Notes: Inspired by the perennial café favorite, Double Latte combines two of the greatest things in life: good coffee and great beer. Oregon’s Ninkasi Brewing knows their way around a good cup of joe. Featuring cold-press coffee from the legendary Stumptown Coffee Roasters and a dose of milk sugar, this coffee milk stout is a rich and roasty treat.

This young-gun brewery has a locomotive charge. A rich conversation at a local bottle shop in 2005 has morphed into a Pacific Northwest staple. Named after the Sumerian goddess of fermentation, Ninkasi’s first batch of beer was Total Domination IPA and it remains a must for those with a lupulin itch.

Inspired by the perennial cafe favorite, Double Latte combines two great things: coffee and beer. Oregon's Ninkasi Brewing knows their way around a good cup of joe. Featuring cold-press coffee from legendary Stumptown Coffee Roasters and a dose of milk sugar, this coffee milk stout is a rich and roasty treat. Brewed in the style of a milk stout. Available in single 12 oz. bottles as part of the Beer Camp Across America 2014 Variety pack and on limited draft.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a Sierra Nevada tulip glass. Served above 62 degrees Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a soft foamy head of a mocha cream color over a near black body. Retention is very good and lacing is light and streaked. 4.25

(Smell) The roasted coffee bean aroma comes forward first, generating notes of earth and delicate fruit, with lesser characters of a malt body, light caramel, light roasted malt ,milk chocolate and dark sugars with a touch of lactose sweetness for some cream and sugar. Potency is modest. 3.75

(Taste) The roasted malt is more forward in the flavor, lightly toasted caramel bread, cocoa and soft lactose for a modest coffee base, finishing with a lingering earthy bitterness of coffee bean accented with subtle notes of fruit which accounts for significant enough balance to maintain interest. The depth of flavor may resemble more of a cup of black coffee over a brewed latte, but the balance comes forth better at warmer temperatures, cutting through some of the bitter edge. 4

(Mouthfeel) The texture is lightly chewy, silky, clean and mildly dry. Carbonation is mellow, generating a medium frothiness and a very soft crisp finish for a light creamy mouthfeel overall. The body is medium+ for the style, shy of heavy overall. Balance is nearly even earthy bitter to sweet, although bitterness wins out by a hair. Alcohol presence is mild and there are no notable off characters. 4.5

(Overall) My grand finale of the Beer Camp Across America 2014 Variety pack is a roundly satisfactory stout. A solid and clean-cut malt profile is compensated with a bitterness almost entirely sourced by the usage of coffee beans, generating more delicate flavor characteristics for a fuller coffee flavor. Stouts are becoming increasingly more difficult to distinguish as superior over other quality stouts, and only the truly unique seem to be recognized above the rest. I find it a bit more formulaic than other entries in the Beer Camp collection and have had many coffee stouts before, although I appreciate the balance and range of coffee flavor that Double Latte produces through the bean. Plays nicely for a middle gravity stout, but there is certainly great potential to amplify the malt body for a deserving imperial treatment. I would not be surprised if this beer is many people's choice winner of the entire pack, and it would be a highly popular choice to rebrew this for widespread distribution. 4

a: a rich deep dark black which lets no light through. large 2.5 finger tan head with some holes up top

s: mmmm. rich milk chocolate, roast malts, freshly ground espresso beans, sweet cream, dark chocolate covered berries, more coffee. man the coffee smell in here is real nice - something that reminds you of an FBS

t: its a rich mixture of freshly roasted coffee, espresso beans, roasted malts and dark chocolate. there is some sweetness from malts, and a nice helping of lactose which helps to cut some of the coffee bitterness and really round this beer out into something special

m: its a creamy, medium mouthfeel. not much carbonation

o: this is a treat to drink. its my last of the camp, and my favorite. the coffee is the superstar in here, and its balanced so well within the beer that each sip is a delight. not as good as an FBS, but still a really really nice beer to drink. if you don't like coffee beers, stay away. if you do, dive right in

Consumed 1/27/15

A: Nearly black at first glance, more of a deep, dark brown upon inspection, with some dark brown around the edges - pours with a small, light brown head, fades to a few wisps of a cap and leaves some spotty lacing

S: Dark chocolate and roasty coffee - nice range of chocolate, with some dark chocolate, semisweet chocolate, and brownies - nicely burnt, with some chocolate malts - really nice coffee aroma, very roasty - hints of the lactose underneath the bold chocolate and coffee aromas - lightly nutty with some caramel and caramelized malts

T: Chocolate, coffee, and some nice sweetness for balance - big chocolate flavors, with dark chocolate, semisweet chocolate, milk chocolate, and cocoa - nice dark roast coffee flavor, roasty and lightly burnt - moderate level of burnt overall, with just a hint of char - the milky, lactose sweetness cuts through the darker elements and works well - some caramel, molasses, and toffee sweetness as well

M: Medium body, maybe on the thin side, nicely carbonated, some residual stickiness from the lactose, would be better if it were slightly maltier

O: Like an iced mocha latte... except actually worth drinking

I saved this Beer Camp beer for last with hopes that it would be a proper goodbye to camp. I am happy to find that it is. I am a sucker for beers that manage to taste like dessert without tasting like they are going to cause some form of rapid-onset diabetes. Other than some issues with the mouthfeel, this is one of my favorites from the Beer Camp pack.
