral/piney hop taste with hints of orange with a malty finish.

M - medium bodied. dry taste you'd expect from an IPA with a crisp finish. fairly carbonated

Not the most amazing double IPA I have had but would drink again for sure. I would love for Sierra Nevada to start brewing more, I am already a big fan of torpedo, something else on their market would be nice.
